An analysis of the control characteristics of a switched reluctance motor drive is performed taking into account the saturation of the magnetic circuit of the motor. The drive operation is described, the control variables and the related ranges are identified, the relationships between the average torque and such variables are calculated, and the torque capability is found. A method for the manipulator position control was previously proposed by K. Tsutsumi et al. (1987) on the basis of the Hopfield scheme for neural computation. According to the proposed method, the manipulator is modeled not by using polar coordinates but by using the distances between the joint locations alone. The analog neural network realises parallel control by minimizing the total of the energy functions based on the distances, and it can easily treat not only the ordinary manipulator with rigid links but also the elastic arm. The proposed control method with parallelism and flexibility is applied to a two-dimensional truss structure composed of elastic members. Simulation demonstrates that the configuration of the structure can be controlled by adjusting the initial configuration and by tuning the energy balance.< >

Batch-type process control with heuristic method is studied. The controlsystem for vulcanized fibre production process on a 16-bits microcomputer is developed. ZnCl 2 diffusion control in fibre sheets is estimated by on-process numerical calculations of FDM. The ovarall diffusion coefficient is measured by the com bination of a series of experiments and corresponding numerical calculations. Mixing control of the solutions to get required con centration is performed by suggesting applicable combination to be chosen by the operator. This system can reduce a half of process time.

This paper presents a new approach to the design of an optimal servo-type controller for a supercritical once-through steam generator under variable pressure operation. To derive a state-space model of the thermal power plant, a linear multivariable input-output model is fitted to the open loop data obtained from the actual plant. The applicability of state-space models obtained are checked on the basis of the real step response characteristics of the plant. Under the assumption that the time-varying desired demands are previewable, a new controller with state feedback plus integral and preview actions is developed by extending the method due to Tomizuka and Rosenthal(1979). It is shown by digital simulation that the preview of future demands is effective for improving the performance of the plant.

A ship design methodology is presented for developing hull forms that attain improved performance in both seakeeping and resistance. Contrary to traditional practice, the methodology starts with developing a seakeeping-optimized hull form without making concessions to other performance considerations, such as resistance. The seakeeping-optimized hull is then modified to improve other performance characteristics without degrading the seakeeping. Presented is a point-design example produced by this methodology. Merits of the methodology and the point design are assessed on the basis of theoretical calculations and model experiments. This methodology is an integral part of the Hull Form Design system (HFDS) being developed for computer-supported naval ship design. The modularized character of HFDS and its application to hull form development are discussed.

In recent years, the quality control of sintered ore has become more and more important for stable operation of modern blast furnaces where the sinter ratio of feedstock material exceeds 50%. The quality controlsystem of sintering plant has been developed by SMI (Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd.), which consists of the measurement systems of free carbon and FeO content in raw materials, the controlsystem of particle distribution of crushed coke and the FeO content in sintered ore. It's well known that the conventional batch sampling method has such limitations for quality control of sintered ore as its poor sampling frequency and time lag before result is acquired. In the past several years, SMI has developed the sensors and controlsystem of sintered ore with satisfactory results. Our research in those several years, the following results are attained. (1) There is close relation between indices of ROI (Reduction and Disintegration Index) and TI (Tumbler Index) of sintered products and the ratio of smaller particle size of crushed coke than 1 mm. (2) FeO content of products is controllable by regulating the coke ratio in relation to the FeD content of raw materials and products. (3) FeO content can be controlled more accurately by regulating the coke ratio in which the effect of free carbon content of raw materials is corrected. From those facts, the following measurement systems are developed. (1) Continuous FeO measurement meter for raw materials ----- The principle of FeD measurement meter consists in inductance change of detecting coil by the FeD content of raw materials. (2) Continuous FeO measurement meter for sintered products. (3) Particle distribution measurement system of crushed coke ----- This system uses an optical pattern recognition method. This paper provides a context within which the role of human factors engineering (HFE) for Naval ship design may be understood. HFE is defined and its history as part of engineering design teams is traced. The role of HFE in ship systems design is defined, and the HFE Technology for Ships Program, managed by SEA 061R, is described. The rationale for inclusion of HFE in the design process is presented, the methodology whereby it is incorporated into the design process is detailed, methodology to assess the application of HFE is outlined, and the benefits that will accrue as a result of inclusion of HFE considerations in the design process are documented. The counterpoint to inclusion is illustrated through instances of design-induced human errors. A specific application of HFE in the acquisition process is illustrated through use of the Landing Craft, Air Cushion HFE program plan. The difficulties which may be encountered as the size of the target system expands are described. Potential roadblocks to the required incorporation of HFE are examined for their source and possible ameliorative steps.

A new adaptive computer control model in hot strip rolling has been developed. The main idea is to improve the accuracy of the force calculation and to balance the inter-stands load distribution by introducing a new adaptive systems based on the gradient technique and a stochastic approximation-type algorithm. The feasibility of the new method is demonstrated by off-line simulations using actual rolling data. The comparison of the new method with the conventional method shows that the accuracy of the force calculation can be remarkably improved, especially in down-stream stands where the reduction in draft is rather small, and that the inter-stands load distribution can be well balanced.
