Unlike traditional distributed machine learning, federated learning stores data locally for training and then aggregates the models on the server, which solves the data security problem that may arise in traditional distributed machine learning. However, during the training process, the transmission of model parameters can impose a significant load on the network bandwidth. It has been pointed out that the vast majority of model parameters are redundant during model parameter transmission. In this paper, we explore the data distribution law of selected partial model parameters on this basis, and propose a deep hierarchical quantization compression algorithm, which further compresses the model and reduces the network load brought by data transmission through the hierarchical quantization of model parameters. And we adopt a dynamic sampling strategy for the selection of clients to accelerate the convergence of the model. DC microgrids have been considered the need of modern times due to simple energy conversion and less losses. It is anticipated that the number of DC loads will outweigh the count of AC loads. Presently, power-sharing and voltage stability are significant challenges in DC microgrids. Sliding mode control (SMC) has been implemented in power electronic converters and has shown promising performance in several applications. This paper proposes integrating universal droop control (UDC) with SMC to interfacing the distributed energy resources and power sharing in DC MG. Compared to PI control, the proposed control provides a better dynamic response. The UDC is separately staged before the SMC and specifies the permissible change in voltage and maximum power drawn from the converters in DC MG. A dynamic model of the DC-DC converter is developed. To fulfil the primary goal of voltage regulation at the DC link, nonlinear control laws were presented for the DG-based DC-DC converters. The UDC ensures the voltage stability of the DC MG using the predetermined power limitations of DGs. UDC based SMC outweighs the proposed control in performance withstanding dynamic changes in load. A DC MG hardware prototype has been used to test the proposed controller's practical feasibility. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, the world is confronting various healthcare issues, and healthcare automation is more crucial than ever. The pandemic has revealed the limitations of existing digital healthcare systems to manage public health emergencies. There is no registered population for many healthcare institutions in Sri Lanka, as a result, there is a communication gap. Electronic Health Record systems (EHRs) are becoming popular to share patient details but accessing scattered data across several EHRs while safeguarding patient privacy remains a challenge. Most of these medical records are in printed format and manually entering those into EHR systems is time-consuming and error prone. Not only that pharmaceutical error is a critical healthcare problem, but it is even riskier to visit doctors for pharmaceutical diagnosis during a pandemic. This research introduces a Blockchain-based patient health record system, an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) based Medical Document Scanner, a Drug Identifier based on Image Processing and a Medical Chatbot powered by NLP as four novel approaches to address these issues. Altogether with the results, this research aims at introducing a solution for the limitations in healthcare while providing a distributed healthcare framework for the healthcare community worldwide.

Overview of Caching Mechanisms to Improve Hadoop Performance

In today’s distributed computing environments, large amounts of data are generated from different resources with a high velocity, rendering the data difficult to capture, manage, and process within existing relational databases. Hadoop is a tool to store and process large datasets in a parallel manner across a cluster of machines in a distributed environment. Hadoop brings many benefits like flexibility, scalability, and high fault tolerance;however, it faces some challenges in terms of data access time, I/O operation, and duplicate computations resulting in extra overhead, resource wastage, and poor performance. Many researchers have utilized caching mechanisms to tackle these challenges. For example, they have presented approaches to improve data access time, enhance data locality rate, remove repetitive calculations, reduce the number of I/O operations, decrease the job execution time, and increase resource efficiency. In the current study, we provide a comprehensive overview of caching strategies to improve Hadoop performance. Additionally, a novel classification is introduced based on cache utilization. Using this classification, we analyze the impact on Hadoop performance and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each group. Finally, a novel hybrid approach called Hybrid Intelligent Cache (HIC) that combines the benefits of two methods from different groups, H-SVM-LRU and CLQLMRS, is presented. Experimental results show that our hybrid method achieves an average improvement of 31.2% in job execution time. © 2023, CC BY.

Cooperative co-evolution (CC) is a promising direction in solving large-scale multiobjective optimization problems (LMOPs). However, most existing methods of grouping decision variables face some difficulties when searching in the huge search space. Specifically, the methods of grouping decision variables can be classified into two types, i.e., high-consumption grouping methods and non-consumption grouping methods. On the one hand, the former ones divide the decision variables into different groups based on the correlation analysis between variables, which consume much evaluation. This way may lead to premature convergence within limited computational resources. On the other hand, the later ones allocate the decision variables into sub-groups based on some metrics, e.g., order and size, which consume no evaluation while may cause the search fall into local optima. To alleviate the above issues, this paper proposes a CC-based algorithm with a variable-importance grouping (VIG) method, called VICCA. Firstly, the decision variables are classified into several subgroups according to their importance quantified by a meta-gene construction method. Secondly, a CC strategy is designed to simultaneously optimize all subgroups of decision variables formed by VIG using the differential evolution operator, which aims to accelerate the convergence speed. Thirdly, a global evolutionary strategy is proposed to optimize original decision variable space by the competitive swarm optimizer, aiming to maintain the diversity. Finally, the experiments demonstrate that our proposed VICCA has the significant advantage in solving LMOPs when compared with state-of-the-art evolutionary algorithms. © 2024 IEEE.

