1ome frequently employed algorithms in engineering, are parallel by nature (embarrasingly parallel algorithms) and some others can be parallelized via data parallelization. Algorithms like probability analysis, linear homotopy continuation method, Gauss-Jacobi combinatorial technique are belonging to the first group, while others like algorithms for digital image processing as well as reduced Groenber basis application to solving systems of polynomial equations fall into the other category. In this case study we illustrate how Mathematica can manage to evaluate such algorithms parallel on a multicore machine. The analysis of the efficiency of the computation and the net reduction of the execution time are presented by three examples as well as some useful tips are given to avoid pitfalls and utilize the advantages of parallel processing.

In this paper a new approach on digital controller design based on logic neural networks is presented. In the first part of the paper the logic neuron and its logic function are introduced. Based on this, there is written the general equation for a logic neural network, which allows the easy design of any digital controller directly from the truth table. This solution is validated through MatLab Simulink modeling and simulation and then is implemented in a VLSI chip using PALASM HDL language and also in a ladder diagram PLC device. This method has the advantages of simplicity and flexibility and represents an easy to design modern solution.

As a novel bionic analytical technique, an electronic nose, inspired by the mechanism of the biological olfactory system and integrated with modern sensing technology, electronic technology and pattern recognition technology, has been widely used in many areas. Moreover, recent basic research findings in biological olfaction combined with computational neuroscience promote its development both in methodology and application. In this review, the basic information processing principle of biological olfaction and artificial olfaction are summarized and compared, and four olfactory models and their applications to electronic noses are presented. Finally, a chaotic olfactory neural network is detailed and the utilization of several biologically oriented learning rules and its spatiotemporal dynamic propties for electronic noses are discussed. The integration of various phenomena and their mechanisms for biological olfaction into an electronic nose context for information processing will not only make them more bionic, but also perform better than conventional methods. However, many problems still remain, which should be solved by further cooperation between theorists and engineers.

In numerous practical applications precise control of a subsystem passively connected to a precisely controllable subsystem by elastic connection is needed. As typical example is a crane carrying its payload swinging on an elastic string can be mentioned. From the point of view of control technology this task is interesting since the connected degree of freedom has little damping and it is apt to keep swinging accordingly. The traditional approaches apply the input shaping technology to assist the human operator responsible for the manipulation task. In the present paper a novel adaptive approach applying fixed point transformations based iterations having local basin of attraction is proposed for simultaneously tackle the problems originating from the imprecisions of the available dynamic model of the system to be controlled and the swinging phenomenon. In the simulation investigations presented a simple model consisting of two connected masspoints is considered: one of them can directly by controlled by control forces, the other one (in the role of the payload) is dragged by the controlled point via an elastic spring. The control considers the 4th time-derivative of the trajectory of the dragged system.

Reactor furnace control design is described in this paper. Reactor furnace, as controlled plant, is significantly nonlinear system and control objectives are strict. Thus, special control technique has to be applied. In this case, discrete PID controller tuned by artificial intelligence techniques is chosen. After reactor furnace description and first principle model derivation, the control method is closely defined. Then, nonlinear neural model of the furnace is designed and control loop is connected. Lastly, control performance is shown and compared to performance derived by conventional control method.

Navigation is a fundamental research topic in mobile robotics. Wireless sensor networks are providing distributed intelligence to support robot navigation, which effectively reduce the complexity due to dynamic and unstructured environments. For the purpose of efficient routing, a multiple Bloom-filters technique is introduced to support semantic queries and thus simplify the routing problem for a mobile robot. In this paper, we propose a new method for multiple Bloom-filters design using error expectation criterion, which can greatly reduce overall memory usage and produce a uniform relative error expectation for all paths. Simulation results show its effectiveness for multiple Bloom-filters design in comparison with the conventional method.

If the dynamics of combined vehicles such as tractor-semitrailer varies greatly, it may be very difficult for inexperienced drivers to achieve good handling stability. Moreover, once combined vehicles become unstable, it is very difficult for all drivers to stabilize vehicles. However, if the behavior of actual combined vehicles tracks a designed desired combined vehicle, the good handling property can be maintained even when the dynamics of actual combined vehicles varies large. In this paper, to achieve good handling property even for large variation of vehicle dynamics, a design method for a desired combined vehicle is shown, and then, an adaptive steering controller is developed so that the actual vehicle tracks the desired vehicle. The developed adaptive steering controller has strong robustness for the uncertainties of vehicle parameters. Moreover, a driver model is introduced to show the characteristics of driver. Carrying out numerical simulations, it is shown that the developed adaptive steering controller is very useful for the driver-combined-vehicles system.

The paper presents a new systematic analysis method in order to estimate the total absorbed power and energy in linear electric and magnetic circuits with modifiable parameters. The relation between the variation in one or all the resistances and reluctances of the networks and the variation of total absorbed power and energy are discussed using the Lagrange's method. For the considered applications the results are obtained with Mathematica and Maple useful for establishing the variation limits of absorbed power and energy.

Visual homing allows a robot to navigate towards a previously visited goal relying on visual input. In this study, the robot homes by optimising the difference surface produced from the mutual image information between a snapshot image taken at the goal and the current image. This study proposes a new homing method with automatic gain tuning inspired by entropy distance. We also present experimental results using omni-directional image sets, which demonstrate not only the feasibility of the proposed idea for visual homing but also adaptive and robust homing performance for both static and dynamic environments.
