Analyzing the impact of software execution on the reliability of a complex digital system is an increasing challenging task. Current approaches mainly rely on time consuming fault injections experiments that prevent their usage in the early stage of the design process, when fast estimations are required in order to take design decisions. To cope with these limitations, this paper proposes a statistical reliability analysis model based on Bayesian Networks. The proposed approach is able to estimate system reliability considering both the hardware and the software layer of a system, in presence of hardware transient and permanent faults. In fact, when digital system reliability is under analysis, hardware resources of the processor and instructions of program traces are employed to build a Bayesian Network. Finally, the probability of input errors to alter both the correct behavior of the system and the output of the program is computed. According to experimental results presented in this paper, it can be stated that Bayesian Network model is able to provide accurate reliability estimations in a very short period of time. As a consequence it can be a valid alternative to fault injection, especially in the early stage of the design.

The paper is concern with the investigation of control of Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) carried out by Rotor Side Converter (RSC) applied in wind energy harvest. Throughout the paper the principle of Stator Flux Oriented Vector control (SFOVC) is applied. In the first part of the paper a general slip-torque relation is derived with three torque components: one component is derived by the stator voltage, the other one by the d component and the third one by the q component of the rotor voltage space vector. In the second part of the paper, the dynamic behavior of the algorithm controlling the stator active and reactive power is simulated in open loop and closed loop.

Distance fields show up in many problems of 3D vision and rendering, for example, a volumetric fusion of depth images results in such a field. Distance fields obtained from measured values are inherently noisy, so its filtering is needed before isoparametric surfaces are extracted from them, and robust normal vector estimation also requires a local smoothing since differentiation is especially sensitive to noise. In this paper, we use regression to find a quadratic function that approximates the zero level surface of the distance field, and apply this both for filtering and normal vector estimation. We also present a computationally efficient method that exploits the regular structure of samples, the symmetry and separability of the weighting functions, and thus avoids the solution of larger linear equations, which otherwise would become necessary when regression is generally attacked. The algorithm is a part of a real-time volumetric fusion application running on the Graphics Processing Units (GPU).

Nowadays, the scientific community is looking for ways to understand the effect of software execution on the reliability of a complex system when the hardware layer is unreliable. This paper proposes a statistical reliability analysis model able to estimate system reliability considering both the hardware and the software layer of a system. Bayesian Networks are employed to model hardware resources of the processor and instructions of program traces. They are exploited to investigate the probability of input errors to alter both the correct behavior and the output of the program. Experimental results show that Bayesian networks prove to be a promising model, allowing to get accurate and fast reliability estimations w.r.t. fault injection/simulation approaches.

The proposed Pareto ranking scheme is meant for the selection of parents and survivors in multi-objective evolutionary optimizations. Commonly, the Pareto methods use just the dominance analysis in order to provide the partial sorting of solutions, without taking into account the specific strength of the conflict detected between objectives. This can generate undesired effects, such as the loss of diversity or the excessive spread of solutions induced by too weakly or too strongly conflicting criteria, respectively. For counteracting these disadvantages, the suggested approach adapts the ranking policies with respect to the distribution of the population in the objective space. The first innovation of the paper resides in the way in which the layout of the available solutions is examined. The analysis is based on clustering, followed by the Pareto-ranking of the resulted centers. The centers belonging to the best fronts are then used to depict the preferred searching area and to decide if the diversity of the solutions requires improvement. In this regard, the second contribution supports the diversification of the preferred solutions via rank adjustments. The suggested ranking algorithm is experimentally verified on several synthetic multi-objective optimizations and a multi-objective robot path planning. The testing scenarios exemplify different layouts of the Pareto fronts for diverse conflictive relationships between the two objectives.
