In this research, a high-altitude, compact and rapidly deployable, air-launched, inflatablewinged aircraft is designed, developed, and flight-tested to investigate the flight characteristics of inflatable-winged aircraft as well as the in-flight inflation and dynamic deployment properties when launched from various carriers. To start with, two types of inflatable wings employing different materials have been designed, fabricated, and tested, the tests including structural characteristics tests, inflation properties tests, and low-Reynolds-number wind-tunnel tests. A full-scale 30-kilogram prototype unmanned aerial vehicle with inflatable wings was then designed, assembled and tested with some basic low-altitude flights to verify the feasibility of the aerodynamic layout and the trim and stability and control characteristics. Finally, low- and high-altitude in-flight launches will be conducted to study the dynamic deployment properties and high-altitude flight characteristics of this design. © 2025, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. The hybrid electric powertrains can utilize bidirectional buck converters to charge the battery while driving and discharge it when extra power is required. In order to increase the power density, the wide-bandgap switches should be used. These switches have bidirectional conductivity mode as they are metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFET) and the utilization of the freewheeling diode is undesirable due to high voltage drop across it and much higher losses in conducting mode. This paper proposes the combined control strategy which implements continuous conducting mode at high and active discontinuous conducting mode at low currents. The use of model predictive control allows to minimize the conducting losses by means of reverse conductivity mode of the switches. The paper provides derivation of the combined control strategy. Then, the simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method. Finally, the simulation was performed with various errors in the definition of the system parameters.

Optimal intelligent fuzzy TID controller for an uncertain level process with actuator and system faults: Population-based metaheuristic approach

For the Conical Tow-Tank Non-Interacting Level (CTTNL) prototype system, this article discusses the design of an unique optimal fractional order TID controller employing a type-1 fuzzy set. To generate a linearized model transfer function for the nonlinear CTTNL process, local linearization around the equilibrium state was performed. This work compares the performance of a fuzzy tilted-integral-derivative (FTID) controller for the CTTNL system to a traditional proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controller. The parameters of the FTID controller were optimized using the Chicken Search Optimization (CSO) algorithm in this study, and those values were used to create a PID controller. Thereafter, the FTID and PID controllers’ performance is compared. The investigation shows that the FTID controller beats the PID controller in terms of IAE, ISE, ITAE, and ITSE integral errors. The suggested controller's fault-tolerant performance was also assessed using the fault recovery time (F_rt) parameter. The FTID controller outperforms traditional PID controllers in terms of transient and steady-state performance. The fault tolerance capabilities of the FTID controller will be tested on the CTTNL system in the future, using additive and multiplicative failures. Further research will include a comprehensive examination of robustness in the context of model parameter uncertainties. © 2023 The Author(s)

Data poisoning attacks, where adversaries manipulate training data to degrade model performance, are an emerging threat as machine learning becomes widely deployed in sensitive applications. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of data poisoning including attack techniques, adversary incentives, impacts on security and reliability, detection methods, defenses, and key research gaps. We examine label flipping, instance injection, backdoors, and other attack categories that enable malicious outcomes ranging from IP theft to accidents in autonomous systems. Promising detection approaches include statistical tests, robust learning, and forensics. However, significant challenges remain in translating academic defenses like adversarial training and sanitization into practical tools ready for operational use. With safety and trustworthiness at stake, more research on benchmarking evaluations, adaptive attacks, fundamental tradeoffs, and real-world deployment of defenses is urgently needed. Understanding vulnerabilities and developing resilient machine learning pipelines will only grow in importance as data integrity is fundamental to developing safe artificial intelligence. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2023.

