Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm in Non-Markovian Quantum Systems

Although quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA) has demonstrated its quantum supremacy, its performance on Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) devices would be influenced by complicated noises, e.g., quantum colored noises. To evaluate the performance of QAOA under these noises, this paper presents a framework for running QAOA on non-Markovian quantum systems which are represented by an augmented system model. In this model, a non-Markovian environment carrying quantum colored noises is modelled as an ancillary system driven by quantum white noises which is directly coupled to the corresponding principal system;i.e., the computational unit for the algorithm. With this model, we mathematically formulate QAOA as piecewise Hamiltonian control of the augmented system, where we also optimize the control depth to fit into the circuit depth of current quantum devices. For efficient simulation of QAOA in non-Markovian quantum systems, a boosted algorithm using quantum trajectory is further presented. Finally, we show that non-Markovianity can be utilized as a quantum resource to achieve a relatively good performance of QAOA, which is characterized by our proposed exploration rate. C-type lectins (CTLs) are a family of carbohydrate-binding proteins and an important component of mosquito saliva. Although CTLs play key roles in immune activation and viral pathogenesis, little is known about their role in regulating dengue virus (DENV) infection and transmission. In this study, we established a homozygous CTL16 knockout Aedes aegypti mutant line using CRISPR/Cas9 to study the interaction between CTL16 and viruses in mosquito vectors. Furthermore, mouse experiments were conducted to confirm the transmission of DENV by CTL16^−/− A. aegypti mutants. We found that CTL16 was mainly expressed in the medial lobe of the salivary glands (SGs) in female A. aegypti. CTL16 knockout increased DENV replication and accumulation in the SGs of female A. aegypti, suggesting that CTL16 plays an important role in DENV transmission. We also found a reduced expression of immunodeficiency and Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription pathway components correlated with increased DENV viral titer, infection rate, and transmission efficiency in the CTL16 mutant strain. The findings of this study provide insights not only for guiding future investigations on the influence of CTLs on immune responses in mosquitoes but also for developing novel mutants that can be used as vector control tools. © The Author(s) 2024.

This research revealed the irradiation hardening mechanism in two novel NbZrTiV and VNbMoTaWTi refractory high entropy alloys (RHEAs). The RHEA samples were irradiated by a dual beam of 0.5 MeV protons and 2 MeV He ions at 300 K. Irradiation-induced defect clusters and irradiation hardening were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and nanoindenter, respectively. It was discovered that the defect clusters were mostly consisted of nano-sized dislocation loops and helium bubbles. The effect of compositional complexity and heterogeneity on defect cluster distribution in the RHEAs was discussed. The yield strength and hardness increments induced by irradiation were calculated by dispersed barrier hardening (DBH) model. The hardness of the entire irradiated layer was estimated according to the volume fraction of the plateau and peak region in hemispherical plasticity affected zone (PAZ). Additionally, nanoindentation was used to assess how bubbles and dislocation loops affected hardening. The actual hardness of the irradiation layer was extracted for nanoindentation hardness using the Kasada method. After that, the DBH-calculated hardness and the measured hardness of the irradiated NbZrTiV and VNbMoTaWTi were compared. The results show that the DBH hardness increments match well with those measured by nanoindentation. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Humans have the ability to deviate from their natural behavior when necessary, which is a cognitive process called response inhibition. Similar approaches have independently received increasing attention in recent years for ensuring the safety of control. Realized using control barrier functions or predictive safety filters, these approaches can effectively ensure the satisfaction of state constraints through an online adaptation of nominal control laws, e.g., obtained through reinforcement learning. While the focus of these realizations of inhibitory control has been on risk-neutral formulations, human studies have shown a tight link between response inhibition and risk attitude. Inspired by this insight, we propose a flexible, risk-sensitive method for inhibitory control. Our method is based on a risk-aware condition for value functions, which guarantees the satisfaction of state constraints. We propose a method for learning these value functions using common techniques from reinforcement learning and derive sufficient conditions for its success. By enforcing the derived safety conditions online using the learned value function, risk-sensitive inhibitory control is effectively achieved. The effectiveness of the developed control scheme is demonstrated in simulations. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Gravitational waves from equatorially eccentric extreme mass ratio inspirals around swirling Kerr black holes

