With the rise in frequency of catastrophic events, enviromental protection and risk management have become critical challenges for assuring both the safety of human pop-ulations and the sustainability of ecosystems. In this direction, the ARIES project has deveoped a suite of functionalities and software solution to support emergency operators in all phases of emergency management, from risk estimation to enviromental monitoring, early detection and response. The present paper provides an overview of the main functionalities that consistute the buidling blocks of the enviromental monitoring system developed by the project through a combination of dynamical systems, digital twins and convolutional neural networks, also reporting on its early validation activities. © 2024 IEEE.

A Novel Sleep Modulation and Quality Classification Strategy Based EEG Signals and Multi-Scale Attention Deep Learning

Sleep disorders have become the second most prevalent mental health condition globally, posing a significant challenge to public health. Consequently, there is an imperative need for the development of effective, non-pharmacological interventions to enhance sleep quality. In this study, a novel sleep modulation technique utilizing transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is introduced. A specialized stimulation mode is designed by integrating sine waves of varying frequencies, including spindle waveform components. Additionally, to facilitate an accurate evaluation of sleep quality and enable individualized interventions, a multi-scale attention-based deep learning model (MSA-Net) is proposed for sleep quality classification. It consists of a two-branch convolution block (TBC-block), an adaptive feature recalibration (AFR) module, three dense blocks, three attention transition blocks. By extracting the deep features of the electroencephalography (EEG) raw data, the sleep quality classification is realized. Experimental results indicate that the proposed stimulation effectively enhances and stabilizes slow-wave activity, significantly extending the duration of deep sleep and enhancing overall sleep stability. In addition, the MSA-Net demonstrates robust performance, achieving exceptional performance with an overall accuracy of 0.881, F1 score of 0.903, and Kappa score of 0.845, outperforming baseline models across all evaluation metrics. These results demonstrate the potential of combining TENS-based sleep modulation with deep learning techniques, offering an effective framework for enhancing sleep quality and advancing personalized sleep modulation strategies. © 2025 IEEE.

In order to effectively utilize the dielectric response characteristics of transformers to diagnose the insulation state,this paper proposes a two-level hybrid optimization method for analyzing time-domain dielectric response *** optimization algorithm is based on the combined statistical indicators(CSI)and random forest(RF)*** initial feature space set is formed with 23 time-domain *** the first-level stage,statistical indices correlation,distance,and information indicators are integrated to assess the synthesis score of the characteristics,while highly redundant and lowclass discrimination characteristics are eliminated from the initial space *** the second-level stage,the Random Forest based outside bagging data theory is introduced to evaluate the least important characteristics,and the characteristics with low importance indices are excluded to obtain the final optimal feature space *** proposed method is carried out on 82 sets of data from actual dielectric response tests on oil-paper insulation ***,the final optimal feature space set,along with several other data sets,is tested via different diagnosis *** results show that the optimal feature space set obtained via the proposed method outperforms other feature space sets in terms of better adaptability and diagnosis accuracy.

Health is one of the most precious aspects of every person's life. Whether we're talking about a well-functioning heart, nervous system, respiratory system, or simply body weight, each of these branches contributes to a person's overall health. It is important to monitor certain body functions and characteristics as often as possible so that we can prevent or, in unfortunate situations, treat health problems early. The developed mobile application facilitates the monitoring of heart rate, ideal weight, basal metabolic rate, and body mass index. The data used by the mobile app is collected by the FITBIT smartwatch. Higher-order properties and extensions for indirect MRAC and APPC of linear systems

Recently, a reference derived some new higher-order output tracking properties for direct model reference adaptive control（MRAC） of linear time-invariant（LTI） systems: limt→∞ e（i）（t） = 0, i = 1,..., n*-1, where n*and e（i）（t） denote the relative degree of the system and the i-th derivative of the output tracking error, respectively. However, a naturally arising question involves whether indirect adaptive control（including indirect MRAC and indirect adaptive pole placement control） of LTI systems still has higher-order tracking properties. Such properties have not been reported in the literature. Therefore, this paper provides an affirmative answer to this question. Such higher-order tracking properties are new discoveries since they hold without any additional design conditions and, in particular, without the persistent excitation condition. Given the higher-order properties, a new adaptive control system is developed with stronger tracking features.（1） It can track a reference signal with any order derivatives being unknown.（2） It has higher-order exponential or practical output tracking properties.（3） Finally, it is different from the usual MRAC system, whose reference signal's derivatives up to the n*order are assumed to be known. Finally, two simulation examples are provided to verify the theoretical results obtained in this paper.

