MATLAB provides an effective environment for learning and applying different disciplines. control101 is a new MATLAB toolbox under development which provides tools for interactive learning of control disciplines. This paper presents the framework for teaching discrete control algorithms applied for processes containing large dead times.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Enhanced Wireless Localization: Phase Optimization for Malicious Interference Mitigation

Recently, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have merged as important enabling technologies for localization coverage extension and localization accuracy improvement under signal blockage and malicious interference conditions. However, most existing works assume known locations of jammers, which is generally impractical in real-world networks. To overcome this challenge, we propose a novel RIS-enhanced wireless localization framework against malicious interference with the support of either narrowband or orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) pilot signals. A two-stage anti-jamming localization approach is developed to first estimate the unknown channel and signal information of the jammer and then localize the user’s position by eliminating the jamming signal. More importantly, we utilize the full potential of RIS to improve localization accuracy by optimizing the phase shift profile during the iterative process. Extensive simulation results demonstrate the commendable performance of our proposed framework, which can not only mitigate the jamming effect but also achieve better localization accuracy, offering a good reference for future heterogeneous and complex wireless networks. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) actively translates the brain signals into executable actions by establishing direct communication between the human brain and external devices. Recording brain activity through electroencephalography (EEG) is generally contaminated with both physiological and nonphysiological artifacts, which significantly hinders the BCI performance. Artifact subspace reconstruction (ASR) is a well-known statistical technique that automatically removes artifact components by determining the rejection threshold based on the initial reference EEG segment in multichannel EEG recordings. In real-world applications, the fixed threshold may limit the efficacy of the artifact correction, especially when the quality of the reference data is poor. This study proposes an adaptive online ASR technique by integrating the Hebbian/anti-Hebbian neural networks into the ASR algorithm, namely, principle subspace projection ASR (PSP-ASR) and principal subspace whitening ASR (PSW-ASR) that segmentwise self-organize the artifact subspace by updating the synaptic weights according to the Hebbian and anti-Hebbian learning rules. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is compared to the conventional ASR approaches on benchmark EEG dataset and three BCI frameworks, including steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP), rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP), and motor imagery (MI) by evaluating the root-mean-square error (RMSE), the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the Pearson correlation, and classification accuracy. The results demonstrated that the PSW-ASR algorithm effectively removed the EEG artifacts and retained the activity-specific brain signals compared to the PSP-ASR, standard ASR (Init-ASR), and moving-window ASR (MW-ASR) methods, thereby enhancing the SSVEP, RSVP, and MI BCI performances. We investigate a joint data compression and task scheduling problem for Low Earth Orbit Satellite Networks (LEOSNs), to maximize the sum weights of tasks while simultaneously minimizing the total data loss. First, we propose a novel Multi-Resource Conflict Graph (MRCG) model to characterize the intertwined communication and computation allocation conflicts inherent in typical data offloading processes of LEOSNs. Leveraging the proposed MRCG model, we then formulate the studied problem for LEOSNs as a linear integer program, to maximize the normalized weighted sum of both the sum task weight and the total data loss. We further explore the intrinsic structure of the linear integer program to propose an efficient solution using the Semi-Definite Relaxation (SDR) technique. Finally, the simulation results underscore that the synergistic optimization of data compression and task scheduling significantly facilitates the data offloading efficiency of LEOSNs, and the performances surpass existing benchmarks across a broad range of system parameters. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

Diffuse horizontal irradiance (DHI) forecasts are critical for adopting solar photovoltaic technology. Yet, they can lack reliability given the limited and uncertain meteorological data available for desert areas. This research develops a new sine cosine dipper throated optimization (SCDTO) technique, targeting DHI prediction even given such data constraints. SCDTO uniquely hybridizes sine cosine metaheuristics, adept at exploration, with dipper throat optimization, providing focused exploitation. This hybridization aims to create a robust ensemble model capable of delivering reliable DHI predictions despite climatic uncertainty. The ensemble model, employing various input combinations, was rigorously evaluated across multiple meteorological stations. The SCDTO algorithm exhibited remarkable performance improvements, yielding substantial reductions exceeding 93% in root mean squared error and 98% in mean absolute error at key stations in Morocco, including Tan-Tan, Zagora, Erfoud, and Oujda. Comparative analyses against established optimization algorithms consistently underscored the superior predictive capabilities of SCDTO. Visualizations, including box plots and histograms, demonstrated SCDTO’s efficacy in minimizing prediction errors, particularly for Tan-Tan, Zagora, and Erfoud stations. Also, statistical validation through one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) further affirmed the significance of the proposed SCDTO method. Therefore, this hybrid metaheuristic optimization enables more accurate DHI predictions from limited meteorological data. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

