A solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is known as an interesting energy conversion device because of its fuel flexibility and high efficiency. The hydrogen-rich stream is used as fuel carrier converting to generate electrical energy. A non-stoichiometric thermodynamic model based on minimum free energy was performed to predict the amount of hydrogen production via the methanol reforming under supercritical water (SCW) condition. The effects of SCW reaction temperature and water-to-methanol molar ratio on the SOFC power generation integrated with SCW reforming from methanol were investigated. The hydrogen yield, the required heat duty for a feed preheater and a SCW reactor and the SOFC power generation increase with increasing the SCW reaction temperature and the amount of water fed in SCW reactor. Under operating parameters of SCW reformer based on 1 mole/sec of methanol fed at the high temperature of 1273 K and water-to-methanol molar ratio of 5, the SOFC electrical power of 246 kW was produced with the maximum fuel utilization of 0.7. © 2016 Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

There is an emerging need of intelligent vehicles on indoor environments such as university campuses, airports or shopping malls. These intelligent vehicles can help elderly, disabled, or people with heavy luggage. This paper describes an intelligent vehicle that can be used indoor as well as outdoor areas for this purpose. Finding the exact location for indoor robots is not an easy task, since Global Positioning system (GPS) is not available indoors. In this work onboard sensors such as motor encoder and steering-wheel encoder were used to obtain localization estimates. The errors are determined to be low even when the vehicle travels long distances. © 2017 ACM.

As the hydrogen-rich gas produced by autothermal reforming from ethanol is utilized for the power generation via fuel cell, the change in amount of ethanol and water fed into the autothermal reformer has significant effects on the control of electricity generation and autothermal reaction temperature. The change of water and ethanol amounts affecting on the autothermal reformer temperature control system was studied in this work. An internal model control (IMC) method was designed to control the adiabatic reaction temperature of autothermal reformer by manipulating the input air flow rate. Theoretical analysis demonstrated that IMC method can realize desired performance to control the autothermal reaction temperature when the feed amounts were changed. The results of autothemal reformer control system with and without the feed temperature controller of the preheater unit were compared to offer the suitable control system. © 2016 Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Visible Light Communication (VLC) for indoor use equipped with a Star redundant system, using LED (light emitting diode) light bulbs and photodiodes as data receivers and transmitters, respectively, was developed in this research. The data for the transmission experiment was in a text files format encoded with the Manchester algorithm. White-light LEDs were used. This system was tested with three types of photodiodes namely VBPW24R, FDS10×10, and OSD100-E. The data was backed up with 3 redundant control sets of LED modules. Arduino UNO R3 microcontroller was used in a case that one module is damaged. Via its USB port (Universal Serial Bus port), the system can also be connected to other devices such as smart phones and computers. Moreover, its monitor can display useful information about its operation as well as notifications to inform users about any malfunctions happening to a specific module. © 2016 Institute of control, Robotics and systems - ICROS.

This paper presents a study and design of a robotic fish that imitates bladder function of a fish by focusing on the orientation performance. The main focus of the research is to develop the robotic fish which can perform the natural orientation of a fish. Not only the turning maneuver of the robotic fish takes place in horizontal plane or vertical plane at a time, but also in both of horizontal and vertical planes simultaneously. The orientation of the robot is conducted by anti-weight equilibriums, which are installed near the center of gravity of the robot, to maintain the desired position. The collection of robotic orientations is operated by designed apparatus including 4 anti-weight objects which attached with servo motors for rolling and pitching. The implementation of the proposed robotic fish shows a good performance as well as illustrate the robustness of such a robotic framework.

A representation of features is a very important parameter when creating machine learning models. The main goal of this paper is to introduce a way to compare feature space transformations that change this representation. It particularly deals with a comparison of a method that uses a genetic programming based on different fitness functions for transformation of feature space. The fitness function is a very important part of the genetic algorithm because it defines required properties of new feature space. Several possible fitness functions are described and compared in this paper. The process of the comparison is also introduced in this paper and selected functions are tested and their results are compared to each other. These results are compared and upsides and downsides of each method are discussed in conclusion. A part of the work is a framework used to automate processes needed to create this comparison. © 2016