One of the most frequently encountered challenges for smart grid designers is a selection of best-fit communication technology. Each smart grid project is diverse owing to variances in its geography and categorization, vulnerability to weather changes, customer profile and choice, and other factors, but it is primarily defined by the smart grid applications deployed. Robust and quick data transfer is required for trustworthy smart grid operation and successful operation of installed applications, which mandates an optimal and best-fit communication technology selection. This paper discusses an approach for optimizing selection of wireless technologies for smart grid projects. An example of Guwahati city smart grid pilot in India has been used as case study to exemplify the presented approach. This article deals with the proposal of a new type of conversion of KPIs. This new type of calculation gives more weight and emphasis to the resulting profitability of production. This is fundamentally different from the basic calculation of KPIs, which work only with current data. This paper proposed two methods to examine metal particles in fluid using Hall Effect Sensor under the condition of nondestructive testing based on two conditions: test of particles in oil samples, and test of particles in industrial machinery simulation. Hall Effect Sensor was a low-cost device had ability to detect magnetic fields in objects, so this work applied Hall Probe to measure the density of metal in liquid. Hereby, hydraulic liquid was selected to examine because it was one of the most use in industrial machines. By using the sensor, two types of experiment were designed: test of oil sample, and test of simulation process, where the results showed that Hall Effect Sensor had ability to measure particles in both two types of experiment. For oil sample test, the sensor was able to detect metallic powder when the number of contaminants were greater than or equal to 10 milligrams (equivalented to NAS 15 standard). On the other hand, to measure particle in simulation process, magnetic field were generated in two ways, i.e. use of electromagnet, and use of permanent magnet. For using electromagnet as magnetic field source, the result showed that temperature had an influence on metal particle evaluation. Therefore, to get the most accurate value, system’s temperature had to employed in calculation process. While, the result of using permanent magnet to generate magnetic field showed that the relationship between output voltage and amount of metal particles were probably in linear form. To apply this method in industrial applications could be an inexpensive way to help officer in detecting metal particle in oil which was able to extend service time of hydraulic liquid properly.

The proliferation of space technology and the decreasing cost of launching services have spurred the development of components for CubeSats. Among these components, the power storage subsystem, which is responsible for distributing power stored in batteries to the system, is of utmost importance. However, ensuring battery functionality in the harsh space environment, characterized by low temperatures, poses a significant challenge. Traditional external heating systems that heat batteries are often complex and unsuitable for resource-limited environments like CubeSats. Therefore, this paper proposes AC internal heating based on charge pump topology to generate AC current and validate battery aging analysis via Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). This method offers efficiency in terms of space utilization and rapid heating rates. The results of our study demonstrate that the proposed heating system achieves a heating rate of 7.5 degrees Celsius in Panasonic NCR18650 cells with an RMS current of 4.37C while consuming only 1.85% of the cell's energy. Moreover, after 60 heating cycles, no signs of battery degradation were observed, making it suitable for non-serviceable battery systems.

Many application from the bee colony health state monitoring could be efficiently solved using a computer vision techniques. One of such challenges is an efficient way for counting the number of incoming and outcoming bees, which could be used to further analyse many trends, such as the bee colony health state, blooming periods, or for investigating the effects of agricultural spraying. In this paper, we compare three methods for the automated bee counting over two own datasets. The best performing method is based on the ResNet-50 convolutional neural network classifier, which achieved accuracy of 87% over the BUT1 dataset and the accuracy of 93% over the BUT2 dataset. © 2024, CC BY.

In this study, an inquiry was conducted to examine the influence of temperature on the crystal structure of sodium titanate (NTO). NTO was synthesized using NaCl, TTIP, citric acid, and ethylene glycol as precursors. The NaCl-citric acid precursor was dissolved in purified water, while the titanium precursor was prepared by blending ethylene glycol with TTIP. After vigorous stirring, the precursor solution was placed in a Teflon-coated stainless steel autoclave, subjected to preheating, and subsequently dried to form a gel. The gel underwent calcination at temperatures ranging from 800 to 1000 °C for 3 hours each. The resulting samples were rinsed with deionized water and dried to eliminate residual NaCl. Based on the results of XRD characterization, the NaTi4O8 phase experienced decomposition into rutile form when the calcination temperature was increased from 800-1000 °C and began to be identified as a rutile phase at a temperature of 900 °C. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
