We consider that the human intention and feelings conspicuously appear at the force added to a body rather than the positions of hands in the gesture that is nonverbal communication. In this paper, we have tried gesture recognition based on multilayer neural network by using acceleration sensor because the force to act during motion can be detected by acceleration. From the experimental result, we have proven that our gesture recognition method can recognize the gesture patterns such as numerical characters and graphic symbols. As an input device in this study, we used the Wii remote attached to the home gaming console Wii instead of a special device. Furthermore, we have obtained high recognition rate in the case of not only specific performers but also unspecified performers by using the permutation of the simple normalized acceleration for input values of multilayer neural network. Therefore, we could develop versatile gesture recognition engine. © 2010 ISAROB.

This paper proves the uniform continuity of the value function for exit time optimal control problems of hybrid systems with autonomous and controlled transitions. By extending conditions already used for purely continuous systems the paper provides the ground for numerical algorithms for dynamic programming of hybrid systems. Transversality conditions for the continuous dynamics at the guard set boundaries ensure that the continuity property of the value function is not altered by a discrete transition of the hybrid system.

This paper describes the software environment for computer assisted design of three-phase squirrel cage induction machines. The finite element method is used as a computational technique to account for detailed geometrical properties, skew, material nonlinearity and deep-bar effect. The system enables determination of all electromagnetic quantities that are usually of interest of the designers of electrical machines. Besides of that it enables the design optimization. The design of experiment is used as a principal method. Sample results of calculations compared with measurements and sample design optimization are presented.

Drivers' distraction is widely recognized as a leading cause of car accidents. To investigate the distracting effect of dual-tasks involving driving and answering mathematical equations in the stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) conditions, we design five different cases: two cases involving single-tasks and three cases involving dual-tasks. We have found that there is no statistically significant change in the behavioral data among the three dual-tasks. This raises an important question - is there any detectable effect of the dual tasks on the brain waves? To answer this, we use the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) to recognize the changes, if any, in the Electroencephalography (EEG) dynamics associated with such dual-tasks. Our SOM analysis based on independent components corresponding to EEG signals extracted from Frontal and Motor areas revealed that single- and dual-tasks have distinguishable signatures in the EEG signals. Specifically, each of the two single-task conditions is clustered in a distinct spatial area of the map. Two of the dual-tasks also exhibit distinct spatial clusters, while the third case although shows differences from the other two, the neurons corresponding to this case are sub-clustered reflecting the fact that different subjects may give different priorities to the tasks when confronted with two tasks simultaneously. SOM-based exploratory analysis reveals the existence of distinct EEG signatures among the distracting and non-distracting tasks, although there is no any noticeable difference in the behavioral data among these cases. © 2010 IEEE.

Meta-heuristics are efficient techniques for solving large scale optimization problems in which traditional mathematical techniques are impractical or provide sub-optimal solutions. The Shuffled Frog Leaping algorithm (SFLA) is a stochastic iterative method, bio-inspired on the memetic evolution of a group of frogs when seeking for food, which combines the social behavior-based of the particle swarm optimization technique (PSO) and the global information exchange of memetic algorithms. However, the SFLA algorithm suffers on large execution times, being this problem clearly evident when solving complex optimization problems for embedded applications. This drawback can be overcome by exploiting the parallel capabilities of the SFLA. This paper proposes a hardware parallel implementation of the SFLA algorithm (HPSFLA) using FPGAs (Field Programmable gate Arrays) and the efficient floating-point arithmetic. The proposed architecture allows the SFLA to improve the functionality of the algorithm as well as to decrease the execution times by implementing parallel frogs and parallel memeplexes. Three well-known benchmark problems have been used to validate the implemented algorithm and simulation results demonstrate that the HPSFLA speeds-up by factors of 362, 727 and 211 a C-code implementation using an embedded microprocessor for the Sphere, Rastrigin and Rosenbrock benchmarks problems, respectively. Synthesis, simulation and execution time results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed HPSFLA architecture for embedded optimization systems. © 2010 IEEE.

We introduce the Egs mote platform based on the Cortex M3 microcontroller that focuses on medical sensing applications. Egs uses an Atmel SAM3U microcontroller that runs up to 96 MHz and has up to 52 KB of RAM and 256 KB of Flash. Egs combines this microcontroller with two radios (802.15.4 and Bluetooth), external flash, on board sensors, and a LCD touchscreen to enable a rich set of wireless sensing applications.

The purpose of this project is to allow a free movement of Building Management System (BMS) operator in all controlled building area. The current state of the problem consists in an impossibility of operator's movement from control centre. We found a solution in using of mobile devices like PDA with a client of BMS to allow a remote access to all alarms of system. Solution consist in use of web services and web methods interface on BMS server, where is possible to connect a remote PDA client to interchange a requested info about alarms and trends. A web services and mobile client application was created using a Microsoft Visual Studio 2008. Future trends are also discussed to provide a solution for small and mid size constructions in direction of use a Microsoft .NET Micro Framework. © 2010 IEEE.

The work describe the implementation of the prototype solution of the rightly developing system. The system belongs to the group of the tele-medical applications orientated on the e-health sphere of the supplying of the services. This system can considerably help to streamline the work of the nurses. The system is proposed and implemented so that it was simple to extend it. The system contains three basic parts. The desktop application appointed for the projecting, the mobile application for the employees in the terrain on which from the design creates the history and the application for the synchronization. The mobile equipment serves as a task-work in which the employee will tear away the tasks which he has to do and which were in advance schemed by the superior employee. The system will be fully extendable about other required functionalities which relates departmentally with the system.

The purpose of this work is the implementation of the program code that enables digital filtration on aJ-80 embedded JAVA processor. While working the implementation filter we need to provide the fastest calculation with the greatest accuracy. Next, it is almost always necessary for the results to be available after the same time from the sample upload. These matters determine the digital filtration as a problem called RT, which is the problem suitable for testing of the processor aJ-80 and its RT features. The work also describes the chosen task example, which examines RT features of this processor. We also mention the attained results and their evaluation. Based on the evaluation, the performance of the hardware program of the processor aJ-80 is very effective. In this respect, the product is recommended to use in many hard RT areas. © 2010 IEEE.

Business forecasting uses statistic tools more or less sophisticated that relay on the observation values from the past, regarding the activity level, and calculates predictions for the future. The majority of the methods can calculate forecast without any problem and with high accuracy when the data has a satisfying quality. This paper describes our results in implementing the forecast in general and highlights the cases with sporadic data, cases with a high forecasting need, that are common in real life.