Monitoring sugar concentration during fermentation is crucial for producing high-quality alcoholic beverages. Traditional methods for measuring sugar concentration can be costly and time-consuming, especially for small-scale producers. In this study, we developed a low-cost buoyant force measurement device for monitoring sugar concentration in water solutions. The device consists of a buoyant object fully submerged in the solution and connected to a load-cell sensor. As the sugar concentration in the liquid increases, the buoyant force on the object increases, and the load-cell measures this force. Proposed device is calibrated using solutions of known sugar concentrations and its high accuracy and precision is presented. The device is tested in controlled environment to ensure accurate tracking changes in sugar concentration over time. Proposed device can be a valuable tool for small-scale producers looking to optimize their fermentation processes while minimizing costs. © 2023 IEEE.

In recent years, Digital Twin (DT) has gained significant interestfrom academia and industry due to the advanced in information technology,communication systems, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cloud Computing (CC),and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). The main concept of the DT isto provide a comprehensive tangible, and operational explanation of anyelement, asset, or system. However, it is an extremely dynamic taxonomydeveloping in complexity during the life cycle that produces a massive amountof engendered data and information. Likewise, with the development of AI,digital twins can be redefined and could be a crucial approach to aid theInternet of Things (IoT)-based DT applications for transferring the data andvalue onto the Internet with better decision-making. Therefore, this paperintroduces an efficient DT-based fault diagnosis model based on machinelearning (ML) tools. In this framework, the DT model of the machine isconstructed by creating the simulation model. In the proposed framework,the Genetic algorithm (GA) is used for the optimization task to improvethe classification accuracy. Furthermore, we evaluate the proposed faultdiagnosis framework using performance metrics such as precision, accuracy,F-measure, and recall. The proposed framework is comprehensively examinedusing the triplex pump fault diagnosis. The experimental results demonstratedthat the hybrid GA-ML method gives outstanding results compared to MLmethods like LogisticRegression (LR), Na飗e Bayes (NB), and SupportVectorMachine (SVM). The suggested framework achieves the highest accuracyof 95% for the employed hybrid GA-SVM. The proposed framework willeffectively help industrial operators make an appropriate decision concerningthe fault analysis for IIoT applications in the context of Industry 4.0.

The fast growth of digital communication via smartphones and social media has made textual data as one of the most essential forms of people's expressions. Accurate emotion discovery from text is thus important for applications in customer sentiment analysis and interactive technologies, be it a web, desktop, or mobile application, an intelligent robot, or minor connected devices. This paper is intended to evaluate the performance of five state-of-the-art transformer models, including BERT, ALBERT, DistilBERT, Transformer XL, and RoBERTa, for multiclass emotion detection using the IEMOCAP dataset. From the results, it is observed that DistilBERT has the highest accuracy of 79.2%, implying an effective approach in balancing model size and performance. These research show that smaller models like DistilBERT often outperform larger models by reducing their overfitting and computational demands. The findings also highlights the need for task-specific fine-tuning and optimization in emotion detection. © 2024 IEEE.

Intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) is a commonly used activation method in clinical applications, e.g. epilepsy, but also used in research for investigating excitability states in the brain. Effects in the brain followed by IPS are also known as photic driving response. These effects are usually characterized using averaged data. Here, we used single-trial analysis to determine photic driving effects at the second harmonics of the stimulation *** rest and auditory-visual stimulation, 64-channel EEG data were recorded with eyes closed. The visual stimulation included eight stimulation frequencies within the alpha and beta bands. A complex Morlet wavelet was used for time-frequency (TF) analysis. Bursts within the TF representations were then detected and characterized by number, frequency, and power near the second *** observed bursts close to the second harmonic of each stimulation frequency. The number of these events increased during stimulation and the main frequencies were shifted towards the second harmonics. Similarly, the power increased at all but one *** new single-trial analysis during IPS could lead to a better understanding of the photic driving effects in the brain and, in particular, the generation mechanisms with regard to the occurrence of effects in the harmonics and sub-harmonics. © 2024 IEEE.