We have studied the gravitational wave generated by extreme mass ratio inspirals (EMRIs) along eccentric orbits on equatorial plane within the frame of the swirling-Kerr black hole spacetime. The swirling-Kerr black hole has an extra swirling parameter, which characterizes the rotation of universe background. Our findings indicate that this swirling parameter leads to a delay phase shift in the gravitational waveforms. The impact of the swirling parameter on EMRI gravitational waves is suppressed by the black hole’s spin parameter. As a result, extracting information about the swirling parameter from gravitational waves in a static black hole spacetime is much easier than in the case of a rapidly rotating black hole. Our analysis also shows that a high black hole spin leads to a greater overlap of gravitational waveforms for different swirling parameters. We further investigate the potential issue of waveform confusion caused by the orbital eccentricity and semi-latus rectum parameters. As the swirling parameter increases, the relative variation in eccentricity also increases, while the variation in the semi-latus rectum decreases rapidly. The trends in these changes with the swirling parameter resemble those observed with the MOG (Modified Gravity) parameter, though with different rates of change. These results provide deeper insights into the properties of EMRI gravitational waves and the swirling of the universe background. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Catching flying objects with a cushioning process is a skill commonly performed by humans, yet it remains a significant challenge for robots. In this paper, we present a framework that combines optimization and learning to achieve compliant catching on mobile manipulators (CCMM). First, we propose a high-level capture planner for mobile manipulators (MM) that calculates the optimal capture point and joint configuration. Next, the pre-catching (PRC) planner ensures the robot reaches the target joint configuration as quickly as possible. To learn compliant catching strategies, we propose a network that leverages the strengths of LSTM for capturing temporal dependencies and positional encoding for spatial context (P-LSTM). This network is designed to effectively learn compliant strategies from human demonstrations. Following this, the post-catching (POC) planner tracks the compliant sequence output by the P-LSTM while avoiding potential collisions due to structural differences between humans and robots. We validate the CCMM framework through both simulated and real-world ball-catching scenarios, achieving a success rate of 98.70% in simulation, 92.59% in real-world tests, and a 28.7% reduction in impact torques. We investigate the radiative efficiency and jet power in the spacetime of a rotating black hole within the framework of loop quantum gravity (LQG), which includes an additional LQG parameter. The results show that as the LQG parameter increases, the radiative efficiency decreases for slowly rotating black holes while it increases for rapidly rotating black holes. Furthermore, the jet power is found to increase for different black hole spins. With the observed data from the well-known sources A0620-00, H1743-322, XTE J1550-564, GRS1124-683, GRO J1655-40, and GRS1915+105, we make some constraints on the black hole spin parameter and the LQG parameter. The presence of the LQG parameter broadens the allowed range of the black hole spin parameter for sources A0620-00, H1743-322, XTE J1550-564 and GRO J1655-40. However, for the source GRS 1915+105, there is no overlap between the allowed parameter regions, which implies that the rotating LQG black hole cannot simultaneously account for the observed jet power and the radiative efficiency as in other black hole spacetimes. Wheat is one of the most important cereal crops and a critical ingredient in a wide range of ready-to-eat products, such as bread, noodles, cakes, and snacks, due to its favorable sensory attributes and processing properties. Extrusion, a process commonly used in the food industry, has proven effective in enhancing the nutritional value and functionality of wheat-based products by precisely controlling processing parameters. In this review, we explore the effects that extrusion process parameters have on the structural, functional, and physicochemical properties (e.g., expansion ratio, water absorption index, water solubility index, texture, viscosity, and digestibility) of wheat-based products. We also discuss specific applications of extruded wheat products. The findings of this review highlight how including an extrusion process can improve product quality and advance wheat-based product development in the food industry. © 2025 KeAi Communications Co., Ltd

This study investigated a new approach for synthesizing Bacillus subtilis biofilm-supported Mn–Ce/zeolite catalysts for the degradation of gaseous toluene. Four different metal oxide nano-catalysts (ZMn, ZMnCe-10%, ZMnCe-20%, and ZMnCe-30%) were synthesized with varying ratios of manganese (Mn) and cerium (Ce) on zeolite nanoparticles. TEM, SEM, XRD, BET, XPS, and EDX mapping were used to examine these four samples, as well as simple zeolite. Based on these analyses, the catalytic activity of the prepared samples ZMn, ZMnCe-10%, ZMnCe-20%, and ZMnCe-30% for the complete oxidation of toluene and toluene intermediate products were tested with Non-thermal plasma (NTP) technology in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor. Among all, ZMnCe-20% showed the highest toluene degradation efficiency (89%) at low concentrations (200 ppm) and humidity (>50%). Later, highly efficient and hydrophobic nano-biocatalysts were prepared by combining B. subtilis biofilm wild-type (WT) and engineered B. subtilis biofilm EPS with ZMnCe-20% catalyst. EPS is the main component found in biofilm matrix and plays a key role in influencing properties such as biofilm stability, electron transfer, surface roughness and hydrophobicity. Compared to WT B. subtilis biofilm, EPS overexpressed B. subtilis biofilm showed stronger growth and development on ZMnCe-20% nanocatalyst. Moreover, the NTP system packed with ZMnCe-20%/biofilm (EPS+) nano-biocatalyst exhibited the highest toluene degradation activity (99%) with (83%) CO₂ selectivity, (up to 50%) reduction in NOx concentration and complete ozone decomposition at (250 ppm) toluene concentrations and increased humidity (>90%). High-energy electrons generated in the NTP system break the C–H and C–C bond between the rings of the toluene molecule, forming several byproducts which are later reacted with active radical species such as O[rad], OH[rad], and O₃ and further converted into final degradation products (CO₂
