Background segmentation is an important step in analysis of histopathological images. It allows one to remove irrelevant regions and focus on the tissue of interest. However, background segmentation is challenging due to the variability of stain colors and intensity levels across different images, modalities, and magnification levels. In this paper, we present a learning-based model for histopathology background segmentation based on convolutional neural networks. We compare two multiresolution approaches to deal with the variability of magnification in histopathology images: (i) model that uses upscaling of smaller patches of the image, and (ii) model simultaneously trained on multiple resolution levels. Our model is characterized by solid performance both in multiresolution and multistain dyes (H &E and IHC), achieving good performance on publicly available dataset. The quantitative scores are, in terms of the Dice score, close to 94.71. The qualitative analysis presents strong performance on previously unseen cases from different distributions and various dyes. We freely release the model, weights, and ground-truth annotations to promote the open science and reproducible research. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The purpose of a brain-computer interface, also known as a BCI, is to create a communication channel that converts human intention into a control signal for an output device using a brain signal, such as an electroencephalogram (EEG). In addition, artefacts are undesired potentials that helps to process the signals (EEG), with the majority of originate outside signal of the cerebral cortex. Regrettably, they have the ability to alter the form of neurological phenomena that is used to operate a BCI device. They also carry the risk of inadvertently and it can lead to the device which is being controlled in a manner that was not intended. As a result, it is necessary to steer clear of, disregard, or get rid of artefacts in the recordings of brain signals. The origin of artefacts can be traced back to both physiological and non-physiological processes. The different signals are monitored and compared for the better conclusion. © 2023 IEEE.

The document classification (DC) task assigns predefined classes to unlabeled documents using trained models. In the medical field, DC is crucial for tasks like categorizing risk factors and classifying electronic health records. This paper addresses challenges in medical document analysis, such as the prevalence of abbreviations and acronyms. Existing classification performance in medical documents is suboptimal. The paper introduces novel feature engineering methods leveraging domain-specific knowledge to enhance classification performance. Results indicate that the Three-Stage approach surpasses related works, showcasing improved medical document classification performance. © 2024 The Authors.

The increasing pervasiveness of digital infrastructures, also extending into marine domains, makes Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs) an essential tool for the development of novel marine sustainability and monitoring paradigms. Applications in sensitive scenarios may require data encryption, non-repudiation, and provenance tracking. Moreover, the broadcast nature of the underwater acoustic channel makes the task of identifying and authenticating nodes of critical importance. To meet such requirements, we introduce AquaID, a protocol for resource-constrained hardware that leverages Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLTs) and Decentralised Identities. It guarantees confidentiality, authentication, and integrity using low bandwidth and CPU usage, while supporting high scalability and interoperability. We validate our solution in a threefold manner: via embedded board implementation, network simulation, and sea trials using commercially-available acoustic modems and underwater nodes. We also include a cost comparison among possible DLT choices. Results show AquaID to be robust to scaling, achieving low authentication delays and overhead, thus proving suitable even for large deployments. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

In this article, we propose a novel protocol that employs different technologies together, such as Software Defined Network (SDN) for the purpose of offering scalability, programmability, and global network information, and Fog computing for the reason of providing location services that meet V ANET standards. Additionally, we propose a novel cluster head selection algorithm for the purpose of enhancing the efficiency of the protocol by considering three different dimensions, namely, lifetime, average distance, and signal-to-interference noise ratio. The novelty of this proposed algorithm comes from reducing the number of control overheads, reducing long-distance communications, and reducing packet loss due to collisions and contentions inside each cluster, respectively. The proposed protocol has been assessed using N s3 simulator whereas its results are so promising and worth publishing. © 2024 IEEE.

Optical biosensors, a novel invention at the intersection of biotechnology and optics, are revolutionizing the field of biomedical diagnostics. Optical biosensors act by identifying variations in light's wavelength, phase, polarization, or intensity caused by interactions between a sensing element and the target analyte. Optical biosensors outperform other sensor types in sensing applications due to their quick, accurate, and extremely sensitive results. When evaluating optical sensors, total power, core power, efficient area, and indices are the most crucial variables to consider. Recent years have seen notable advancements in machine learning (ML), a branch of artificial intelligence (AI). This review investigates the complementary nature of optical biosensors and machine learning methods. Here, the potential utility of ML for optical biosensors is explored in detail. The advantages and drawbacks of the most popular machine learning methods are listed based on an analysis of the optical biosensing data. It highlights the possible effects of machine learning on improving the sensitivity, selectivity, and adaptability of optical biosensing devices, and it summarizes current advancements in the field. Children's physical, mental and emotional development depends heavily on sleep, with age-specific sleep needs fluctuating. Malnutrition may result from eating too little, absorbing nutrients poorly, being unwell, living in poverty or not knowing enough about nutrition. Food allergies and iron insufficiency are two examples of illnesses whose onsets might differ depending on environmental exposures and genetics. By providing proper diet, getting medical attention when necessary and encouraging healthy behaviors, parents play a crucial role in supporting their children's health. For children to grow and develop properly, they need meals high in fruits, vegetables, milk, protein, calcium, iron and fiber. Key advantages of a balanced diet include aiding bone formation, improving heart health and encouraging regular bowel motions and digestion. In general, children's general health and wellness depend on caregivers being aware of their dietary requirements and giving them the proper attention. The findings of the research imply that machine learning algorithms may be useful in understanding and predicting the prevalence of malnutrition in children. Furthermore, these algorithms could provide perceptive data that might help politicians create effective policies. In this research, we make use of five different machine learning algorithms. With a decision tree, the accuracy is 0.92%, followed by svm which provides 0.91%, KNN, which provides 0.84%, GBM classifier, which provides 0.79% and random forest, which provides 0.65%. © 2025 IEEE.

A deep learning model framework for diabetic retinopathy detection

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the typical diabetic eye issue and a main reason of blindness around the world. As per the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the rates of diabetes would rise to 552 million by 2034. Breakthroughs in computer science techniques inclusive of artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning (DL) have multiplied opportunities for early detection of DR. This indicates that the likelihood of a patient's healing will improve, and the risk of eyesight loss could be minimised in due course. A deep learning model (ResNet) for medical DR detection was examined in this article. The dataset of Asia Pacific Tele-Ophthalmology Society (APTOS) 2019 was used to train and test the DL model. To demonstrate the vitality of the chosen ResNet model, performance measures and testing accuracy like recall, precision, and F1 score were determined. The modified ResNet model attained a testing accuracy of around 84% even with only a few dataset images. Also, training time and computational complexity were reduced with this simpler model. In IEC-61850-based digital substations, the protection IED’s performance is dependent on merging unit’s vendor implementation, communication networks, and measurement circuit’s health conditions. As the process bus Sampled Value(SV) enables the availability of all sensor data on a communication network, this paper proposes a Backup Subscription scheme (BSS) for a transformer differential protection (87T, PDIF) function. BSS utilizes sensor data in digital substations to achieve a flexible protection scheme using a dynamic subscription feature. Thus, in case of failure of one sensor, differential protection would be maintained. The paper presents the implementation and verification of a prototyped scheme using a Hardware-in-the-loop simulation test bed. The main result is that BSS integration into differential protection ensures its dependability and security. Moreover, delay compensation and seamless switching feature increases the availability of differential protection. © The Author(s) 2024.
