Creating an mHealth app for colorectal cancer screening: User-centered design approach

Background: Patients are increasingly using mobile health (mHealth) apps to monitor their health and educate themselves about medical issues. Despite the increasing popularity of such apps, poor design and usability often lead to suboptimal continued use of these apps and subsequently to poor adherence to the behavior changes at which they are aimed. One solution to these design problems is for app developers to use user-centered design (UCD) principles to consider the context and needs of users during the development process. Objective: This study aimed to present a case study on the design and development process for an mHealth app that uses virtual human technology (VHT) to encourage colorectal cancer (CRC) screening among patients aged 50 years and above. Methods: We have first provided an overview of the project and discussed its utilization of VHT. We have then reviewed UCD principles and how they can be incorporated into the development of health apps. We have described how we used UCD processes during the app’s development. We have then discussed the unique roles played by communication researchers, computer scientists, clinicians, and community participants in creating an mHealth app that is credible, usable, effective, and accessible to its target audience. Results: The principles of UCD were woven throughout the project development, with researchers collecting feedback from patients and providers at all stages and using that feedback to improve the credibility, usability, effectiveness, and accessibility of the mHealth app. The app was designed in an iterative process, which encouraged feedback and improvement of the app and allowed teams from different fields to revisit topics and troubleshoot problems. Conclusions: Implementing a UCD process contributed to the development of an app, which not only reflected cross-disciplinary expertise but also the needs, wants, and concerns of patients. © Lauren Griffin, Donghee Lee, Alyssa Jaisle, Peter Carek, Thomas

On designing an automated tool for capacitors removal from waste printed circuits boards

The mass electronics sector is one of the most important sources of waste, both in terms of volume and materials content with dangerous effects on the environment. Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) are the most valuable component embedded into Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEEs). The current amount of electronic systems is impressive while manual dismantling is a very common and non-efficient solution. On average, waste PCB accounts almost from 3% to 5% of the overall weight of waste electrical and electronic equipment. At this time, in Romania, the implemented solutions for waste PCB reduction are in a research phase, with no existing technological procedures that can be replicated. In the context of the TRADE-IT project we aim to design replicable architectures for waste printed boards reduction. Starting from the largest base plate and continuing to the smallest size, Extended ATX, ATX, Micro ATX, Mini ITX are some of the most used boards in a computer. When choosing a base plate from the ATX and/or microATX range, the shape factor must fit on a universal support bracket. The shape factor identifies the size of the circuit board, the location of the slots, and the location of the display board that comes out on the back of the computer. The shape factor also identifies the location of the holes that are used to mount the base plate in the universal clamp holder. Taking into account that capacitors represent approximately 8.6% of the PCB mass, we aim at designing an automated driven tool for their removal. The design is based on a robotic arm for motion manoeuvring, a programmable screwdriver and a custom-made end tool. In the current phase the proposed design was evaluated on controlled individual tests. The initial results highlight the feasibility of the proposed design while uncovering potential challenges for real-time implementation.

Summary Being the second-largest country in the Middle East, Iran has a long history of civilisation during which several dynasties have been overthrown and established and health-related structures have been reorganised. Iran has had the replacement of traditional practices with modern medical treatments, emergence of multiple pioneer scientists and physicians with great contributions to the advancement of science, environmental and ecological changes in addition to large-scale natural disasters, epidemics of multiple communicable diseases, and the shift towards non-communicable diseases in recent decades. Given the lessons learnt from political instabilities in the past centuries and the approaches undertaken to overcome health challenges at the time, Iran has emerged as it is today. Iran is now a country with a population exceeding 80 million, mainly inhabiting urban regions, and has an increasing burden of non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes, malignancies, mental disorders, substance abuse, and road injuries.

The paper presents a new algorithm for adaptive classification of sleep stages using multimodal data recorded in the sleep laboratory during overnight polysomnography records. The proposed method includes the learning process applied for the set of individuals with their sleep stages classified by an experienced neurologist. Features evaluated for time windows 30 s long and selected multimodal signals are used for construction and optimization of the proposed two-layer neural network model. Resulting computational system based upon breathing EEG and EOG features is used for analysis of new individuals to detect their sleep stages. Results include classification accuracy higher than 80% and 90% for Wake and REM stages, respectively. The proposed method can adaptively modify model coefficients to detect sleep stages and sleeping disorders using man-machine interaction. © 2017 IEEE.

