It is commonly accepted that universities are an important source of new knowledge, especially in the science and technology sector. The mechanisms to transfer this new knowledge from academia to business organizations are widely discussed by many authors. This paper presents how web collaboration environments may help in distance knowledge transfer and also a web conferencing example meant to stress the factors which led to a successful web meeting for knowledge diffusion. We present a new stabilization approach for a linear plant with input delay, parametric uncertainties, and an unknown harmonic disturbance. To solve this problem, we combine the well-known predictor feedback approach with the state observer and adaptive scheme that identifies the frequency of the disturbance. Compared to the existing approaches, the dynamic order of our adaptive scheme is low (equal to three) and the results apply to plants that are unstable, non-minimum phase, and have an arbitrary relative degree.

An adequate collaboration between the partners within a multinational project is essential for a successful project deployment. The activities developed by the project partnership involve usually decisions that collaboratively must be taken. Although the e-mail is the most used technology for distance collaboration, the team work within a multinational project involves collaborative activities and the decisions associated to it that only the e-mail cannot support. This paper presents several collaborative work examples and decision scenarios which are specific to many European funded multinational educational projects. The analysis of these scenarios shapes a list of features that a decision support system must provide in order to facilitate the collaborative activities developed in the frame of multinational projects.

This paper presents an investigation into proximity losses in end-windings informed from the 3D finite element analysis of an ac power inductor. The proximity effect in winding conductors is a result of circulating ac currents caused by magnetic fields generated by nearby conductors. The calculated results confirm that the effects within the end-winding whist significant are lower compared to those with the active length of the conductors. The common approach of predicting proximity losses using 2D field analyses accounts for active length of the conductors only, and therefore an end-winding correction factor is needed to obtain a more accurate estimate of loss. The theoretical prediction of losses within the inductor has been validated experimentally on a prototype inductor. The effect of winding temperature on proximity loss is also discussed.

If the dynamics of combined vehicles such as tractor-semitrailer varies greatly, it may be very difficult for inexperienced drivers to achieve good handling stability. Moreover, once combined vehicles become unstable, it is very difficult for all drivers to stabilize vehicles. However, if the behavior of actual combined vehicles tracks the designed ideal vehicle models, the good handling property can be maintained even when the dynamics of actual combined vehicles varies largely. In this paper, to achieve good handling property even for large variation of vehicle dynamics, a design method of ideal vehicle model for driver-vehicle systems is proposed, then, an adaptive steering controller is developed so that the actual vehicle tracks the ideal vehicle model. In the adaptive steering driver-vehicle systems, the actual vehicle can track the ideal vehicle model even when the dynamics of actual combined vehicles varies large. Using this property of adaptive steering driver-vehicle systems, the ideal vehicle model can be designed easily for different characteristics of driver. Carrying out numerical simulations, it is shown that good handling performance can be achieved when the actual vehicle tracks the designed ideal vehicle model.

Obesity is a rapidly spreading endemic in almost every country of the developed world, of which Hungary is no exception. By a joint research project we aim to deepen our understanding of obesity-associated, and especially obesity-predicting changes of clinical markers (anthropometric indices, body composition, laboratory results etc.) in children, especially in teenage population. This paper presents the preliminary results of our investigations which pertain to obesity-related alterations in routine blood test parameters. For that end, we examined 340 healthy and obese children. Results show that there are differences between the routine laboratory parameters of obese and healthy subjects that are both statistically significant and medically interesting. We point out these differences in a statistically precise way, and show a method which can be efficiently used to classify children based on their laboratory parameters. This result can be used later to develop a more realistic model to predict the risk of obesity.

In this paper a new approach for cancellation of a biased harmonic disturbance is proposed. Compared with a number of known results in this paper the disturbance compensation problem is solved when the output variable is measured only, a relative degree of the plant is arbitrary and the control channel has delay. The reaction wheel pendulum on a movable platform is considered as the plant to demonstrate how proposed approach can be plugged. Created by hand disturbance moves the platform in horizontal surface and the pendulum is oscillating. The second goal of this work is the development of mechatronic applications using in education.
