This paper proposes two algorithms adopted in a prototype network architecture, for optimal selection of multimedia content delivery methods, as well as balanced delivery load, by exploiting a novel resource prediction engine. The proposed architecture exploits both algorithms for the prediction of future multimedia services demands, by providing the ability to keep optimal the distribution of the streaming data, among Content Delivery Networks, cloud-based providers and Home Media Gateways. In addition, the prediction of the upcoming fluctuations of the network, provides the ability to the proposed network architecture, achieving optimized Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) for the end users. Both algorithms were evaluated to establish their efficiency, towards effectively predicting future network traffic demands. The experimental results validated their performance and indicated fields for further research and experimentation.

Data mining of a remote behavioral tracking system for type 2 diabetes patients: A prospective cohort study

Background: Complications from type 2 diabetes mellitus can be prevented when patients perform health behaviors such as vigorous exercise and glucose-regulated diet. The use of smartphones for tracking such behaviors has demonstrated success in type 2 diabetes management while generating repositories of analyzable digital data, which, when better understood, may help improve care. Data mining methods were used in this study to better understand self-monitoring patterns using smartphone tracking software. Objective: Associations were evaluated between the smartphone monitoring of health behaviors and HbA1c reductions in a patient subsample with type 2 diabetes who demonstrated clinically significant benefits after participation in a randomized controlled trial. Methods: A priori association-rule algorithms, implemented in the C language, were applied to app-discretized use data involving three primary health behavior trackers (exercise, diet, and glucose monitoring) from 29 participants who achieved clinically significant HbA1c reductions. Use was evaluated in relation to improved HbA1c outcomes. Results: Analyses indicated that nearly a third (9/29, 31%) of participants used a single tracker, half (14/29, 48%) used two primary trackers, and the remainder (6/29, 21%) of the participants used three primary trackers. Decreases in HbA1c were observed across all groups (0.97-1.95%), but clinically significant reductions were more likely with use of one or two trackers rather than use of three trackers (OR 0.18, P=.04). Conclusions: Data mining techniques can reveal relevant coherent behavior patterns useful in guiding future intervention structure. A novel approach to the problem of partial state estimation of a class of nonlinear systems is proposed. In this paper we apply the new adaptive observer design technique to power converters. For the sake of ease of exposition we preferred to concentrate on the specific example of the Ćuk power converter. The main idea is to translate the state estimation problem into one of estimation of constant, unknown parameters related to the systems initial conditions. The proposed observer is shown to be applicable for the reconstruction of the state of power converters for further using in the full-state feedback controller. Comparison with Immersion and Invariance technique for the observer design is made via numerical examples.

The paper proposes a simple Takagi-Sugeno PI-fuzzy controller for an anaerobic digestion process. A fifth order nonlinear model of the anaerobic digestion process is first presented. A second order linear model of the process is next proposed, and the parameters of the linear model are obtained from an optimization problem solved by a Gravitational Search Algorithm. A PI controller is designed for the linear process model using a frequency domain approach in terms of imposing the phase margin. The Takagi-Sugeno PI-fuzzy controller is designed on the basis of the linear PI controller. The Takagi-Sugeno PI-fuzzy controller is validated by simulation using the nonlinear process model in the fuzzy control system.

This paper studies the evaluation of the video streaming over Mobile Peer-to-Peer (MP2P) networks using Scalable Video Coding. The proposed research framework exploits the MP2P diversity characteristics where each node acts as a Mobile Peer for every neighboring node in a relay-based communicating path. Mobile Peers use a common look-up table to request video streaming resources in order to estimate the video packets transfer duration in the end-to-end path. The collaborative streaming is achieved through the data packets replication policy, which uses a bounded upper time limitation for the video packets of each layer (Use of Scalable Video). Each node/device utilizes a specified amount of capacity for both channel and storage purposes. Different scenarios have been introduced in this paper towards evaluating the video streaming policy in the MP2P system, using a real-time probabilistic Fractional Brownian Motion (FBM) and a Random Waypoint (RWP) Mobility model. In both models, nodes move according to certain probabilities, location and time. Intermittent connectivity occurs while nodes claim video streams, whereas promiscuous caching policy enables -where possible-recoverability of lost packets offering priority to packets from the base layer. The simulation results show that FBM provides better objective and subjective quality results for two video sequences resolution, in the MP2P network configuration.

This paper examines the effects of increasing the latency in pipeline systems. The high level synthesis methods focus on the pipeline throughput only, and the latency is an output parameter. The proposed method is capable for reducing the cost of the implementation by increasing the latency at the same throughput. The essence of the proposed method is that an increase in the latency may increase the mobility ranges of the processing units. Thus, the increased degrees of freedom may cause better implementation by affecting the scheduling and allocation steps. An impact assessment algorithm for calculating proper latency increment range is also presented. © 2014, Technical University of Budapest. All rights reserved.

Infrastructure-based cooperation can significantly boost the communication performance of vehicular ad hoc networks, especially when direct transmission of inter-vehicle communication can hardly achieve the stringent requirement of safety information dissemination. In this paper, an analytical model is presented to demonstrate the performance gain of channel capacity for infrastructure-based cooperative transmission. Furthermore, we study the capacity performance for both direct transmission and cooperative communication, under generic path loss model and the measurement-based dual-slope piecewise-linear model, respectively. The analytical results can be used for vehicular networks design and roadside infrastructure deployment in highway scenarios.

Parallel projection based Single Emission Computed Tomography is a widely used nuclear imaging technique. Non-homogeneous attenuation medium and the distance dependent spacial resolution (DDSR) of the parallel imaging cause serious artefacts during image reconstruction. Both effects are dependent on the energy of gamma photons used for imaging. In this paper an efficient parallel reconstruction algorithm is introduced that is executed on the Graphics Processing Unit. The aim of the presented study was to investigate the possibilities of reconstruction techniques when multi-energy photon emitters are used. An analytical 3D projector with attenuation and detector response modelling was used to generate projection sets for Gallium-67 isotope studies. Data were reconstructed from one photopeak only using the corresponding attenuation map. The projection data sets were added together and reconstructed using average attenuation and DDSR compensation values as well as simulating every photopeak individually. The third combined reconstruction technique was using every projection set as separate measurement. In this study we showed that all three strategies result in similar image quality, however the average attenuation correction method is computationally less demanding.

The user behavior is one of the key factors to impact the communication performance of vehicular ad hoc networks. Generally, more active vehicles can enhance the connectivity performance. Nevertheless, an increasing number of active vehicles may bring about significant interference and thus negatively affect the connectivity. In this paper, a highway model is presented to study the effects of active vehicle ratio on connectivity performance in the presence of co-channel interference. A closed form expression of the inter-vehicle connectivity probability is also derived to evaluate the impacts of active ratio, traffic flow, and fading factors under Nakagami fading channel. Analytical results of inter-vehicle connectivity probability are shown to be consistent with the simulation results, and can be applied to estimate connectivity performance with interference in the network design for highway vehicular scenarios.
