A matrix framework is developed for modelling the workcell dynamics and designing digital controllers. The workcell functions are seperated from the controller, in the contrast to the Petri-net model where the workcell and the controller functions are undifferentiated This framework unites the industrial engineering approaches with the petri-net formulations and opens perspecrives for the sample-data control of flexible manufacturing systems. An illustrative example gives an overview of the overall design procedure.

This paper presents the original concept of computer-aided medical decisions, which simultaneously uses the information contained in the learning set and expert rules. Adopting the probabilistic model of diagnostic problem the rule-based decision algorithm with learning is presented. Proposed algorithm was applied practically to the diagnosis of acute renal failure in children. Obtained results have proved its effectiveness in the computer-aided medical decisionmaking.

control methods based on using the relative motion between the manipulator and the workpiece are described for controlling the force of a one-dimensional manipulator, in which it is assumed that there are no collisions between the manipulator and the workpiece and we use a computed force law which is similar to the computed torque law in the trajectory tracking problem of a manipulator. We consider two cases depending on whether the position and velocity of the workpiece (or end-effector) are available or not to calculate the computed force control. The effectiveness of the proposed control methods is illustrated by some computer simulations.

The estimation of the disturbance torque in a sensorless DC drive is carried out by extending the classical observer theory. Three estimation schemes are formulated according to the representation of the disturbance torque and processing of the observer states. In addition to the disturbance torque, all the schemes deliver an estimation of the motor speed. Steady-state accuracy and dynamics of the schemes are analyzed in nominal conditions, identifying the scheme with the best performance. The effects of variations in the motor parameters are also analyzed, finding that a proper modeling of the motor makes the steady-state estimation of the disturbance torque insensitive to any variation. As a test, the schemes are applied to a sensorless DC drive for both compensating for the disturbance torque and closing the speed loop. The responses obtained with the best-performance scheme are reported.< >

The authors propose a general strategy for applying biological adaptive metaphors to nonlinear process control. The metaphors considered consists of a mixture of neural networks, immune networks, and genetic algorithms. Issues regarding the fundamental limitations of these metaphors in process control are raised. An approach aimed at overcoming these limitations as far as possible is proposed. In particular, it is shown that the requirement that control be exercised by poorly adapted regimes can be circumvented, and a certain quality control guaranteed. The approach allows current controllers, whether conventional or of novel design (e.g., fuzzy or neural), to be integrated naturally into a coherent control scheme.< >

We present results of an analysis of the cognitive processes of an operator controlling the simulator of a complex plant (i.e., a Steam Generator Heavy Water Reactor, SGHWR). This research has been guided towards the adaptation of a computer-based model of an operator (COSIMO), to the specific task of controlling the SGHWR. The objective of the research is to analyse an operator’s cognitive processes in a problem solving situation, by focusing on aspects related to information checking and actions to be taken. Five problems to solve on the simulator were selected. Four operators participated in the experiments, three reactor foremen and one fuel foreman. Current techniques of observation and of protocol analysis have been employed for exploring cognitive processes.
