This paper investigates the performance of simultaneously transmitting and reflecting surface (STARS) assisted semi-grant-free non-orthogonal multiple access network with randomly distributed users. By deploying STARS, the transmit signals of grant-based user (GBU) and grant-free users (GFUs) can be exquisitely adjusted to reduce interference. We propose a maximum channel scheduling (MCS) protocol that allows a GFU to access GBU’s channel with the assistance of STARS. In particular, the impacts of perfect/imperfect successive interference cancellation (pSIC/ipSIC) on MCS protocol are taken into account. To characterize the performance of STARS aided MCS (STARS-MCS) network, we derive the expressions of outage probability for GBU and GFU with pSIC/ipSIC. By applying convolution theorem and Laplace transform, the asymptotic expressions of outage probability and diversity orders for GBU and GFU are attained. We further design a STARS-based power control (SPC) strategy to eliminate the outage probability error floor and improve the outage performance. Numerical results show that: 1) The performance of STARS-MCS outperforms the existing benchmarks in terms of outage probability and system throughput;2) The SPC strategy can effectively improve the performance of the STARS-MCS network and eliminate the outage probability error floor at high signal-to-noise ratios;and 3) By adjusting reflection and transmission coefficients of STARS, the outage performance of GBU and GFU can be greatly enhanced. © 2025 IEEE. In the context of Industrial Anomaly Detection (IAD), ensuring the quality of manufactured products is critical. Traditional 2D based methods often fail to capture anomalies present in complex 3D shapes. For effective anomaly detection in 3D shapes, it is essential to incorporate global semantic context, local geometric structure, and color information of the object. To fully leverage these features, we propose a network named 2M3DF, that leverages knowledge from multi-view RGB images and corresponding point cloud information for enhanced anomaly detection performance. Our model initially employs pre-trained feature extractors that generate local features from multi-view RGB images and corresponding point clouds. The novel inter-modality feature representation and fusion module first adapts these inter-modality features and then effectively aligns and aggregates these multimodality features on a pixel-to-point basis. To learn the normality from point-wise fused multimodal features, we fit a multivariate Gaussian distribution to model the normal feature distribution. Comprehensive experimental evaluations using the MVTec3D-AD and Eyecandies dataset validate the effectiveness of our propose model and demonstrate significant improvements in comparison to existing state-of-the-art methods. Our model achieves a 96.6% mean I-AUROC while delivering real-time results. © 1991-2012 IEEE.

A generalized method for evaluating immediate post-earthquake losses of buildings from different perspectives

The evaluation of immediate post-earthquake losses of buildings is crucial for advancing resilience-based seismic design. To facilitate the development of resilient buildings, a generalized method suitable for any occupancy type of building is proposed to evaluate immediate post-earthquake losses of buildings from engineering, economic, and social perspectives. A functional composition diagram of the building story is constructed, and the story functionality is quantified by using the hierarchical belief rule base inference method based on the evidential reasoning algorithm. The functional composition diagram incorporates the service status of utility systems, such as power, water, communication, heating, and drainage networks, to reflect their impact on the story functionality. Intra-story damage relevance and inter-story functionality relevance of the building are also considered in the functional loss evaluation. To evaluate direct economic loss, two methods for calculating the repair cost ratio are proposed. The choice of method hinges on the level of detail available. Direct social loss is quantified in terms of the casualty ratio, with considerations for the varying impacts of different casualty severity levels on society. Applying this generalized method to a teaching building, the results show that the functional loss is more severe compared to the direct economic and social losses. From the perspective of resilience-based seismic design, it is essential to focus on mitigating functional losses of buildings. This method can provide guidance for pre-earthquake strengthening efforts and post-earthquake recovery strategies for buildings and contribute to advancing resilience-based seismic design. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V. 2025.