We discuss the emergence of oscillations in networks of single-input- single-output systems that interact via linear time-delay coupling *** the systems itself are inert, that is, their solutions converge to a globally stable equilibrium, in the presence of coupling, the network of systems exhibits ongoing oscillatory *** address the problem of emergence of oscillations by deriving conditions for;1. solutions of the time-delay coupled systems to be bounded, 2. the network equilibrium to be unique, and 3. the network equilibrium to be unstable. If these conditions are all satisfied, the time-delay coupled inert systems have a nontrivial oscillatory solution. In addition, we show that a necessary condition for the emergence of oscillations in such networks is that the considered systems are at least of second order. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2017.

Chronic care manages long-term, progressive conditions, while acute care addresses short-term conditions. Chronic conditions increasingly strain health systems, which are often unprepared for these demands. This study examines the burden of conditions requiring acute versus chronic care, including sequelae. Conditions and sequelae from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019 were classified into acute or chronic care categories. Data were analysed by age, sex, and socio-demographic index, presenting total numbers and contributions to burden metrics such as Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years Lived with Disability (YLD), and Years of Life Lost (YLL). Approximately 68% of DALYs were attributed to chronic care, while 27% were due to acute care. Chronic care needs increased with age, representing 86% of YLDs and 71% of YLLs, and accounting for 93% of YLDs from sequelae. These findings highlight that chronic care needs far exceed acute care needs globally, necessitating health systems to adapt accordingly. © 2025. The Author(s).

The purpose of this paper is the development of a nonlinear model based predictive control strategy for the autonomous control of the steering system for ground vehicles. The control system is aimed to automatically steer the vehicle along a desired trajectory. The developed strategy uses control Lyapunov functions to guarantee the stability of the closed-loop control system. In order to obtain reliable results, a nonlinear vehicle dynamic model is used in the design phase of the controller. The model incorporates the tire-ground contact nonlinearities and describes with higher accuracy the real vehicle dynamics. The proposed approach is validated using simulation results and it is shown that this approach could provide good performances in practical use. © 2016

The accurate prediction of manufacturing lead times (LT) significantly influences the quality and efficiency of production planning and scheduling (PPS). Traditional planning and control methods mostly calculate average lead times, derived from historical data. This often results in the deficiency of PPS, as production planners cannot consider the variability of LT, affected by multiple criteria in today’s complex manufacturing environment. In case of semiconductor manufacturing, sophisticated LT prediction methods are needed, due to complex operations, mass production, multiple routings and demands to high process resource efficiency. To overcome these challenges, supervised machine learning (ML) approaches can be employed for LT prediction, relying on historical production data obtained from manufacturing execution systems (MES). The paper examines the use of state-of-the-art regression algorithms and their effect on increasing accuracy of LT prediction. Through a real industrial case study, a multi-criteria comparison of the methods is provided, and conclusions are drawn about the selection of features and applicability of the methods in the semiconductor industry.

Genetic programming (GP) is a technique widely used in a range of symbolic regression problems, in particular when there is no prior knowledge about the symbolic function sought. In this paper, we present a GP extension introducing a new concept of local transformed variables, based on a locally applied affine transformation of the original variables. This approach facilitates finding accurate parsimonious models. We have evaluated the proposed extension in the context of the Single Node Genetic Programming (SNGP) algorithm on synthetic as well as real-problem datasets. The results confirm our hypothesis that the transformed variables significantly improve the performance of the standard SNGP algorithm. © 2017 by SCITEPRESS - Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

A Grassmann Matrix Approach for the Computation of Degenerate Solutions for Output Feedback Laws

The paper is concerned with the improvement of the overall sensitivity properties of a method to design feedback laws for multivariable linear systems which can be applied to the whole family of determinantal type frequency assignment problems, expressed by a unified description, the so-called Determinantal Assignment Problem (DAP). By using the exterior algebra/algebraic geometry framework, DAP is reduced to a linear problem (zero assignment of polynomial combinants) and a standard problem of multilinear algebra (decomposability of multivectors) which is characterized by the set of Quadratic Plücker Relations (QPR) that define the Grassmann variety of P. This design method is based on the notion of degenerate compensator, which are the solutions that indicate the boundaries of the control design and they provide the means for linearising asymptotically the nonlinear nature of the problems and hence are used as the starting points to generate linearized feedback laws. A new algorithmic approach is introduced for the computation and the selection of degenerate solutions (decomposable vectors) which allows the computation of static and dynamic feedback laws with reduced sensitivity (and hence more robust solutions). This approach is based on alternative, linear algebra type criterion for decomposability of multivectors to that defined by the QPRs, in terms of the properties of structured matrices, referred to as Grassmann Matrices. The overall problem is transformed to a nonlinear maximization problem where the objective function is expressed via the Grassmann Matrices and the first order conditions for optimality are reduced to a nonlinear eigenvalue-eigenvector problem. Hence, an iterative method similar to the power method for finding the largest modulus eigenvalue and the corresponding eigenvector is proposed as a solution for the above problem. © 2017
