Two novel linear matrix inequality (LMI) based procedures to receive a stabilizing robust output feedback gain are presented, one of them being a modification of previous results of OLIVEIRA et al., [5]. The proposed robust control law stabilizes the respective uncertain discrete-time system described by a polytopic model with guaranteed cost. The obtained results are compared with other LMI results from literature and illustrated on an example.

Orpheus mobile robot is a teleoperated device primarily designed for remote exploration of hazardous places and rescue missions. The robot is able to operate both indoors and outdoors, is made to be durable and reliable. It is small enough to pass through standard doors - is less than 60cms wide. The robot is remotely operated with help of visual telepresence. The device is controlled through advanced user interface with joystick and head mounted display with inertial head movement sensor. The functionality and reliability of the system was tested on Robocup Rescue League 2003 world championship in Italy where our team placed on 1 st place.

The paper deals with the problems of securing safely the data transmitted via the systems for the control of railway transport. What is intended is to summarize both the threats and the defence reactions, especially those occurring in open transmission systems. The possibility of using channel coding techniques and cryptography mechanisms is analyzed, following the Standard EN 50159. Finally, the mathematical probability theorems are applied to the determination of undetected errors in channel decoders and in ciphering/deciphering techniques.

This work describes an attempt to develop a real-life application for transforming the appearance of a person's face to give a more favorable impression. Face images are first represented as high-dimensional vectors by separating the shape and texture information, and variations in the appearance of face images are coded by applying principal component analysis to a set of various face images. The relationship between the coded representation and the impression of corresponding images is analyzed, and an impression transfer vector is defined by the Fisher's linear discriminant obtained from a number of training images previously categorized into two opposing classes for a given impression dimension. An image manipulation method for transforming impressions is proposed which shifts the projection of the input image in the parameter space by an arbitrary magnitude of the impression transfer vector. Experimental results for impression transformations of both age and gender dimensions showed that the method proposed for face image manipulation is an effective one.

Most people report finding it difficult to recognize the faces of people of other races, a phenomenon known as other-race effect, in face perception. If this tendency is also shown by automatic face identification systems, it might pose a type of racial problem for systems that are being widely introduced to security applications on a global scale, such as use for passport control at international airports. Armed with an awareness of this potential problem faced by biometric authentication systems, we investigated whether two major classical schemes for image representation in face recognition, i.e. Eigenface and GaborJet, show different racial effects in terms of verification error on alien subjects. Results indicate that, contrary to general understanding, Eigenface may outperform GaborJet when faces could be either Japanese or non-Japanese.

Modeling and parameter identification are important prerequisites for state estimation and control of complex biological systems in bioengineering. Due to the great variety of cell lines and the rapidity of developments in genetics, biosystems have to be investigated in a fast and efficient way to identify the major metabolic phenomena. This paper proposes a systematic modeling procedure, which enables the description of the most important experimental settings and biological effects in terms of stoichiometry, kinetics and metabolic regulation. This procedure is successfully applied to the real case of a perfused mammalian cell culture of non-transfected CHO-K1 cells in suspension.

In this paper, we discuss the relational algebra and recursive relationships between binary and ternary relationships in entity-relationship modeling. We define the interpretation of the recursive tables that can be applied to the complicated relationships having the same participating entities. We propose a new approach to modeling that is suitable for representing self-similar objects and for creating hierarchical structures. It combines methods of the set theory for the recursive relations within a single modeling paradigm, allowing users to define self-similar, partially self-similar, or hierarchical systems in a consistent and flexible manner. The use of recursive relationships in the definitions of self-similar objects yields representations that can be rendered at varying levels of detail or precision at run time.

This paper presents a new method to solve the constrained unit commitment problem by applying ant colony optimization (ACO) based on the diversity control approach. The pheromone updating rule is modified to control the diversification by adopting a simple mechanism for random selection in ACO. The proposed method is tested on the 10-unit test system with a scheduling time horizon of 24 hours. The numerical results show an economical saving in the total operating cost when compared to the previous literature results. Moreover, two types of the proposed diversity control technique have the features of easy implementation and a better convergence rate superior to a standard ACO.