Robust Finite-Time Containment of Networked Heterogeneous Nonlinear Systems with Intermittent Measurement Only

The robust finite-time containment problem of fully heterogeneous multiagent systems with uncertainties is often challenging, especially when only intermittent output measurement is used. To address the issue posed by the nonidentical system dynamics of multiple leaders, which makes the traditional distributed estimator form for the convex hull inapplicable, a distributed finite-time estimator is constructed for each follower to extract the system matrices and states of leaders. Then, in the output-triggering setting, a finite-time extended state observer driven by intermittent output measurement is developed to reconstruct the uncertainties and unmeasurable states of followers. Meanwhile, the non-continuous output measurement will lead to the differentiation of virtual control laws undefined. To solve this issue, a filtering compensation scheme-based finitetime controller via the backstepping technique is developed for nonlinear followers, ensuring practical finite-time stability (PFTS) of the closed-loop system. It is shown that the proposed algorithm steers each follower into the preset convex combination spanned by the positions of multiple leaders. The rapid digitization of healthcare systems has led to a vast accumulation of electronic medical records (EMRs), offering an invaluable source of patient data that can significantly advance medical research and improve patient care. However, sharing EMRs for research purposes presents challenges, particularly concerning data privacy, security, and the limitations of traditional centralized data-sharing models. This paper introduces a novel approach that leverages blockchain technology to facilitate federated learning with EMRs, thereby addressing these challenges. Federated learning enables multiple institutions to collaboratively train a robust machine learning model without sharing raw data, preserving privacy and security. By integrating blockchain, this framework enhances data integrity, immutability, and trust, all in a decentralized environment. The blockchain serves as a transparent and secure ledger, recording model updates and aggregating them through a consensus-based mechanism. Smart contracts further enforce data usage policies, allowing only authorized access and maintaining control over data ownership and sharing. This approach empowers medical researchers and institutions to collaborate more effectively, accelerating the discovery of treatments, advancements in personalized medicine, and insights into rare diseases. It also enables patients to contribute to medical research while retaining control over their personal data, fostering a patient-centered approach to healthcare innovation. Experimental results confirm the efficacy and efficiency of this blockchain-enabled federated learning framework, highlighting its potential to transform medical research and adhere to stringent privacy and security standards. This study emphasizes the pivotal role of blockchain in enhancing big data analytics within healthcare, paving the way for improved collaboration, innovation, and patient outcomes. © 2025 IEEE.

Advanced oxidation process based on persulfate activation has been considered as a proven and effective means of rapidly removing organic pollutants from sewage. However, the low efficiency of heterogeneous catalysts still hinders its widespread application. Herein, FeWO4 synthesized by solvothermal method, using different water/alcohol mixed solvents, is employed to photocatalytically activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for antibiotics degradation. Different alcohols [monohydric (ethanol), dihydric (ethylene glycol), and trihydric (glycerin)] significantly affect the morphology, pore structure, and bandgap structure of FeWO4, which can modulate its catalytic activity. It is found that as the alcoholic hydroxyl groups increase, the FeWO4 morphology gradually changes from nanorods to nanoparticles, accompanied by an increase in specific surface-area and pores, an extension of reaction-interface and light-absorption area, and exposure of more active sites. Among them, FeWO4(DZ:GI=2:8), synthesized in a deionized water/glycerol mixed solvent with a volume ratio of 2:8, exhibits the highest photocatalytic activity for activating PMS. Within 15 mins, the removal rate of tetracycline (TC) catalyzed by FeWO4(DZ:GI=2:8) reaches 100%. Free radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra confirmed that oxygen singlet (1O2) has a key role in TC degradation. Whereas hydroxyl radicals (•OH), holes (h+), superoxide radicals (•O2-), and sulfate radicals (SO4•−) play only a minor role. © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Dual three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor drives have gained considerable interest in those applications requiring high levels of reliability. However, they often suffer from high-order harmonic currents and mismatch of motor parameters, resulting in degraded performance and reduced efficiency. Therefore, this paper proposes a dual-mode disturbance observer based model predictive current controller. Not only direct current disturbances caused by motor parameters, but also alternating current disturbances caused by high-order harmonic currents are explicitly modeled and estimated to achieve improved model accuracy. In addition, the observer parameter design is given in detail. Furthermore, a generalized predictive current controller with the integration of the proposed observer is developed to provide satisfactory harmonic current suppression capability and parameter robustness simultaneously. Proof of the stability with the proposed controller is given and several experiments and comparisons demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2013 IEEE.

