Cloud computing can be an useful tool when dealing with spatially distributed resources, which need to be simultaneously managed. In this work, a simulation environment is developed using OpenStack to apply a Distributed Model Predictive control strategy for a platooning application consisting of multiple autonomous mobile robots. The idea is to develop the entire algorithm by taking advantage of the possibility of creating virtual machines. Thus, each autonomous mobile robot is treated as an individual agent and is modeled and controlled on a virtual machine, whereas the communication between the agents is performed in the cloud, using the TCP/IP protocol standard. The simulation results illustrate that the platooning application deployed in OpenStack outperforms the simulation performed on a single computer.

The article analyzes modern computing devices that perform multiplication operations. The main classes of multipliers built on the basis of both electronic and optical elements are considered. The main disadvantage of these devices, which negatively affects their performance, is the inability to carry out parallel calculations with them. In turn, this disadvantage is due to the fact that multiplication of the multi-bit binary number in general is carried out by calculating the partial products of the bits of the multipliers and their addition with the inevitable implementation of a corresponding, usually very large, number of transfers. The presence of a large number of transfers fundamentally does not allow solving the problem of increasing the speed of calculations. The developed optical binary digital-to-analog multiplier is devoid of this drawback. This optical digital-to-analog multiplier is implemented on the basis of optical splitters, optical couplers and optical banners with a well-developed technology for their manufacture today, which provides a minimum delay time of the optical signal (in the picosecond range). The functional diagram of the proposed optical digital-to-analog multiplier is shown and the principle of its operation is described. The possibility of increasing the speed of this optical digital-to-analog multiplier to the potential for optical information processing circuits is shown.

This paper considers a minimum-order observer for the augmented system consisting of the nominal plant model and disturbance generating model (exosystem model). This paper shows that this minimum-order exosystem-model-based observer acts as a disturbance observer. Shikada and Sebe showed that the inverse-model-based disturbance observer can be realized as a full-order Luenberger-type observer for the nominal model. On the other hand, the exosystem-model-based disturbance observer is a full-order observer for the augmented system consisting of the nominal plant model and the exosystem model. Accordingly, the order of the exosystem-model-based disturbance observer is higher than that of the inverse-model-based disturbance observer. The minimum-order exosystem-model-based disturbance observer considered in this paper fills the gap of the difference in order. Furthermore, this paper also clarifies the one-to-one correspondence to the Luenberger-type disturbance observer for the nominal plant model. This correspondence shows that the minimum-order exosystem-model-based disturbance observer can achieve the same characteristics as the inverse-model-based disturbance observer.

Plants with integrators possess control-relevant modeling requirements that are typically ignored in the literature. Desired closed-loop speeds of response for such systems can differ significantly from their open-loop dynamics, causing conventional system identification guidelines to fail or be inaccurate. One such issue relates to experimental design. This paper presents guidelines for the design of excitation signals for system identification of plants with integrators, with application to the modeling and control of a microalgae raceway reactor. The concept is to excite the system through optimized test signals with control-relevant shaping of their power spectra. This facilitates a shift in emphasis of the identification objective from estimating a model with good open-loop performance to having a model possessing desired closed-loop characteristics. Such a consideration is particularly important when generating informative databases for estimating predictive models for closed-loop control. An illustration for this experimental design procedure is accomplished in this paper through the estimation of ARX-based models and, subsequently, model predictive control of the pH dynamics of an experimental raceway photobioreactor facility hosting sustainable microalgae production.

Inthis paper many improvements in dealing with energy quality issues that could arise in electrical drive systems using asynchronous machines are presented. A series active power filter is used in electrical drive systems with induction motors to reduce harmonic current and voltage. We also propose a variety of active power filters with hysteresis current value control. Lastly, some experimental results for an electrical drive system utilizing an induction motor and a PWM converter are provided.
