We present a method for optimal phase control of limit-cycle oscillators using strong inputs. Based on the phase-amplitude reduction, which provides a concise representation of the oscillator dynamics, we design an optimal control input that quickly realizes the target phase while keeping the oscillator state close to the original limit cycle by penalizing the amplitude deviations. The derived scheme requires only a single one-dimensional phase equation even for the control of high-dimensional oscillators. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method by comparing the control performance with other methods, using the van der Pol oscillator and Willamowski-Rössler oscillator as examples.

This paper outlines the design of a fractional-order proportional–integral–derivative controller for regulating the induction phase of Propofol infusion in lean and obese patients. The obtained controller is implemented within the pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic model and the nonlinear Hill function to conduct closed-loop simulations. The latter are employed using a dataset comprising 24 patients to obtain clinical evaluation results. The design of the controller relies on a generic second-order plus dead time approximation model, which characterizes interpatient variability in response to Propofol infusion within the studied population. The fractional-order proportional–integral–derivative is tuned to achieve sufficient robustness margins ie phase margin, cutoff frequency, and the consideration of the iso-damping properties. The results show no undershoot and a smooth convergence to the desired value of the bispectral index, which indicates the depth of hypnosis.

This paper presents a novel controller design based on strick-feedback system to solve the trajectory-tracking control problem of flexible joint manipulators. First, a mathematical model of the manipulator without the use of an exact control input model is derived. Then, a control law is designed by using a virtual control system in strick-feedback form that has properties of finite-time stability. To this purpose, a diffeomorphism for mapping between the virtual system and the flexible joint manipulator model is introduced. Since the virtual control system has the properties of finite-time, the proposed control law for the manipulator also inherits these characteristics. The proposed method is proven based on the Liapunov stability theory that the tracking error of the system can be stabilized within a finite time. To validate the effect of the method, both simulation and experiments are carried out; and the obtained results demonstrate the performance of the proposed control law.
