High frequency (HF) electrical stimulations have proven to be able to block nerve conductions, which would have widespread potential clinical applications. However, some studies demonstrated that the HF blocking stimulus of short duration of 5 s could also cause long lasting injuries to neural conductions. Further revelations of the effects of various kinds of HF stimulus on nerve's conduction would provide more insights into the possible underlying mechanisms and directions towards designing more safe and efficacious HF waveforms. This study investigated the blocking and injur-ing effects of the asymmetric HF currents on neural conductions on bullfrog's sciatic nerves. The used stimulus includ-ed the 5 s low frequency (10 Hz) pulse train to generate control and test compound action potentials (CAPs) and the 5 s HF asymmetric currents to block the CAPs conduction. The asymmetric HF waveforms were characterized by various frequencies (F=1, 2, or 5 kHz) and anode-to-cathode pulse width ratios (r=1, 2, or 3), and the first cathode pulse had a constant width of 0.05 ms. The parameters of blocking rates (BR) and injuring rates (IR) were measured to identify the possible effects. The results demonstrated that the HF currents of relatively high F (5 kHz) and low r (1 and 2) might be useful for achieving nerve conduction blockades of relatively high blocking rates and low injury rates. © VDE VERLAG GMBH - Berlin - Offenbach.

Dominant four-pole placement in filtered PID control loop with delay

The paper proposes a novel approach to the filter design in the delayed PID control loop. The novel approach is based on the dominant four-pole placement providing all five controller parameters including the filter time constant and damping factor. Moreover, the dominant four-pole placement is carried out iteratively as long as an optimum dominant four-pole placement is achieved by means of the constrained IAE optimization. The constraints considered for the optimization are the dominance of the placed poles and the fixed value of the filter damping factor. The achieved optimum dominant four-pole placement then corresponds to the least IAE obtained under these constraints. Then the filtered PID controller results very close to the ideal PID controller up to the filter cut-off frequency. Finally, the constrained IAE optimization of the disturbance rejection is preferred in the paper. © 2017

Background: Hearing loss affects access to spoken language, which can affect cognition and development, and can negatively affect social wellbeing. We present updated estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study on the prevalence of hearing loss in 2019, as well as the condition's associated disability. Methods: We did systematic reviews of population-representative surveys on hearing loss prevalence from 1990 to 2019. We fitted nested meta-regression models for severity-specific prevalence, accounting for hearing aid coverage, cause, and the presence of tinnitus. We also forecasted the prevalence of hearing loss until 2050. Findings: An estimated 1·57 billion (95% uncertainty interval 1·51–1·64) people globally had hearing loss in 2019, accounting for one in five people (20·3% [19·5–21·1]). Of these, 403·3 million (357·3–449·5) people had hearing loss that was moderate or higher in severity after adjusting for hearing aid use, and 430·4 million (381·7–479·6) without adjustment. The largest number of people with moderate-to-complete hearing loss resided in the Western Pacific region (127·1 million people [112·3–142·6]). Of all people with a hearing impairment, 62·1% (60·2–63·9) were older than 50 years. The Healthcare Access and Quality (HAQ) Index explained 65·8% of the variation in national age-standardised rates of years lived with disability, because countries with a low HAQ Index had higher rates of years lived with disability. By 2050, a projected 2·45 billion (2·35–2·56) people will have hearing loss, a 56·1% (47·3–65·2) increase from 2019, despite stable age-standardised prevalence. Interpretation: As populations age, the number of people with hearing loss will increase. Interventions such as childhood screening, hearing aids, effective management of otitis media and meningitis, and cochlear implants have the potential to ameliorate this burden. Modelling and simulation of the dynamic indoor relative humidity behaviour of a building is essential to test any proposed thermal comfort controller and strategy in the building. Like other plants, the dynamic indoor relative humidity behaviour of a building can be developed based on the white box model, black box model, and grey box model. This research focuses on the usage of autoregressive–moving-average (ARMA) model, a type of black box model to represent the dynamic indoor relative humidity behaviour of Industrial instrumentation Laboratory at Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), UniversitiTeknologi Malaysia (UTM) Kuala Lumpur and uses the real recorded data from the laboratory and minimal knowledge regarding the physical characteristics of the humidity behaviour in the laboratory. The performance of the ARMA model developed in this research is compared with the real recorded data from the laboratory. Result obtained shows that the ARMA model is enough for modelling and simulating the dynamic indoor relative humidity behaviour of the laboratory

