Domain adaptive FL for edge-enabled privacy-preserving MRI analysis

Data heterogeneity, privacy leakage challenges, the ineffectiveness of conventional collaborative learning techniques, and unresolved managing non-IID data distributions are some of the major obstacles to implementing artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. Federated learning (FL) frameworks frequently have trouble distinguishing between privacy protection and model accuracy, especially when used for delicate medical imaging applications. This study presents a novel framework that synergizes federated learning (FL) with edge computing to address these issues while safeguarding patient privacy. Our proposed Domain Adaptive Federated (DAD) learning approach effectively mitigates both inter-client and intra-client data heterogeneity, enabling collaborative model training across diverse medical imaging modalities (MRI, CT, PET) through cross-domain adaptation. Experimental evaluations on MRI brain segmentation datasets demonstrate the superior performance of DAD compared to traditional FL methods, as evidenced by significant improvements in F1-score (96.3), sensitivity (96.0), specificity (97.1), and AUC (96.7). This enhanced accuracy and robustness in handling heterogeneous and privacy-sensitive data render DAD an ideal candidate for privacy-preserving AI in consumer healthcare. By pioneering innovative strategies for collaborative model training and data privacy, this research contributes to the emerging field of edge intelligence, paving the way for improved patient outcomes while adhering to stringent confidentiality and ethical mandates.

Geometric Reachability for Attitude control Systems via Contraction Theory

In this paper, we present a geometric framework for the reachability analysis of attitude control systems. We model the attitude dynamics on the product manifold SO(3) × 3 and introduce a novel parametrized family of Riemannian metrics on this space. Using contraction theory on manifolds, we establish reliable upper bounds on the Riemannian distance between nearby trajectories of the attitude control systems. By combining these trajectory bounds with numerical simulations, we provide a simulation-based algorithm to over-approximate the reachable sets of attitude systems. We show that the search for optimal metrics for distance bounds can be efficiently performed using semidefinite programming. Additionally, we introduce a practical and effective representation of these over-approximations on manifolds, enabling their integration with existing Euclidean tools and software. Modern societies increasingly rely on automatic control systems. These systems are hardly pure technical systems; instead they are complex socio-technical systems, which consist of technical elements and social components. It is necessary to have a systematic approach to analyze these systems because it is growing evidence that accidents from these systems usually have complex causal factors which form an interconnected network of events, rather than a simple cause-effect chain. We take railway Train control systems (TCS) as an example to demonstrate the importance of the socio-technical approach to analyze the system. The paper presents an investigation of recent high-speed railway accident by applying STAMP - one of the most notable socio-technical system analysis techniques, outlines improvements to the system which could avoid similar accidents in the future. We also provide our valuable feedback for the use of STAMP.

The research presents a new efficient machine learning method to classify brain tumors because this task remains vital in fighting the high incidence of brain cancers. The proposed approach unites all its operations including image segmentation with feature extraction and classification into a single processing system. This study uses Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Adaptive PSO (APSO) methodologies to optimize Locally Linear Radial Basis Function Neural Network (LLRBFNN) resulting in PSO-LLRBFNN and APSO-LLRBFNN model implementations. The research examined the optimized APSO-LLRBFNN models against Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Least Mean Squares (LMS) based LLRBFNN classifier methods. Results from experiments show that APSO-LLRBFNN gives superior outcomes with 98.93% accuracy and takes 12.23 seconds for execution, which surpasses currently available methods.

Average Communication Rate for Networked Event-Triggered Stochastic control Systems

Quantifying the average communication rate (ACR) of a networked event-triggered stochastic control system (NET-SCS) with deterministic thresholds is challenging due to the non-stationary nature of the system's stochastic processes. For a NET-SCS, the propagation of nonlinear statistics of the network communication status brought up by deterministic thresholds makes the precise computation of ACR difficult. Previous work used to over-simplify the computation using a Gaussian distribution without incorporating this nonlinearity, leading to sacrificed precision. This paper proposes a novel approach to calculate the exact ACR for a NET-SCS using a recursive model. We use theoretical analysis and a numerical study to qualitatively evaluate the deviation gap of the conventional approach that ignores the side information. The accuracy of our proposed method, alongside its comparison with the simplified results of the conventional approach, is validated by experimental studies. Our work is promising to benefit the efficient resource planning of networked control systems with limited communication resources by providing accurate ACR computation. © 2025 IEEE.

