To facilitate responsive and cost-effective computing resource scheduling and service delivery over edge-assisted mobile networks, this paper investigates a novel two-stage double auction methodology via utilizing an interesting idea of resource overbooking to overcome dynamic and uncertain nature from edge servers (sellers) and demand from mobile devices (as buyers). The proposed auction integrates multiple essential factors such as social welfare maximization and decision-making latency (e.g., the time for determining winning seller-buyer pairs) reduction, by introducing a stagewise strategy: an overbooking-driven pre-double auction (OPDAuction) for determining long-term cooperations between sellers and buyers before practical resource transactions as Stage I, and a real-time backup double auction (RBDAuction) for handling residual resource demands during actual transactions. In particular, by applying a proper overbooking rate, OPDAuction helps with facilitating trading contracts between appropriate sellers and buyers as guidance for future transactions, by allowing the booked resources to exceed supply. Then, since pre-auctions may cause risks, our RBDAuction adjusts to real-time market changes, further enhancing the overall social welfare. More importantly, we offer an interesting view to show that our proposed two-stage auction can support significant design properties such as truthfulness, individual rationality, and budget balance. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate good performance in social welfare, time efficiency, and computational scalability, outstripping conventional methods in dynamic edge computing settings. Medical procedures, in particular those invasive, generate significant ethical, legal, and social concerns, including the issues of humanity and person-hood, stigma, autonomy, privacy and security, research ethics, safety, moral and legal responsibility, fair access, and justice. It was pointed out that future research should focus on developing practical solutions to the ethical challenges of medical experimental procedures with human participants, facilitated by the collection of empirical data on the perspectives shared by the general public, researchers and of course study participants. © 2023 IEEE.

Based on today’s modern technologies, patient care can be provided remotely, in a connected way, being, at the same time, personalized, patient-centered and proactive. Such an approach can be achieved using Remote Health Monitoring Systems (RHMS). In case of elderly people, dramatic permanent deteriorations of their health status can be caused by falls. The seniors’ health and life style monitoring and the detection and/or prevention of falls can be done by such RHMS, an example being the RO-SmartAgeing system developed inside “Non-invasive Monitoring System and Health Assessment of the Elderly in a Smart Environment (RO-SmartAgeing)” research project. The paper presents the problem of using microservices for optimizing the architecture and functionalities of RO-SmartAgeing system, and the way in which the problems of ensuring the security of patient data can be solved.

Joint Optimization of Power Allocation and Beamforming for UAV-RIS Communication System

This paper considers the communication system assisted by a fixed-trajectory unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which is equipped with a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). For this UAV-RIS assisted system, we jointly optimize the power allocation and active beamforming at the base station (BS) and the passive beamforming at the RIS, by a novel phase block coordinate descent algorithm framework aimed at maximizing the system sum-rate. Specifically, the joint optimization problem is decomposed into two phases, and we propose two optimization algorithms: one for BS power allocation using fractional programming (FP) and the other for jointly optimizing active and passive beamforming using FP-manifold, which alternately optimize two phases. Simulation results not only highlight the rapid convergence and evident superiority of our proposed framework but also reveal that the optimal UAV-RIS placement is related to the flight height. © 2012 IEEE.

— We propose a novel hybrid system (both hardware and software) of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) carrying a miniature Unmanned Ground Vehicle (miniUGV) to perform a complex search and manipulation task. This system leverages heterogeneous robots to accomplish a task that cannot be done using a single robot system. It enables the UAV to explore a hidden space with a narrow opening through which the miniUGV can easily enter and escape. The hidden space is assumed to be navigable for the miniUGV. The miniUGV uses Infrared (IR) sensors and a monocular camera search for an object in the hidden space. The proposed system takes advantage of a wider field of view (fov) of the camera as well as the stochastic nature of the object detection algorithms to guide the miniUGV in the hidden space to find the object. Upon finding the object the miniUGV grabs it using visual servoing and then returns back to its start point from where the UAV retracts it back and transports the object to a safe place. In case there is no object found in the hidden space, UAV continues the aerial search. The tethered miniUGV gives the UAV an ability to act beyond its reach and perform a search and manipulation task which was not possible before for any of the robots individually. The system has a wide range of applications and we have demonstrated its feasibility through repetitive experiments. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, a problem of autonomous ship utility model identification for control purposes is considered. In particular, the problem is formulated in terms of model parameter estimation (one-step-ahead prediction). This is a complex task due to lack of measurements of the parameter values, their time-variability and structural uncertainty introduced by the available models. In this work, authors consider and compare two utility models based on often utilised ship model structures with time-varying parameters identified recursively using the extended Kalman lter (EKF). The validation results have been obtained using simulation experiments in which the required information for the parameter estimation task had been generated using a cognitive model of B-481 ship. The results indicate the benefits and drawbacks, in terms of estimation accuracy and computational complexity, of using each of the investigated utility model structures. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Gaussian Process Phase Interpolation for estimating the asymptotic phase of a limit cycle oscillator from time series data

