This paper describes the implementation of a recently developed sliding mode control allocation scheme, evaluated in a scenario involving the loss of all control surfaces (due to a failure of the hydraulics system), on a 6-DOF motion flight simulator called SIMONA. Tested on a realistic manoeuvre involving an emergency return to a near landing condition on a runway (in response to the failure), the SIMONA results show that, not only does the controller provide high tracking performance during nominal fault-free conditions, this performance is also maintained after the total loss of all control surfaces. This shows the capability of the proposed sliding mode control allocation scheme to achieve and maintain desired performance levels using only propulsion. This paper proposes the design and analysis of repetitive control technique for tracking the output current of active filter. The proportional plus integral (PI) controller performs a feedback control task and the repetitive control law periodically adjusts the input command to the control system to achieve a desired trajectory. In this work, the repetitive control law is designed using optimization in the frequency domain. The method of finding minimum gains for the optimization cost function is also presented in this paper. Simulation results confirm here the performance of the proposed method.

This paper introduces a use of iterative learning control to improve a performance of arm robot in repeatable task. Iterative learning control aims to converge the repeating distance error produced from arm robot by adjusting the control input in the current run to feedback control system based on error observed from the previous run. The feedback signal to the system is experimentally obtained from the two hardware devices: encoder and Webcam. Performance of robot using the two types of feedback signal is discussed in detail. Simple learning control law is first applied to the system and a more complicated control law designed from optimization in the similar field is later used.

We proposed an algorithm for filtering unusual GPS data from multiple GPS-equipped cars. The GPS data was periodically transmitted to a base station via a radio link every 3 minutes and 10 seconds by 3000-4000 taxis around Bangkok and suburb. We manually analyzed the data and mark the data that seems irregular. From our analysis of the data, there are four main problems affect the accuracy of traffic estimation system: (1) Taxi driver drives round one place for a long time, (2) Taxi waiting for passengers, (3) The direction of a car does not flow along the direction of the street, (4) The measurement error of the GPS receivers. If these invalid data is filtered out before using it to estimate traffic congestion, the system will be more consistent and accurate. We used the coefficient of variations (C.V.) as a performance indicator, because invalid data is the cause of data inconsistency. From the experiment, our proposed algorithm could reduce the C.V. from 0.9179 to 0.8184.

We present a portable system that detects bad driving behaviors of a bus using a 2-axis accelerometer. The system can identify four driving events: take off, brake, turn left, and turn right using a rule-based method. Then, the system gives scores to the behaviors detected by fuzzy logic rules. The system verification is done by 11 volunteers who keep track of driving events and scores according to their feeling. The scores from three volunteer are averaged and compared with that from the system. The results indicate an accuracy of 88.04% for taking off events, 87.21% for brake, 88.84% for turning right, and 84.36% for turning left.

Although a wide range of control algorithms are available, PID controllers are still the most widely used type. Even control engineers who have a good knowledge of advanced control algorithms prefer PID controllers when they are asked to design the control circuit for a new device. This is because of their price and because of the simplicity and reliability of the control algorithm. The PID control algorithm enables anyone with a basic knowledge of mathematics to gain some idea of what happens inside the controller during the control process, how the manipulated value is computed and its dependence on the control error. The main disadvantage of standard PID type controllers is the absence of autotuning features. Implementation of such controllers requires time-consuming tuning, and very often the presence of expensive experts. Therefore, there is quite strong pressure to equip new PID controllers with simple autotuners. Recently, tuners based on relay experiments have become popular. However, the use of autotuners of this kind requires the control process to be stopped temporarily during the relay experiment. For these reasons, even controllers equipped with these autotuning facilities are used without any tuning, sometimes even with the factory presetting. This unsatisfactory situation has motivated us to develop a new frequency response based autotuning algorithm that does not use any model of the controlled plant and enables the controller parameters to be changed without the necessity to break the control process.

The purpose of this study was to validate a single BIA for predicting the risk in DHF in dengue patients in the Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM). The BIA technique based on the passing of low-amplitude electrical current less than 1 mA (500 to 800μA) with frequency 50kHz. During hospitalization, 210 patients who are 119 males and 91 females serologically confirmed DF and DHF patients were tested using single BIA. By using multiple regression analysis, race, reactance, complication, headache and the day of fever were found independent determinants of predicting the risk. Hence, this novel approach of BIA technique can provide rapid, non-invasive, and promising method for classifying and evaluating the status of the DHF patients.

This paper presents object detection and modeling algorithm for automatic visual people counting system to identify individuals from top view images acquired from an overhead surveillance camera. This work proposes Snake algorithm with effective external energy function and a half-circle template initialization for modeling passengers. The experiment result showed that the proposed method could fit the Snake to the head and shoulder boundaries of the passengers effectively. Fitting error of 3.76 pixels per control point was obtained in our experiment. The information is not only useful for verifying humans but also for extracting appearance features to enhance performance of the subsequent tracking algorithm.

Improving the FES-assisted indoor rowing exercise (FES-rowing) performance enables the spinal cord injury (SCI) people to perform hybrid FES-exercise in a higher level of intensity. High level of exercise volume and intensity can play a big role in prevention of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity which is a significant threat to the health of people with chronic SCI. FES-rowing can be enhanced to achieved the high level exercise through the arrangement of the rowing ergometer. In this paper, the performance of FES-rowing using an adjustable inclined rowing ergometer is investigated. Two different methods to enhance the FES-rowing performance using inclined ergometer are implemented. A model of the adjustable inclined ergometer and humanoid are developed using the Visual Nastran (vN4D) software environment and validated by the experimental work. Fuzzy logic control is implemented to control the knee and elbow trajectories for smooth rowing manoeuvre. The generated level of electrical stimulations for activation of quadriceps and hamstrings muscles are recorded and analysed. The FES-rowing efficiency for both methods have been defined and illustrated. The results show the inclined ergometer with upper body effort is the best performance in enhancing the FES-rowing.

Printed Circuit Board Assembly (PCBA) quality inspection is an essential stage in PCBA manufacturing. In this paper, we focus on development of efficient template matching algorithms used in Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) for PCBA quality inspection in post-reflow process. In our work, a pre-computed set of Normalized Cross Correlation (NCC) scores from rotated templates to the original template are used to eliminate unnecessary calculation and to estimate rotation angles of scene object images. Two models called multiple band and piecewise linear are implemented and compared to find suitable rotation angles of candidate locations. Since the technique follows traditional systematic window sliding, existing efficient implementation techniques of template matching can be directly applied. Unlike other rotation invariant methods, accurate rotation angles can be directly obtained from the technique. Experimental results show excellent performance for PCBA quality inspection applications.