Analyzing and evaluating students' progress in any learning environment is stressful and time consuming if done using traditional analysis methods. This is further exasperated by the increasing number of students due to the shift of focus toward integrating the Internet technologies in education and the focus of academic institutions on moving toward e-Learning, blended, or online learning models. As a result, the topic of student performance prediction has become a vibrant research area in recent years. To address this, machine learning and data mining techniques have emerged as a viable solution. To that end, this work proposes the use of deep learning techniques (CNN and RNN-LSTM) to predict the students' performance at the midpoint stage of the online course delivery using three distinct datasets collected from three different regions of the world. Experimental results show that deep learning models have promising performance as they outperform other optimized traditional ML models in two of the three considered datasets while also having comparable performance for the third dataset. © 2023 IEEE.

The pleasure that often comes with eating can be further enhanced with intelligent technology, as the field of human-food interaction suggests. However, knowledge on how to design such pleasure-supporting eating systems is limited. To begin filling this knowledge gap, we designed "GustosonicSense", a novel gustosonic eating system that utilizes wireless earbuds for sensing different eating and drinking actions with a machine learning algorithm and trigger playful sounds as a way to facilitate pleasurable eating experiences. We present the findings from our design and a study that revealed how we can support the "stimulation", "hedonism", and "reflexivity" for playful human-food interactions. Generalizability of CNN Architectures for Face Morph Presentation Attack

Automatic border control systems are wide spread in modern airports worldwide. Morphing attacks on face biometrics is a serious threat that undermines the security and reliability of face recognition systems deployed in airports and border controls. Therefore, developing a robust Machine Learning (ML) system is necessary to prevent criminals crossing borders with fake identifications especially since it has been shown that security officers cannot detect morphs better than machines. In this study, we investigate the generalization power of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures against morphing attacks. The investigation utilizes 5 distinct CNNs namely ShuffleNet, DenseNet201, VGG16, EffecientNet-B0 and InceptionResNet-v2. Each CNN architecture represents a well-known family of CNN models in terms of number of parameters, architectural design and performance across various computer vision applications. To ensure robust evaluation, we employ 4 different datasets (Utrecht, London, Defacto and KurdFace) that contain a diverse range of digital face images which cover variations in ethnicity, gender, age, lighting condition and camera setting. One of the fundamental concepts of ML system design is the ability to generalize effectively to previously unseen data, hence not only we evaluate the performance of CNN models within individual datasets but also explore their performance across combined datasets and investigating each dataset in testing phase only too. Experimental results on more than 8 thousand images (genuine and morph) from the 4 datasets show that InceptionResNet-v2 generalizes better to unseen data and outperforms the other 4 CNN models. © 2023, CC BY.

Cloud Platforms are heterogeneous, and users may face interoperability issues migrating applications or exchanging data among distinct clouds due, for instance, to the lack of standards solutions. Several solutions have been proposed to overcome lock-in situations, and middleware platforms are one of them. A semantic interoperability solution named middleware for Data as a Service (DaaS)/Database as a Service (DBaaS) and software as a Service (SaaS)—MIDAS has been developed to overcome this lock-in issue. It is an intermediate communication layer to retrieve data from DaaS or DBaaS through a Structured Query Language (SQL) or a Not Only SQL (NoSQL) created at the SaaS level. MIDAS is a platform for software execution, but software development needs support for its entire life cycle. Therefore, we propose the Model drIven Approach for MIDAS (MIAMI), which enables the specification of platform-independent middleware models and their use to generate code on different cloud platforms. MIAMI comprises a Domain-Specific Modeling Language (DSML) that enables middleware models and a transformation specification, which defines how these models can be converted to code. MIAMI offers a strategy for MIDAS specification and code generation phases to help middleware developers’ activities. MIAMI was applied to code generation specifications in Cloud Foundry, Amazon Web Services, OpenShift, and Heroku providers to evaluate our approach. This specification shows MIAMI’s feasibility and points out that MDD is a promising approach to improving cloud interoperability solutions. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