Rhythmic activity commonly observed in biological systems, occurring from the cellular level to the organismic level, is typically modeled as limit cycle oscillators. The phase reduction theory serves as a useful analytical framework for elucidating the synchronization mechanism of these oscillators. Essentially, this theory describes the dynamics of a multi-dimensional nonlinear oscillator using a single variable phase model. In order to understand and control the rhythmic phenomena in the real world, it is crucial to estimate the asymptotic phase from the observed data. In this study, we propose a new method, Gaussian Process Phase Interpolation (GPPI), for estimating the asymptotic phase from time series data. The GPPI method first evaluates the asymptotic phase on the limit cycle and subsequently estimates the asymptotic phase outside the limit cycle employing Gaussian process regression. Thanks to the high expressive power of Gaussian processes, the GPPI is capable of capturing a variety of functions. Notably, the GPPI is easily applicable even when the dimension of the system increases. The performance of the GPPI is tested by using simulation data from the Stuart-Landau oscillator and the Hodgkin-Huxley oscillator. The results demonstrate that the GPPI can accurately estimate the asymptotic phase even in the presence of high observation noise and strong nonlinearity. Additionally, the GPPI is demonstrated as an effective tool for data-driven phase control of a Hodgkin-Huxley oscillator. Thus, the proposed GPPI will facilitate the data-driven modeling of the limit cycle oscillators. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The embodiment (the sensation that an external object is part of one’s body scheme) is one of the processes targeted by the research in bionic prosthetics as a potential strategy to increase the acceptance of artificial limbs. This study investigates how one of the components of the embodiment, the body ownership (the sensation of possessing the external object), may be affected by a secondary task (possibly competing for cognitive resources requested for the embodiment itself) in a virtual exergame for prosthetic training. In this preliminary study participants, without impairments, are asked to perform activities of pick-and-place in two conditions by using a digital model of the Hannes bionic hand: (i) one is cognitively challenging, requiring to memorize the sequence of objects to move before it disappears; (ii) the other is non-challenging for the subject’s memory, with a constantly visible sequence. In both conditions, each subject is asked to catch objects according to the presented sequence. According to questionnaire data, we noticed how this procedure is feasible. Interestingly, the proprioceptive drift (the person is asked to indicate where they perceive their own real limb without looking at it) in a subsequent Rubber Hand Illusion session with the real bionic hand seems highlighting that the working memory-engaging secondary task can impair the embodiment process in terms of body ownership of the robotic hand. Probably, the memory task actually requires a type of cognitive resources that are necessary for the body ownership process itself during the multisensory stimulation. This allows for envisioning further investigations and novel design concepts for prosthetic training paradigms.

Comparison of Gated Recurrent Unit vs. Mixture Density Network in Insulin Sensitivity Prediction

There are several methods for the prediction of future values of a time series, or in general, for the probability density prediction problem. In this paper two neural network prediction models are compared: Mixture Density Network (MDN) and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) in the prediction of the insulin sensitivity (SI) of a patient under intensive care. The basic difference between the two methods is that while MDN is a stateless network model the GRU is a stateful model. In the study, both of the models predict the probability density function of the future SI value, but the MDN considers the physiological process like a Markov-chain: the future SI value depends lowly on the previous value. In contrast, the GRU model attempts to model the longer-term dependencies between subsequent SI values in its internal states and improve the prediction accuracy based on the information derived from the previous SI values. In the study we have found that the GRU implemented stateful prediction improved the prediction accuracy by 10 percent, showing the prediction power of the GRU model in physiological problems and proving the existence of longer-term dependencies in the SI time series. These outcomes confirm previously published results showing that the insulin sensitivity prediction can be improved considering the longer-term history of the patients.