Sharing energy in wider area: A two-layer energy sharing scheme for massive prosumers

The popularization of distributed energy resources transforms end-users from consumers into prosumers. Inspired by the sharing economy principle, energy sharing markets for prosumers are proposed to facilitate the utilization of renewable energy. This paper proposes a novel two-layer energy sharing market for massive prosumers, which can promote social efficiency by wider-area sharing. In this market, there is an upper-layer energy sharing market (U-ESM) in the distribution system and numerous lower-layer energy sharing markets (L-ESMs) in local communities. Prosumers in the same community share energy with each other in the L-ESM, which can be uncleared. The energy surplus and shortage of L-ESMs are cleared in the U-ESM. Thanks to the wider-area two-layer structure, the market outcome is near-social-optimal in large-scale systems. However, the proposed market forms a complex mathematical program with equilibrium constraints (MPEC). To solve the problem, we propose an efficient and hierarchically distributed bidding algorithm. The proposed two-layer market and bidding algorithm are verified on the IEEE 123-bus system with 11,250 prosumers, which demonstrates the practicality and efficiency for large-scale markets. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Broadband Optical Nonlinearities and Ultrafast Carrier Dynamics of GO-CuS Hybrid Film

We report the broadband optical nonlinearities and ultrafast carrier dynamics of GO doped with CuS nanoparticles (GO-CuS) following the femtosecond pulse lasers. Both the pure GO and GO-CuS hybrid films are first synthesized by the vacuum filter deposition method and their optical nonlinearities are then examined in the wide wavelength range (400 nm-1064 nm) based on the femtosecond Z-scan technique. The results reveal that, compared to the pristine GO, the introduction of CuS not only makes the GO-CuS hybrid film switched from saturated absorption to reverse saturated absorption possible, but also achieves strong broadband optical nonlinear absorption responses and optical limiting effects. It is demonstrated that the strongest nonlinear absorption coefficient (∼3.6×10-7 m/W) appears at 400 nm excitation, which is dozens of times larger than that under the illumination of 1064 nm. By leveraging the femtosecond pump-probe technique, we further study the ultrafast carrier dynamics of the GO-CuS hybrid film carrying the fast and slow relaxation processes. Moreover, the physical mechanisms behind these excellent nonlinear optical responses are elucidated. The findings presented here indicate that the GO-CuS hybrid film can be regarded as a potential promising candidate in various ultrafast photonics devices. © 1983-2012 IEEE.

This study explores how humans and cognitive robots with different value systems and motivations understand each other's needs in free-form interactions. We developed a cognitive architecture that links sensing and perception to internal motivation and an intrinsic value system for determining actions. Inspired by young children's needs, this architecture includes three drives: learning, interaction, and recharging, each with varying dependence on the human partner. We aimed to assess how experimentally changing the importance of these drives within a fixed architecture affects interaction dynamics with human partners (acting as caregivers) and their understanding of the robot's needs. By adjusting the learning and interaction drives, we created two robot profiles: Playful, which prioritizes environmental exploration and playfulness to reduce boredom, and Social, which focuses on social interaction through touch and visual contact to increase comfort. Our findings show that changing the importance of these drives produces distinct behaviors and human perceptions. Robot behaviors matched their profiles, and participants adapted their responses accordingly. Participants identified and attributed distinct traits to each robot without knowing the specific profiles. Despite variability among human partners, the robots, especially the playful one, were generally well understood by most participants. © 2025 IEEE. All rights reserved.