Multilevel inverters (MLI) are gaining wider popularity owing to their increasing power handling capability and improving power quality output. With an inclining trend towards renewable energy utilization, they find a vital application in wind and solar power generation systems. This article proposes a new multilevel dc-ac inverter. The proposed MLI produces a twenty five level output and offers an inherent capacitor self-balancing capability. The inherent self-balancing eliminates the requirement of auxiliary sensor circuit or capacitors voltage balancing algorithms. Dual asymmetric voltage sources and switched capacitors along with their proper charging/discharging pattern are utilized for the generation of output levels. A voltage gain of 2 and a total standing voltage (TSV) of 10 is achieved though the proposed inverter. In order to realize the merit of the proposed MLI over recently developed topologies, a comparative analysis in terms of system components such as numbers of power electronic switches, gate driver circuits, diodes, and capacitors as well as system parameters such as voltage gain, TSV and power loss is presented. The proposed MLI is developed in the laboratory and is controlled through the digital signal processor TMS320F28379D using nearest level control technique. The experimental results are acquired for different loads and under varying modulation index to validate the feasibility of the proposed inverter. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Printed circuit board (PCB) measurement and repair is a challenging task that requires experience and expertise to perform. PCB diagnosis and repair shops employ skilled operators to carry out the corresponding measurement tasks using measuring instruments (e.g., oscilloscopes, multimeters) in order to uncover the condition of a particular product. However, these tasks are often repetitive and meticulous, and additionally, the results need to be collected and carefully documented so that the gathered experience regarding the product can be re-used when the next product of the same type arrives into the shop. Nevertheless, the diagnosis of used PCBs is less researched and current flexible automation possibilities are limited. In this paper, a novel visual servoing probe test method and measurement tool are proposed to provide a flexible solution for PCB diagnosis with a higher level of automation. The aim of the approach is to reduce the burden on the operators by carrying out the repetitive measurement tasks and automatically storing the results while leaving the responsibility of measurement profile setup to the human expert. The proposed visual servo system uses manually teached-in measurement points, where template patterns are recorded using cameras, and it is capable of compensating positioning errors in the range of a couple of millimeters. The proof of concept of the proposed method is presented through motherboard measuring experiments, with a 99.7% success rate.

The popularity of vehicles based on electricity is increasing as they are considered a sustainable mode of transportation. The charging infrastructure for electric vehicles are suffering various issues. There are limited availability of public charging stations, the high costs associated with installing private charging stations, and the high variability of electricity prices. The peer-to-peer (P2P) energy stability will be seen as a potential solution to facilitate electric vehicle (EV) charging in a manner that is both cost-effective and environmentally sustainable. The paper presents a novel system energy trading and charging payment for electric vehicles (EVs). The desired system enables EV owners to exchange surplus electricity with other EV owners in their location. The system being proposed utilizes blockchain technology to guarantee secure and transparent transactions. Additionally, it incorporates a smart contract to automate the trading and charging process. The system utilizes a dynamic pricing mechanism that adjusts in real-time to reflect the current electricity prices. This feature is designed to encourage electric vehicle owners to engage in energy stabilization during maximum usage hours. The Optimistic results shows that the described system has the efficacy on minimising the cost of vehicle charging and to decrease peak demand on the grid. Additionally, the system encourages the utilization of renewable energy sources. © 2023 IEEE.

Evolution of agents’ dynamics of multiagent systems under consensus protocol in the face of jamming attacks is discussed, where centralized parties are able to influence the control signals of the agents. In this paper we focus on a game-theoretical approach of multiagent systems where the players have incomplete information on their opponents’ strength. We consider repeated games with both simultaneous and sequential player actions where players update their beliefs of each other over time. The effect of the players’ optimal strategies according to Bayesian Nash Equilibrium and Perfect Bayesian Equilibrium on agents’ consensus is examined. It is shown that an attacker with incomplete knowledge may fail to prevent consensus despite having sufficient resources to do so.
