A heuristic approach for lactate threshold estimation for training decision-making: An accessible and easy to use solution for recreational runners

In this work, a heuristic as operational tool to estimate the lactate threshold and to facilitate its integration into the training process of recreational runners is proposed. To do so, we formalize the principles for the lactate threshold estimation from empirical data and an iterative methodology that enables experience based learning. This strategy arises as a robust and adaptive approach to solve data analysis problems. We compare the results of the heuristic with the most commonly used protocol by making a first quantitative error analysis to show its reliability. Additionally, we provide a computational algorithm so that this quantitative analysis can be easily performed in other lactate threshold protocols. With this work, we have shown that a heuristic (%60 of endurance running speed reserve), serves for the same purpose of the most commonly used protocol in recreational runners, but improving its operational limitations of accessibility and consistent use. Childhood respiratory diseases remain a major global health concern, with school-centered exposures to air pollution and extreme temperatures posing significant risks. We conducted a spatiotemporal stratified multi-city, school-based design to evaluate underexplored risk patterns of fine particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤1 µm, nitrate, sulfate, ammonium, chloride, black carbon, and temperature exposures including daily mean, extremes, and short-term variability. The analysis included 265,076 pneumonia and/or tracheitis cases among schoolchildren in Jiangsu Province, China. We observed significant urban–rural disparities and spatial clustering in air pollution and temperature variation. Cumulative exposure to all pollutants was positively associated with increased risk of illness-related absences, with stronger effects observed in urban schools and during low-temperature conditions overall. Boys showed higher initial sensitivity to air pollution, while girls exhibited greater vulnerability after 10–14 days. Notably, urban children were most affected by combined exposures to low temperature-high pollution, whereas rural children experienced greater combined risks under high-temperature conditions. In contrast, short-term temperature variability contributed minimally to the observed health effects. These findings support the development of early warning systems for composite exposures, informed by exposure–risk profiles, to enable timely school intervention and protect schoolchildren’s respiratory health.

Biased-Relay Feedback Identification for Time Delay systems

The paper describes a new technique for estimation up to three points on a process frequency response from a single biased-relay feedback test without using the FFT algorithm. The new technique called “shifting method” extends possibilities of the relay feedback identification of dynamic systems describable by linear models. The introduced identification method is applicable for systems with dead time if there are stable limit cycles in biased-relay feedback tests. This approach enables to fit up to five parameters of a process transfer function from data observed by one relay experiment. The method may be used for parameter estimation of linear mathematical models with various structures and therefore it can be used for parameter fitting both isochronic and anisochronic linear models. This is demonstrated on proportional and integrating time delay processes described by isochronic or anisochronic linear models. The paper also introduces explicit formulas for the parameter estimation of the process model of the second order plus time delay. The applicability of the proposed method is demonstrated on simulated examples. Matlab/Simulink programming environment was used for all simulations. © 2017

Rice hull which is one of the agricultural wastes in Japan has been demanded to reuse as the industrial materials. Rice hull silica carbon (RHSC) material, made from rice hull is produced by mixing rice hull powder with a phenol resin, and then carbonizing and the mixture in the nitrogen gas atmosphere at high temperatures. The RHSC is a porous carbon material utilizing natural porous structure originated from the rice hull. Therefore, reduction in environmental pollution is expected by the RHSC which is inexpensive and unique. In addition, a core competence of low friction coefficient, lubrication free, and high water resistance was reported for the RHSC in previous research. However, the RHSC has low reliability of strength originated potentially from the porous structure. Since the reliability of the RHSC is evaluated by a fatigue test which is required several weeks, calculating the fatigue strength by simulation analysis is useful. In this study, fatigue strength simulation analysis in natural porous structure was figured out and the size effect which influences the strength of the material was investigated. ©2018 Soc. Mater. Magnetism of reduced graphene oxide/rGO prepared by a green synthesis method from coconut shells (rGO-s) and the commercial product (rGO-c, ®Graphenea) have been investigated. Similar magnetic feature of a weak ferromagnetism concomitant with diamagnetic nature was observed in both samples. At 300 K, the saturation magnetization (MS) of rGO-s is approximately 14×10-3 emu/g, which is about 3 times of that observed in rGO-c (∼5×10-3 emu/g). The noticeable difference in the MS is suggested due to the different concentration of oxygen-functional groups and other defects presented in the rGO sheets. The samples have similar structure and contains similar functional groups, yet rGO-s contains higher concentration of oxygen-functional groups and defects than rGO-c. A paramagnetic behavior was also indicated at low temperature. This study supports an indication of the defect-induced-magnetism in rGO and confirms that various magnetic features, such as ferromagnetic, diamagnetic and paramagnetic, can coexist in rGO. © 2019 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland.

