Evolutionary meta-heuristics are designed for optimization using population with selection and mutation operators. Novelty of our approach is based on competition of various operators from mutation portfolio. Resulting meta-heuristic is successfully tested on the feature selection task: searching for a sparse sub-model having the best possible value by means of information criteria. Beginning with such statistical formulation we obtain an NP-hard optimization task which can be efficiently solved via meta-heuristic approach. We demonstrate how metaheuristic optimization combined with statistics can enhance machine learning models and therefore is useful in Computational Intelligence in general.

This paper proposes an improvement over Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW) compression algorithm by employing a new method that uses exponential decay (ED) as a tool to manage and remove infrequently used entries in the LZW dictionary. The presented results demonstrate that ED may be an efficient tool to manage and refresh the LZW dictionary. The achieved compression ratio is higher than in the traditional methods like Dictionary Reset DR and Least Recently used LRU. The experimental results demonstrate that the dictionary refresh by the ED may provide higher compression ratio, compared with the original LZW algorithm. In order to investigate the benefits of ED method, it is compared with some other way of LRU-based enhancements. In particular, we consider a LRU-like LZW scheme with Huffman coding of difference from last used word.

The driving of the Szabad(ka)-II hexapod robot was characterized with its minimal and non-optimized structure during the development of the robot. For this driving algorithm, a simulation environment has been developed, and based on the simulation model and recorded measurement results, the aforementioned algorithm has been validated. In the next step of the development, the optimization of the robot driving algorithm was elaborated in its simulation environment. In order, to implement the optimized controllers and trajectory, the software of the embedded system has to be rewritten, through which the developed fuzzy controllers and the high resolution legtrajectories could be run on the robot. This paper on the one hand, introduces the essential aspects of the implementation and realization procedures of the optimized driving algorithm, on the other hand, gives a comparison assessment of the old and the new driving algorithms.

This paper deals with the problem of identification of the current-voltage characteristic equation of photovoltaic arrays. This paper describes the joint effort of the two FP7 EU projects CLERECO and MoRV toward the definition of an extended reliability information exchange format able to manage reliability information for the full system stack, from technology up to the software level. The paper starts from the RIIF language initiative, proposing a set of new features to improve the expression power of the language and to extend it to the software layer of a system. The proposed extended reliability information exchange format named RIIF-2 has the potential to support the development of next generation reliability analysis tools that will help to fully include reliability evaluation into an automated design flow, pushing cross-layer reliability considerations at the same level of importance as area, timing and power consumption when performing design exploration for new products.

The problem of simple adaptive and robust control is studied for the case of parametric and dynamic dimension uncertainties: only the maximum possible relative degree of the plant model is known. The control approach “consecutive compensator” is investigated. To illustrate the eficiency of proposed approach an example with the mobile robot motion control using computer vision system is considered. Some remarks about mapping algorithms using stereo cameras and laser scanner for implementation in new home robots are considered. © 2015

The aim of the study was to determine the influence of the laser processing on the properties of electro-spark coatings. The properties were assessed by analyzing the coating microstructure, X-ray radiation, microhardness, corrosion resistance, porosity and tribological tests. In addition, the paper presents the results of measurements and analysis of electrical pulse during ESD. The tests were carried out on WC-Cu coating (the anode) obtained by electro spark deposition over carbon steel C45 (the cathode) and molten with a laser beam. The coatings were deposited by means of the EIL-8A and they were laser treated with the Nd:YAG. The tests show that the laser-treated electro-spark deposited WC-Cu coatings are characterized by lower hardness and friction force, higher seizure resistance, roughness. The laser treatment process causes the homogenization of the chemical composition, the structure refinement and the healing of microcracks and pores of the electro-spark deposited coatings. Laser treated electro-spark deposited coatings are likely to be applied in sliding friction pairs and as protective coatings.

This paper is a result of the university-industry collaboration between ITMO University and Thermex. A subject of this cooperative investigation is robotic automation of industrial operations in the sense of organizing a cyber-physical system and reducing the human factor from the production. Tasks of a technological process considered in the paper are welding, transporting and polishing. They are simulated on the basis of the laboratory of the department of control Systems and informatics. Robots used in this study are Mitsubishi MELFA RV-3SDB, KUKA youBot and Kawasaki FS06N. Three control levels are highlighted in the paper. There is the strategic level at the top. Its main part is a central control software based on MATLAB used to set up a network and coordinate robots between the operations. control of a separate robot corresponds to the tactic level. Finally, the local level is assigned to control of actuators and get data from sensors.