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a heterogeneous disease that develops through diverse pathophysiological processes and molecular mechanisms that are often specific to cell type. Here, to characterize the genetic contribution to these processes across ancestry groups, we aggregate genome-wide association study data from 2,535,601 individuals (39.7% not of European ancestry), including 428,452 cases of T2D. We identify 1,289 independent association signals at genome-wide significance (P < 5 × 10) that map to 611 loci, of which 145 loci are, to our knowledge, previously unreported. We define eight non-overlapping clusters of T2D signals that are characterized by distinct profiles of cardiometabolic trait associations. These clusters are differentially enriched for cell-type-specific regions of open chromatin, including pancreatic islets, adipocytes, endothelial cells and enteroendocrine cells. We build cluster-specific partitioned polygenic scores in a further 279,552 individuals of diverse ancestry, including 30,288 cases of T2D, and test their association with T2D-related vascular outcomes. Cluster-specific partitioned polygenic scores are associated with coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease and end-stage diabetic nephropathy across ancestry groups, highlighting the importance of obesity-related processes in the development of vascular outcomes. Our findings show the value of integrating multi-ancestry genome-wide association study data with single-cell epigenomics to disentangle the aetiological heterogeneity that drives the development and progression of T2D. This might offer a route to optimize global access to genetically informed diabetes care.

On the basis of increasing the transmission distance of the 1553B bus, in order to maintain the simplicity and stability of the bus and improve its anti-jamming ability, the 1553B signal relay circuit based on FPGA is designed in this paper. The signal transmission part is consists of the software and the hardware, and the chip of ZYNQ series is used in the FPGA. Firstly, the transmitted signal oscillation is transformed into a group of positive and negative differential signals, which are realized by transformer (pmdb25). Secondly, the signal is sent to the main control chip of ZYNQ series through signal acquisition chip and level conversion chip. Finally, the data is processed by software program and forwarded to the receiver. The specific experiments have been done on the 1553B signal transmission platform, which significantly show that the proposed scheme is reasonable and reliable.

This paper presents the method used for designing, constructing, and assembling a device that is used for monitoring health parameters for Alzheimer suffering patients. By using one sensor for environmental temperature, atmospheric pressure and for heart pulse, it displays all those parameters on a little display, and also on a smartphone via Bluetooth connection.

We present some improvements on interpolation based control (IC) for linear discrete-time systems with polyhedral constraints on the control and the states variables. The plant may be uncertain, time-varying, and subject to bounded disturbances. Roughly speaking, IC approach is based on the interpolation between an inner and an outer controller. The extension presented here is twofold. On the one hand, the IC approach is extended to deal with higher order inner controllers, making it e.g. possible to incorporate integral action in a vicinity of the origin. On the other hand, this paper presents a modification that better exploits the control signal range. As with previous IC strategies, the presented method demands relatively low online computational resources, and is applicable also to uncertain plants. The benefits of the improved scheme are illustrated in some examples. © 2017

Rice hull, which is one of the agricultural waste in Japan, has been required for reuse from the viewpoint of environment protection. Rice hull has the porous structure that originates from plants. Rice hull silica carbon (RHSC) material is manufactured by mixing and impregnating the rice hull with a phenol resin, and then carbonizing it in a nitrogen gas atmosphere at high temperatures. RHSC has core competencies such as low friction coefficient and water resistance, and it is expected to be applied to linear guide elements and sliding bearing. Moreover, an improvement in friction property is expected by keeping the lubricating oil in the natural porous structure. In this study, the friction and wear mechanisms of RHSC are discussed from the tribology properties obtained by block-on-ring test and the worn surfaces observed with a laser microscope. © 2018 Society of Materials engineering for Resources of Japan.
