Phasor based Wide Area Monitoring and control Systems (WAMC) promise to offer more accurate and timely data on the state of the power system, thus, increasing the possibilities to manage the system at a more efficient and responsive level and apply wide area control and protection schemes. This paper presents results of a survey on communications and technical requirements for applications based on Phasor Measurement Units (PMU). The survey was carried out in the Nordic Region with participants from Transmission System Operators (TSOs) and researchers. The survey focused on documenting the stage of research and development among TSOs and researchers in the Nordic Region, as well as, their plans and visions for the future. This includes planned PMU deployments and prioritization of PMU based applications. Furthermore, a significant part of the survey was an elicitation of communication requirements for applications based on PMU data. In the paper, an examination of the time requirements for these applications in terms of delays and samples per second and comparison similar published specifications is provided.

In this paper, there is a need for a temporal analysis to evaluate and optimize a design with respect to the deadlines. The authors put forward some performance parameters of CAN bus and attempt to find better ways to simulate and evaluate its performance. The paper compares and analyzes the characteristics of CAN scheduling and that of RM. Finally, we present a Petri Net model with extended PNK2e amending classic RM algorithm. Results with evaluations proved that the model could analyze, evaluate and optimize the real-time performance of CAN in applications.

Content-based image retrieval represents images as N-dimensional feature vectors. Similar image retrieval is computed over these high dimensional feature vectors. A sequential scan of the feature vectors for a query method is costly for a large number of images when N is high. The search time and search space can be reduced through indexing the data. In this paper we proposed a hierarchical clustering tree for building indices of the image database. Experiment shows that the hierarchical tree has the attribute of quick response time when retrieve image based on the query and also provide a convenient structure for users to browse the database.

Based on analyzing the structure characteristics of a multivariable grey model, a novel design method of grey prediction PID control is proposed according to the control requirements of a discrete system. Combining the grey system theory with digital PID control, a grey model GM (0, N) of the discrete system is constructed and in the initial stage the control effect is directly determined by a digital PID controller. Meanwhile, the parameters of the GM (0, N) model are estimated via generating operation. Then the compensation controller is employed to eliminate the influence of uncertain parts on system performance by utilizing the prediction control variable due to parameter estimation. Finally, a simulation experiment for the control system is taken on Matlab. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and the practicability of this control method for a discrete system.

Robots have been introduced to the operating room primarily to provide higher accuracy and dexterity. Mechatronic devices can support surgeons with advanced targeting, visualization and task execution with a precision beyond the human skills. To evaluate a system, accuracy tests are required, and proper methodology should be applied to describe its properties. It is crucial in interventional medicine to test the application accuracy of a system, showing the overall task execution error. This may be a non-linear function of the intrinsic- and registration accuracies, as described in the paper. Different methods are presented to provide system characteristics. Also, the most important surgical robot systems are introduced in details along with their published accuracy measures. Despite the fact that the added value of a surgical robot is usually consistent with the precision it can achieve, the importance of overall safety, predictability and transparency many times overcomes the need for spatial precision.

In this paper, the topic of robust stabilization of a centrifugal compressor with spool dynamics is studied and presented. Sliding mode controls for systems with matching-type and mismatching-type uncertainties are separately designed and verified. The sliding mode design is chosen to achieve the stability of the working equilibrium for systems without uncertainties. However, it is known that uncertainties in the spool dynamics and the compressor characteristic are most likely to happen in the real applications. By actuating only the throttle as the single control input, the robust stabilization of the working equilibrium is proposed by using a sliding mode control. Numerical simulations are given to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed and derived approaches.

The video applications have their own characteristics, and some real time applications need high QoS. But the Internet is very complex and sometime the supplies can not be provided. Recently, many researches have been found that much traffic is self-similar over several time scales. The bandwidth of network is tempi present. We use Kalman filter to filter the sending rate and to predict the rate while the ack-packets lost. In this paper, we propose a novel video transmission control algorithm, AFEC-Advanced FEC, which is integrated with FEC coding technology and Kalman filter theory. The algorithm modifies the rate with the adapted Kalman filter and the number of sending FEC packets is adapted by another mechanism. This algorithm can solve the collapse caused by the mass ACK packets and the rate fluctuation caused by the loss of the ACK packets. This algorithm also solves the problem of the elementary-layer-loss in transmission and keeps the continuity of the video transmission through the Internet. At last, we give the simulation results, which indicate the algorithm can provide good video services in loss-ratio-high channel.

Spam mails are extremely inconvenient, annoying and wasteful to most users since they waste time and bandwidth. To efficiently resolve this problem, a new spam mail filtering algorithm is proposed by using linear discriminant analysis(LDA) and ant colony optimization(ACO) algorithm. The experimental results show that this algorithm is feasible and performs much better than other typical spam filtering algorithms.