In the present time traditional piezoelectric accelerometers are mostly used in the industrial environment. Mechanical size and relatively higher price of the sensors can impede their mass application in the diagnostics of machines. In the past, MEMS sensors were inappropriate for small signals measurement due to their own, relatively high, output noise level. But the development of MEMS structures is improving. Main parameters, such as price, frequency range, dynamic range, but mainly ultralow noise density represent significant role in the potential mass usage of the MEMS accelerometers in the vi-brodiagnostics field. Ultralow noise MEMS accelerometers manufactured by Analog Devices, Colibrys and Silicon Designs were selected and output noise was measured. Rough data from accelerometer were re-scaled and integrated from acceleration to velocity domain and filtered – from wide-band range to ISO range. Based on the results, comparison with traditional piezoelectric industrial accelerometers was done. The noise of measured MEMS accelerometers is from 0.0029 mm/s to 0.022 mm/s, which is comparable to the piezo sensors noise level. It is a challenging and hard problem to control the multi-joint robot manipulators due to the nonlinearities which are extremely and strongly coupled in the set of dynamic equations governing the motion dynamics of the robot system. This paper presents a robot control technique for definitely reconstructing motions. The controlled robot is used in small industries such as welding and painting work. The proposed method is a simple one and decentralized linear joint control strategy. Exactly describing, it is an user-oriented method and no need complex computation. In this study, at first, the mathematical model of each joint of the 5 DOF robot arm is derived individually. Secondly, to improve the control performance in transient response, nonlinear controllers such as feedback linearization as well as sliding mode control are exploited to compensate the nonlinearities and uncertainties. Finally, experiments are carried out to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the presented approach, and the results are compared to those of the tuned PID controller. The results point out that the proposed control scheme is simple, realistic and can be easily employed on robot manipulators in the real world. © Springer International Publishing AG 2018.

We present a new simple approach to extend the admissible region of a saturated control law for discrete-time linear systems under state and input constraints. The approach is based on the interpolation of a given, performance driven, control law and a low-gain controller. The latter is designed such that its admissible set has maximum volume. The interpolation does not require on-line numerical optimization, and an analytical formula for the controller is given. Several numerical examples are presented to illustrate the control technique. © 2018

Utility-scale photovoltaic (USPV) stands out as one of the foremost renewable energy technologies crucial for achieving global climate targets, owing to its low carbon footprint. While individual case studies exist, a comprehensive global analysis of the impacts of USPV deployment on land-cover changes and subsequent carbon pool dynamics across diverse ecosystems remains lacking. Here we show that worldwide deployment of USPV plants between 2000 and 2018 would increase the carbon pool of the hosting ecosystem by a total of 2.1 TgC over their lifespans, as revealed by the ensemble mean of multiple datasets. Although the carbon pool changes associated with global USPV deployment currently contribute approximately\({15.9}_{-5.8}^{+1.0}\%\)(\({{{\mathrm{ensemble}}\; {\mathrm{mean}}}}_{-{{\mathrm{difference}}\; {\mathrm{to}}\; {\mathrm{percentile}}}\,25}^{+{{\mathrm{difference}}\; {\mathrm{to}}\; {\mathrm{percentile}}}\,75}\)) (or an average absolute carbon footprint of approximately\({10.5}_{-3.8}^{+0.5}\,{\mathrm{g}}\)CO2-equivalent per kilowatt-hour) of the carbon footprint of USPV plants, this share is projected to increase by around 7-fold by 2050, driven primarily by decreasing photovoltaic manufacturing emissions. Notably, optimizing land management strategies can potentially enhance carbon density in the hosting ecosystem of existing USPV plants by approximately\({3.0}_{-0.4}^{+3.7}\,{\mathrm{kgC}}\,{\mathrm{m}}^{-2}\), thereby facilitating an average reduction of\({4.3}_{-0.2}^{+9.3}\%\)in the carbon footprint of these USPV plants.
