The Use of Spring-Orthosis to Enhance Performance of FES-assisted Indoor Rowing Exercise (FAIRE)

Abstract This paper describes a new technique in assisting indoor rowing exercise for paraplegics. It combines functional electrical stimulation with an energy storage element. A spring is introduced as an energy storage element that stores energy during the driving phase and transfers energy during recovery phase of rowing stroke. The technique is implemented with a dynamic simulation model. Fuzzy logic control is used to control the knee and elbow trajectories for smooth rowing manoeuvre. The generated level of electrical stimulation for activation of quadriceps and hamstrings muscles are recorded and analysed. In view of good results obtained, it is concluded that the new technique of rowing exercise for paraplegics using spring orthosis with proper rowing manoeuvre significantly contributes to assisting paraplegic indoor rowing exercise.

Estimation of Passive Stiffness and Viscosity in Paraplegic: A Dynamic Leg Model in Visual Nastran

Abstract This paper presents investigations into pendulum test to measure passive knee motion from a paraplegic subject. The test is used to evaluate changes in the knee angular displacement, passive stiffness and viscosity. Then, genetic algorithm (GA) parameter optimization is used with Visual Nastran (Vn4D) to find passive stiffness and viscosity values for modelling the paraplegic leg. The best performance of the Vn4D leg model is achieved with the optimum values of the viscosity and the stiffness equal to 0.0031055 Nms/deg and 0.024244 Nm/deg respectively. The model was found to be the best Vn4D model with actual subject's leg properties to represent paraplegic leg model.

Their real time-requirements are different and experimentally proven. The better method is described in detail to make it possible to implement it in any environment or programming language.

The objective of our work is to provide industrial communication based on IP networks with an increased level of determinism and reliability compared to the office IP networks. Our approach is based on the established methods of quality of service used in telecommunication networks and verification of our approach by both empirical and analytical means. In this paper, we propose an extension of network calculus in form of rate-variable-latency (RVL) service curve which is capable of modelling of step changes of latency during data congestions caused by flow aggregation. Furthermore, we introduce several properties of the RVL service curve. Finally, we provide a comparison of the outgoing port congestion simulation using the RVL service curve and our empirical measurements.

This paper represents an emulation of fuzzy logic control schemes in autonomous parallel parking system in a backward maneuver. There are four infrared sensors sending distance data to microcontroller for generating an obstacle-free parking path. Two of them mounted on the front and rare wheels on the parking side are used as the inputs to the fuzzy rules to calculate a proper steering angle while backing. The other two attached to the front and rear ends serve for avoiding collision with other cars along the parking space. At the end of parking process, the vehicle will be in line with other parked cars and position in the middle of the free space. A construction of fuzzy rules is designed based upon a wall following process. The effectiveness of the controller design is demonstrated in the experimental results.

In recent years, the increase of non-linear loads in electrical power system has sparked the research in power quality issue. The shunt active power filter (SAPF) is a power electronic device which has been developed to improve power quality. The current control of shunt power filters is critical since poor control can reinforce existing harmonic problems. Various control strategies have been proposed by many researchers. In this paper, a comparative evaluation of the performance of two current control techniques, resonant and predictive controller, is presented with identical system specification. The design procedure and principle of both current control methods are also presented in detail. Simulation results show the comparison of transient response, steady state control and performance in the presence of variation of supply impedance between two control techniques.

Paper shows direct connection and implementation way of designed control schémas of prepared applications to an industrial WinPLC. Paper deals with industrial realization of feedback control of demanding applications on their control, control algorithms and visualization together with design, implementation and real time control from MATLAB/Simulink Environment. Described is a way to produce a permanent solution in control applications that are fully prepared, designed and implemented directly from MATLAB/Simulink to the target control platform. As a part, the mentioned solution is using a multiplatform control system REX as a bridge between MATLAB and target platforms. These methods allow minimizing costs of development of control of applications, because it produces target permanent realizations in comparison to classical development methods that usually need expensive real time measurement cards and produce only one purpose development solution. As next benefit the application is created for visualization the data from RT database during the measurement and control process. This last benefit produce an interesting data from real control process to give a next reason to use of WinCon solution.

Because of rapidly increasing demand for high capacity communication services compact antennas have become center of research interest nowadays and this reduction of size becomes much more important especially when we want to use the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology; to increase channel capacity, in modern compact devices. Microstrip antennas are an attractive option due to low cost, and small size. However to fulfill need for more compact and miniaturized devices; a dual feed dual element planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) at 2.45GHz has been proposed on a very small PCB (60 mm × 20 mm × 0.8 mm), to be used for ISM 2.45 GHz band. While total volume occupied by two antennas is 10 mm × 20 mm × 2.5 mm. -10 dB return loss or VSWR=2 criterion for required bandwidth has been satisfied, only with help of designing a novel radiation structure. To miniaturize size of PIFA a novel T-shaped slot has been employed in radiation structure. Overall size is compact than small MIMO antennas, available in open literature. As the proposed design is suitable for different feeding environments, it can be used in different small size PCB devices, for different applications. Results show satisfactory bandwidth, and omnidirectional radiation pattern.

Single frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is an inexpensive, quick and painless means of estimating body composition. In this paper, BIA parameters employed for predicting hemoglobin (Hb) in dengue patients. The BIA technique passes a low-amplitude electrical current, in the range of 500 muA to 800 muA, at a single frequency of 50 kHz. BIA data was sampled from 210 (comprises of 119 males and 91 females) serologically confirmed dengue fever (DF) and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) patients, hospitalized at the Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM). After applying multiple regression analysis, it was found out that risk, number of day, anorexia, blood tendency and ERBO were found to be significant independent determinants of predicting the grading stages on DHF.
