An approach is proposed to determine the principle of optimality in decision-making under incomplete information. It concludes in the introduction of efficiency and risk estimations, followed by their convolution or another selection procedure in the two-criteria problem. Sr2IrO4 has often been described via a simple, one-band pseudospin-12 model subject to electron-electron interactions on a square lattice, fostering analogies with cuprate superconductors believed to be well described by a similar model. In this work we argue—based on a detailed study of the low-energy electronic structure by circularly polarized spin and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with dynamical mean-field theory calculations—that a pseudospin-12 model fails to capture the full complexity of the system. We show instead that a realistic multiband Hubbard Hamiltonian, accounting for the full correlated t2g manifold, provides a detailed description of the interplay between spin-orbital entanglement and electron-electron interactions and yields quantitative agreement with experiments. Our analysis establishes that the j3/2 states make up a substantial percentage of the low-energy spectral weight, i.e., approximately 74% as determined from the integration of the j-resolved spectral function in the 0 to −1.64eV energy range. The results in our work are of relevance not only to Ir-based materials but also more generally to multiorbital materials with closely spaced energy scales.

We develop an agent based model to characterize the wellbeing of newcomers (i.e. asylum seeking refugees) in the context of asylum logistics using Schwartz's theory of values. The model produces recommendations for decision-makers with respect to avoiding catastrophic outcomes and maximizing best case outcomes. We conduct analysis to show that while a relatively simple set of conditions is necessary to avoid catastrophic outcomes, these conditions are insufficient to maximize the best case outcomes. Furthermore, the conditions that maximize one best case outcome do so at the expense of another. The result is a platform for decision-makers to understand tradeoffs in policies for government and non-government organizations.

The modeling and simulation community in aviation is in search of standardization in simulation scenario definition. While the System Entity Structure (SES) ontology promises an effective formal means of domain modeling, computational representation is still a key challenge to tackle for fostering wide-acceptance and standardization. This paper presents an eXtended Markup Language (XML) based approach. It first gives the relational specification and the schema definition of the SES ontology. Following a layered modeling workflow, it then presents a schema definition for the simulation scenario definition language and exemplifies its utilization. © 2018, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. Generalized superradiant assembly for nanophotonic thermal emitters

Superradiance explains the collective enhancement of emission, observed when nanophotonic emitters are arranged within subwavelength proximity and perfect symmetry. Thermal superradiant emitter assemblies with variable photon far-field coupling rates are known to be capable of outperforming their conventional, nonsuperradiant counterparts. However, due to the inability to account for assemblies comprising emitters with various materials and dimensional configurations, existing thermal superradiant models are inadequate and incongruent. In this paper, a generalized thermal superradiant assembly for nanophotonic emitters is developed from first principles. Spectral analysis shows that not only does the proposed model outperform existing models in power delivery, but also portrays unforeseen and startling characteristics during emission. These electromagnetically induced transparency like (EIT-like) and superscattering-like characteristics are reported here for a superradiant assembly, and the effects escalate as the emitters become increasingly disparate. The fact that the EIT-like characteristics are in close agreement with a recent experimental observation involving the superradiant decay of qubits strongly bolsters the validity of the proposed model.

We report a method to tune the second harmonic generation(SHG) frequency of a metallic octamer by employing cylindrical vector beams as the excitation. Our method exploits the ability to spatially match the polarization state of excitations with the fundamental target plasmonic modes, enabling flexible control of the SHG resonant *** is found that SHG of the octamer is enhanced over a broad band(400 nm) by changing the excitation from the linearly polarized Gaussian beam to radially and azimuthally polarized beams. More strikingly, when subjected to an azimuthally polarized beam, the SHG intensity of the octamer becomes 30 times stronger than that for the linearly polarized beam even in the presence of Fano resonance.

Exciton behavior under the influence of metal nanoparticle near fields: Significance of nonlocal effects

We analytically characterize the influence of a neighboring metal nanoparticle (MNP) on the behavioral trends of a quantum dot (QD) using a generalized nonlocal optical response (GNOR) method based approach, taking the MNP distance dependent modifications to the QD population relaxation and dephasing rates into account. The GNOR model is a recent generalization and an extension of the hydrodynamic Drude model (HDM), which goes beyond HDM by taking into account both the convection current and electron diffusion in the MNPs. It allows unified theoretical explanation of some experimentally observed plasmonic phenomena which otherwise would require ab initio analysis as the conventional local response approximation (LRA) fails to account for them. For example, it has been demonstrated in literature that the GNOR model captures size dependent resonance shifts of small MNPs which are unrevealed by the conventional LRA based methods, and it has proven to yield results displaying better agreement with the experimental observations for plasmonic experiments. Attempts to incorporate MNP nonlocal effects in the analytical characterization of vicinal excitons found in literature utilize the phenomenological hydrodynamic model and assume the absence of MNP interband effects. Moreover, they are only applicable to narrow parameter regions. In this paper we present a complete analytical characterization which overcomes these drawbacks and lends to the perusal of the system over wide continua of various parameters, enabling us to get an elevated view at a much lesser level of complexity compared to the conventional LRA based numerical methods or the conventional ab initio methods of accounting for the nonlocal effects. Recently, many convolutional neural network (CNN) methods have been designed for hyperspectral image (HSI) classification since CNNs are able to produce good representations of data, which greatly benefits from a huge number of parameters. However, solving such a high-dimensional optimization problem often requires a large amount of training samples in order to avoid overfitting. Additionally, it is a typical non-convex problem affected by many local minima and flat regions. To address these problems, in this paper, we introduce naive Gabor Networks or Gabor-Nets which, for the first time in the literature, design and learn CNN kernels strictly in the form of Gabor filters, aiming to reduce the number of involved parameters and constrain the solution space, and hence improve the performances of CNNs. Specifically, we develop an innovative phase-induced Gabor kernel, which is trickily designed to perform the Gabor feature learning via a linear combination of local low-frequency and high-frequency components of data controlled by the kernel phase. With the phase-induced Gabor kernel, the proposed Gabor-Nets gains the ability to automatically adapt to the local harmonic characteristics of the HSI data and thus yields more representative harmonic features. Also, this kernel can fulfill the traditional complex-valued Gabor filtering in a real-valued manner, hence making Gabor-Nets easily perform in a usual CNN thread. We evaluated our newly developed Gabor-Nets on three well-known HSIs, suggesting that our proposed Gabor-Nets can significantly improve the performance of CNNs, particularly with a small training set. Research software has become a central asset in academic research. It optimizes existing and enables new research methods, implements and embeds research knowledge, and constitutes an essential research product in itself. Research software must be sustainable in order to understand, replicate, reproduce, and build upon existing research or conduct new research effectively. In other words, software must be available, discoverable, usable, and adaptable to new needs, both now and in the future. Research software therefore requires an environment that supports sustainability. Hence, a change is needed in the way research software development and maintenance are currently motivated, incentivized, funded, structurally and infrastructurally supported, and legally treated. Failing to do so will threaten the quality and validity of research. In this paper, we identify challenges for research software sustainability in Germany and beyond, in terms of motivation, selection, research software engineering personnel, funding, infrastructure, and legal aspects. Besides researchers, we specifically address political and academic decision-makers to increase awareness of the importance and needs of sustainable research software practices. In particular, we recommend strategies and measures to create an environment for sustainable research software, with the ultimate goal to ensure that software-driven research is valid, reproducible and sustainable, and that software is recognized as a first class citizen in research. This paper is the outcome of two workshops run in Germany in 2019, at deRSE19 - the first International Conference of Research Software Engineers in Germany - and a dedicated DFG-supported follow-up workshop in Berlin.
