Bacteriorhodopsin (bR) is a light-sensitive protein which has a proton-pump function, and is found in the cell membrane of Halobacterium salinarum inhabiting the salt lake. Optical excitation of bR at an electrode-electrolyte interface generates differential photocurrents while an incident light is turned on and off. This unique functional response is similar to that seen in retinal neurons. This paper describes the fabrication and evaluation of the dip-coated bR thin films, photocurrent characteristics, and biomimetic artificial retinas with the bR thin films.

This paper investigates the performance of a single-phase induction motor (SPIM) drive operated as two-phase motor (TPIM) and controlled basing on fuzzy logic (FL). Because of coupling behavior between fluxes in motor, it is still necessary to advance in controller tuning. The applied control strategy proposed in this paper is the vector control based on fuzzy controllers. The application of this control strategy to the single-phase motor operating as two-phase motor increases its dynamic performance and constitutes a contribution to the study of this machine. Indeed, this type of machine has not yet taken its whole share from various works present until now, compared to the three-phase induction machine. The performances of the proposed control; applied to the single-phase induction motor supplied by voltage source inverter; are investigated by simulations under different operating conditions. The obtained results; compared to the traditional control method based on conventional controllers (CC); show the effectiveness and stronger robustness of the control system.

That is because all the information needed to describe the entire structure is given by the elementary substructure itself and by the manner it repeats in the whole periodic structure. So, only a small portion of the structure (which includes the repeating substructure) needs to be considered to obtain the properties of the whole periodic structure. In that context, the contribution provides the discussion of some system periodicity issues, and is aimed at modeling and evaluation of relationships linking the system structure features with required system's functioning.

The paper is concerned with defining and parametrising the families of all degenerate compensators (feedback, squaring down etc) emerging in a variety of linear control problems. Such compensators indicate the boundaries of the control design, but they also provide the means for linearising the non-linear nature of the Determinantal Assignment Problems, which provide the unifying description for all frequency assignment problems (pole, zero) under static and dynamic compensation schemes. The conditions provide the means for the selection of appropriate degenerate solutions that allow frequency assignability in the corresponding frequencies.

In a series of paper the authors proposed a new frequency-domain approach to identify poles in discrete-time linear systems. The discrete rational transfer function is represented in a rational Laguerre-basis, where the basis elements are expressed by powers of the Blaschke-function. This function can be interpreted as a congruence transform on the Poincaré unit disc model of the hyperbolic geometry. The identification of a pole is given as a hyperbolic transform of the limit of a quotient-sequence formed from the Laguerre-Fourier coefficients. In this paper the opportunities of reliably computing the poles are analyzed, and some algorithms are proposed for practical use.
