This paper opens up an issue regarding to power system investment planning. In order to obtain a sustainable electricity supply, the power outage should be minimized. Maintenance cost plays as an essential element in investment planning, therefore misdirect investment should be avoided. Since soft computing can solved this problem, this paper offers a review in solving investment planning problem through such approaches. The main objective of this paper is to examine the concept and findings by the researchers in power system investment planning problem. Besides, this paper will highlight the most relevant contributions and limitations that can be improve in the other research. Finally, this paper will be pointed out some trends in power system investment planning problem.

Biomass concentration is an important indicator of production rate in polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) fermentation process. In current practice, measurement of biomass concentration is done off-line by laboratory analysis that is unsuitable for online process monitoring and control. Soft-sensor is often used as an alternative that provides an estimate of hard to measure parameters from easy to measure process data. However, most of these studies use simulated data or data generated from mathematical model that was developed without full consideration of process and measurement uncertainty. In this study, a soft-sensor is developed from real production data for PHA fermentation in pilot-scale bioreactor with the appropriate data pre-processing techniques applied to process data that was obtained from this system. Multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network is used to estimate biomass concentration using secondary process parameters such as dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature, pH and agitation speed as inputs. Different models are developed based on different batches of production data and various network architecture in order to study the appropriate integration of process data and network topology that gives the best model accuracy. Results indicate that the biomass soft-sensor developed using MLP-ANN provides a better estimate of biomass in comparison to radial basis function (RBF) neural network and support vector regression (SVR) methods. The developed soft-sensor can be further used in monitoring and control of production output.

This paper presents the detection of foreign bodies in roasted coffee by using active thermography with real-time thermal image processing. Foreign bodies, including stone, wood, etc., are found in roasted coffee beans contaminated during drying process and transportation. The principle of radiation from objects with different emissivity and heat capacity is applied. The heat radiation from the roasted coffee and the foreign body are different;therefore, the thermal image can be used to identify the foreign objects. The active thermography system consists of a thermal image camera and computer image processing, heat source and conveyor systemcontrolled by programmable logic controller. The testing and experimental results of the proposed system show that the foreign bodies in roasted coffee beans can be found in all batches, however, the number counting of foreign objects are inaccurate.

This paper presents about methods for evaluation of safety integrity level (SIL) which is significant to reduce risk of failure of block valve in gas pipeline system by using Markov Model method which refer to International standard IEC 61508/61511.
