In this paper, we propose a new image representation called Local Zernike Moments (LZM) for face recognition. In recent years, local image representations such as Gabor and Local Binary Patterns (LBP) have attracted great interest due to their success in handling difficulties of face recognition. In this study, we aim to develop an alternative representation to further improve the face recognition performance. We achieve this by utilizing Zernike Moments which have been successfully used as shape descriptors for character recognition. We modify global Zernike moments to obtain a local representation by computing the moments at every pixel of a face image by considering its local neighborhood, thus decomposing the image into a set of images, moment components, to capture the micro structure around each pixel. Our experiments on FERET face database reveal the superior performance of LZM over Gabor and LBP representations.

To begin with, two advanced nonlinear model-based control design methods are compared in view of industrial applications. The nonlinear repetitive control model and gain-scheduling control approach are actually based on the polynomial feedback linearization formalism and on a non-Lyapunov method for the estimation of the attraction domains. Again, an input control which guarantees closeness and swiftness along a desired trajectory is consequently constructed. Accordingly, the comparative evaluation is carried out on a CSTR reactor model. Based on an analysis of simulation scenarios, the synthesized controller is validated with respect to trajectory tracking performance and implementation issues. Last of all, our results are illustrated via a numerical simulation.

This paper presents a methodology for avoiding joint limits of robot manipulators in the solution of the differential inverse kinematics problem. A nonlinear transformation is applied to the joint limits, leading to a new kinematics formulation defined in the space of the transformed variables. The introduced transformation ensures that the joint variables stay between joint limits. Optimality conditions are converted into the transformed joint space, and closed-loop differential inverse kinematics is applied. The effectiveness of the introduced method is demonstrated on a simulational example.

This short paper presents a preliminary analysis of the impact of model parameter uncertainty on the accuracy of solution algorithms for the scheduling problems with the learning effect. We consider the maximum completion time minimization flowshop problem with job processing times described by the power functions dependent on the number of processed jobs. To solve the considered scheduling problem we propose heuristic (NEH based) and metaheuristic (simulated annealing) algorithms. The numerical experiments show that NEH and simulated annealing are robust for this problem with respect to model parameter uncertainty.

The quick development of biomass fired boilers increased the attention being paid to the ecological and economical aspects of their operation. A very important role in the process of adapting to harder regulations has been the control technology replacing older simple solutions. Lately, we have been offered a very interesting opportunity to make use of our experience with small-scale boiler control which has been gradually equipped with instruments for more sophisticated experiments and to transfer verified control algorithms to a district heating boiler of medium-scale size. The following text describes what has been achieved in experiments with the small-scale boiler and how this can be transferred to bigger scale one. An algorithm to optimize the combustion process from the efficiency point of view, as well as harmful emission reduction is described in detail.
