This paper presents a software tool, entitled ODQLab, to design dynamic quantizers for discrete-valued input control. ODQLab is a Matlab-based graphical tool, which enables us to obtain and verify dynamic quantizers without the knowledge of any sophisticated design theory. In this paper, we introduce the software tool with the underlying theory. Its effectiveness is demonstrated by design examples and experimental evaluations.

Abstract A dual variational Bayes filter for states and parameter estimation in IDE based spatiotemporal dynamic systems is developed. Recursive updates are obtained from a restricted variational Bayesian perspective, using a dual filtering formulation where parameters are allowed to evolve in time. The added benefit over conventional point estimate filters is that parameter distributions are readily available for one to take advantage of in the design of complex experiments or in adaptive control scenarios. The dual filter is evaluated in a simulation study and seen to perform favorably when compared to a standard SMC approach.

In proteomics 2-dimensional SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) is the most widely used method for analyzing protein mixtures qualitatively. There are, however, a lot of noise and measurement biases which needs to be accounted for both in the localization of spots as well as in the quantitative measurement of protein expression. Previous techniques for denoising 2D gels are based on thresholding, smoothing and spot recognition. Wavelet transformations have also been applied to denoise 2D gels, however these techniques are typically in the frequency domain and they tend to shift spots slightly. In this paper, we improve the protein spot detection process by wavelet de-noising based on genetic algorithm.

This paper extends results about stability and stabilization of a retarded quasipolynomial obtained using the Mikhaylov criterion earlier. Retarded quasipolynomials appear as numerators and denominators of linear time-invariant time-delay systems (LTI-TDS). A LTI-TDS system of retarded type (destitute of distributed delays) is said to be stable if all roots of its characteristic quasipolynomial are located in the open left-half complex plane. The contribution transforms the formulation of spectrum assignment of a characteristic quasipolynomial into the language of the Nyquist criterion for the open loop of a control system. Again, the argument principle is utilized to derive generalized Nyquist criterion for LTI-TDS. Stability measures related to the criterion are discussed with the specifications for LTI-TDS. An illustrative example is presented to illuminate the results.

This paper presents small real-time operating system which has been developed at our institute and also an application and practical verification of this system in a portable data acquisition unit. The system, named RTMON is intended mainly as a teaching aid for lessons of microcontroller programming where it allows the students to simply write applications in C language with several concurrently running processes. However, it can also be used in practical applications, as is demonstrated by the data acquisition unit described in this paper. The system works on 8-bit microcontrollers with the HC(S)08 core made by Freescale and also on Atmel AVR Mega8 microcontrollers.

This contribution is focused on computation of stability regions for Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers. The area of possible placement of the controller parameters which guarantee feedback stabilization of a controlled plant is obtained via plotting the stability boundary locus. This approach is subsequently combined with the desired model method which is used for final controller design. The applicability of the technique is demonstrated on an example where a third order electronic laboratory model is successfully controlled.