The surge in smart device usage and the demand for high-throughput, low-latency mobile networks have accelerated the adoption of distributed smart applications and Collaborative Resource Management (CRM) techniques such as Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC). With its ability to handle large data volumes, computational demands, scalability, and high energy consumption, MEC represents the next generation of Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC), addressing key challenges in emerging smart applications. MEC supports real-time, high-throughput, and energy-efficient techniques like task offloading and ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC). However, as these techniques become more widespread, their diversity increases, leading to complexities that make them harder to understand and validate in different applications. This includes their use in areas like assistance for unmanned vehicles (UVs), autonomous driving, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), high altitude platforms (HAPs), underwater unmanned vehicles (UUVs), satellite air-ground communication (SAGC), and other emerging systems that rely on Collaborative Resource Management (CRM). Although a number of review articles pertaining to MEC systems exist, we analyzed techniques beyond task offloading that explore MEC system applicability in diverse domains, including UUVs, vehicular edge computing, Re-configurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS), Massive MIMO, autonomous driving, HAPs, and SAGC. From the perspective of these optimization techniques, this article highlights their role in shaping MEC’s evolution, focusing on parameters such as real-time response, energy efficiency, and other critical factors in task offloading processes. We also explored the role of Standard Development Organizations (SDOs), such as ETSI and IEEE, in advancing MEC systems. Decoding AI Judgment: How LLMs Assess News Credibility and Bias

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly used to assess news credibility, yet little is known about how they make these judgments. While prior research has examined political bias in LLM outputs or their potential for automated fact-checking, their internal evaluation processes remain largely unexamined. Understanding how LLMs assess credibility provides insights into AI behavior and how credibility is structured and applied in large-scale language models. This study benchmarks the reliability and political classifications of state-of-the-art LLMs—Gemini 1.5 Flash (Google), GPT-4o mini (OpenAI), and LLaMA 3.1 (Meta)—against structured, expert-driven rating systems such as NewsGuard and Media Bias Fact Check. Beyond assessing classification performance, we analyze the linguistic markers that shape LLM decisions, identifying which words and concepts drive their evaluations. We uncover patterns in how LLMs associate credibility with specific linguistic features by examining keyword frequency, contextual determinants, and rank distributions. Beyond static classification, we introduce a framework in which LLMs refine their credibility assessments by retrieving external information, querying other models, and adapting their responses. This allows us to investigate whether their assessments reflect structured reasoning or rely primarily on prior learned associations. © 2025, CC BY.

Mixed-Integer Optimal control With Disjunctive Characteristic Time Constraints for Energy-Optimal Speed Planning

This paper considers the energy optimization problem with multiple time window constraints, which is motivated by the eco-driving of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) in urban traffic. Timely crossing of signalized intersections defines complex spatio-temporal constraints, and multiple available open time windows introduce the discontinuous feasible domains of crossing times. The CAVs should select an open time-window for each intersection, determine the crossing times, and optimize the speed profiles accordingly, which turns out to be a hard-to-solve optimization problem. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a unifying approach that transforms the energy optimization problem into a novel mixed-integer optimal control problem with characteristic time constraints (MIOCP-CT). This approach facilitates the simultaneous optimization of open time windows, crossing times, and speed profiles within a single optimization problem, which can be solved by our proposed novel numerical solution procedure. The application of the proposed method in the eco-driving of CAVs approaching multiple signalized intersections demonstrates its performance within real-world urban driving cycles. The experimental results of the hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) demonstrate a superior energy-saving performance of 5.83% compared to existing methods, while also achieving real-time feasibility within 100 milliseconds. © 2015 IEEE.

Due to their highly flexible deployment and agility features, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) serving as aerial base stations are increasingly being used in challenging environments, including emergency communication, traffic offloading, and failures of existing communications infrastructure. A reliable and effective communication service requires 3D deployment and autonomous UAV trajectory optimization in each time slot. While most prior approaches focus on trajectory design that maximizes communication coverage or network throughput without considering fairness as well as computation time. This paper presents a multi-UAV trajectory control and fair communication (TCFC) scheme that maximizes ground user data rate and communication coverage while ensuring service fairness in a UAV-aided wireless communications system. The proposed TCFC scheme employs a two-stage learning approach. Firstly, it develops a gated recurrent unit-based link quality estimation model to assess each user's link quality over time. Then, a federated multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (FedMADRL) algorithm is utilized to continuously adjust the trajectory of the UAVs, optimizing communication performance. We evaluated our proposed system using real channel measurement data, i.e., amplitude and phase signal information. The results show that the proposed TCFC scheme reduces computation time by 26.91% and provides comparable network performance with the baseline methods while improving DRL agents' privacy. © 2025 IEEE.

This paper models a platooning system consisting of trucks and a third-party service provider (TPSP), which performs platoon coordination, distributes the platooning profit in platoons, and charges trucks in exchange for the services. Government subsidies used to incentivize platooning are also considered. We propose a pricing rule for the TPSP, which keeps part of the platooning profit including the subsidy each time a platoon is formed. In addition, a platoon coordination solution based on the distributed model predictive control (MPC) is proposed, in which the pricing rule under government subsidies is integrated. We perform a realistic simulation over the Swedish road network to evaluate the impact of the pricing rule and subsidies on the achieved profits and fuel savings. Our results show that subsidies are an effective mean to boost fuel savings from platooning. Moreover, the simulation study indicates that high pricing corresponds to a low platooning rate of the system, as trucks' incentives for platooning decrease. © 2023 The Authors.