Background: Elevated titers of antibodies against oxidized low-density lipoproteins-cholesterol (ox-LDL-Ab) have been reported among professional athletes, paradoxically reflecting an increased risk of developing atherogenic and/or cardiovascular events. This study aimed to determine titers of ox-LDL-Ab in a group of Cameroonian professional soccer players, and evaluate their evolution during part of a competition season as well as the plasmatic antioxidant status to find out if this latter correlates with ox-LDL-Ab . Methods: We conducted a descriptive cohort study in 2012 including 18 healthy male soccer players. Three samplings were performed in March (T1), May (T2), and July 2012 (T3) to assess the lipid profile, titers of ox-LDL-Ab, and plasmatic concentrations of four antioxidants: the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and uric acid. Results: Ages ranged from 16 to 28 years with a median (interquartile range) of 19.5 (19-23) years. Total cholesterol, high-density lipoproteins-cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoproteins-cholesterol (LDL-C) and triglycerides varied within normal ranges throughout the three samplings. While total cholesterol and LDL-C titers increased significantly (p = 0.003 and p = 0.006, respectively), triglycerides and HDL-C values varied non-significantly throughout the measurements (p = 0.061 and p = 0.192, respectively). The median ox-LDL-Ab titers were respectively: 653.3 (468.2-838.8) mIU/ml at T1, 777.7 (553.7-1150.7) mIU/ml at T2, and 1037.7 (901.7-1481.5) mIU/ml at T3. Overall, ox-LDL-Ab titers increased significantly from T1 to T3 (p = 0.006). Concomitantly, uric acid and FRAP concentrations decreased significantly (p = 0.001 and p = 0.003, respectively);on the contrary, GSH and SOD values increased, but insignificantly (p = 0.115 and p = 0.110, respectively). Robust ${\mathscr {H}}_{\infty }$ Filtering for a Class of Two-Dimensional Uncertain Fuzzy systems With Randomly Occurring Mixed Delays

This paper is concerned with the robust H ∞ filtering problem for a class of 2-D uncertain fuzzy systems with randomly occurring mixed delays (ROMDs). The underlying 2-D systems are described by the Fornasini-Marchesini model, and the uncertainty is expressed in a linear fraction form. An improved Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model corresponding to the spatial promise variables is adopted to represent the complicated 2-D nonlinear system. The mixed delays consisting of both discrete and distributed delays are allowed to appear in a random manner governed by two sets of Bernoulli distributed white sequences with known probability. A full-order fuzzy filter is constructed to estimate the output signal such that, in the presence of parameter uncertainties and ROMDs, the dynamics of the estimation errors is asymptotically stable with a prescribed H ∞ disturbance attenuation level. Based on the stochastic analysis technique and the Lyapunov-like functional, sufficient conditions are established to ensure the existence of the desired filters, and the explicit expressions of such filters are derived by means of the solution to a class of convex optimization problems that can be solved via standard software packages. A numerical example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed filter design algorithms, and the filter performances with and without fuzzy rules are also compared.

Background: Experimental and epidemiological studies indicate an association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) air pollution and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In view of the high and increasing prevalence of diabetes, we aimed to quantify the burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM_2·5 originating from ambient and household air pollution. Methods: We systematically compiled all relevant cohort and case-control studies assessing the effect of exposure to household and ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2·5) air pollution on type 2 diabetes incidence and mortality. We derived an exposure–response curve from the extracted relative risk estimates using the MR-BRT (meta-regression—Bayesian, regularised, trimmed) tool. The estimated curve was linked to ambient and household PM_2·5 exposures from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019, and estimates of the attributable burden (population attributable fractions and rates per 100 000 population of deaths and disability-adjusted life-years) for 204 countries from 1990 to 2019 were calculated. We also assessed the role of changes in exposure, population size, age, and type 2 diabetes incidence in the observed trend in PM_2·5-attributable type 2 diabetes burden. All estimates are presented with 95% uncertainty intervals. Findings: In 2019, approximately a fifth of the global burden of type 2 diabetes was attributable to PM_2·5 exposure, with an estimated 3·78 (95% uncertainty interval 2·68–4·83) deaths per 100 000 population and 167 (117–223) disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) per 100 000 population. Approximately 13·4% (9·49–17·5) of deaths and 13·6% (9·73–17·9) of DALYs due to type 2 diabetes were contributed by ambient PM2·5, and 6·50% (4·22–9·53) of deaths and 5·92% (3·81–8·64) of DALYs by household air pollution.
