Background: Elevated titers of antibodies against oxidized low-density lipoproteins-cholesterol (ox-LDL-Ab) have been reported among professional athletes, paradoxically reflecting an increased risk of developing atherogenic and/or cardiovascular events. This study aimed to determine titers of ox-LDL-Ab in a group of Cameroonian professional soccer players, and evaluate their evolution during part of a competition season as well as the plasmatic antioxidant status to find out if this latter correlates with ox-LDL-Ab . Methods: We conducted a descriptive cohort study in 2012 including 18 healthy male soccer players. Three samplings were performed in March (T1), May (T2), and July 2012 (T3) to assess the lipid profile, titers of ox-LDL-Ab, and plasmatic concentrations of four antioxidants: the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and uric acid. Results: Ages ranged from 16 to 28 years with a median (interquartile range) of 19.5 (19-23) years. Total cholesterol, high-density lipoproteins-cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoproteins-cholesterol (LDL-C) and triglycerides varied within normal ranges throughout the three samplings. While total cholesterol and LDL-C titers increased significantly (p = 0.003 and p = 0.006, respectively), triglycerides and HDL-C values varied non-significantly throughout the measurements (p = 0.061 and p = 0.192, respectively). The median ox-LDL-Ab titers were respectively: 653.3 (468.2-838.8) mIU/ml at T1, 777.7 (553.7-1150.7) mIU/ml at T2, and 1037.7 (901.7-1481.5) mIU/ml at T3. Overall, ox-LDL-Ab titers increased significantly from T1 to T3 (p = 0.006). Concomitantly, uric acid and FRAP concentrations decreased significantly (p = 0.001 and p = 0.003, respectively);on the contrary, GSH and SOD values increased, but insignificantly (p = 0.115 and p = 0.110, respectively). Robust ${\mathscr {H}}_{\infty }$ Filtering for a Class of Two-Dimensional Uncertain Fuzzy systems With Randomly Occurring Mixed Delays

This paper is concerned with the robust H ∞ filtering problem for a class of 2-D uncertain fuzzy systems with randomly occurring mixed delays (ROMDs). The underlying 2-D systems are described by the Fornasini-Marchesini model, and the uncertainty is expressed in a linear fraction form. An improved Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model corresponding to the spatial promise variables is adopted to represent the complicated 2-D nonlinear system. The mixed delays consisting of both discrete and distributed delays are allowed to appear in a random manner governed by two sets of Bernoulli distributed white sequences with known probability. A full-order fuzzy filter is constructed to estimate the output signal such that, in the presence of parameter uncertainties and ROMDs, the dynamics of the estimation errors is asymptotically stable with a prescribed H ∞ disturbance attenuation level. Based on the stochastic analysis technique and the Lyapunov-like functional, sufficient conditions are established to ensure the existence of the desired filters, and the explicit expressions of such filters are derived by means of the solution to a class of convex optimization problems that can be solved via standard software packages. A numerical example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed filter design algorithms, and the filter performances with and without fuzzy rules are also compared.

Background: Experimental and epidemiological studies indicate an association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) air pollution and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In view of the high and increasing prevalence of diabetes, we aimed to quantify the burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM_2·5 originating from ambient and household air pollution. Methods: We systematically compiled all relevant cohort and case-control studies assessing the effect of exposure to household and ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2·5) air pollution on type 2 diabetes incidence and mortality. We derived an exposure–response curve from the extracted relative risk estimates using the MR-BRT (meta-regression—Bayesian, regularised, trimmed) tool. The estimated curve was linked to ambient and household PM_2·5 exposures from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019, and estimates of the attributable burden (population attributable fractions and rates per 100 000 population of deaths and disability-adjusted life-years) for 204 countries from 1990 to 2019 were calculated. We also assessed the role of changes in exposure, population size, age, and type 2 diabetes incidence in the observed trend in PM_2·5-attributable type 2 diabetes burden. All estimates are presented with 95% uncertainty intervals. Findings: In 2019, approximately a fifth of the global burden of type 2 diabetes was attributable to PM_2·5 exposure, with an estimated 3·78 (95% uncertainty interval 2·68–4·83) deaths per 100 000 population and 167 (117–223) disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) per 100 000 population. Approximately 13·4% (9·49–17·5) of deaths and 13·6% (9·73–17·9) of DALYs due to type 2 diabetes were contributed by ambient PM2·5, and 6·50% (4·22–9·53) of deaths and 5·92% (3·81–8·64) of DALYs by household air pollution. The main aim of presented paper is experimental obtaining of Lamb wave dispersion curves in plates using broadband ultrasonic and acoustic emission transducers with additional converters facilitating the measurement of wavelength. Guided Lamb waves are widely used for qualitative analysis of damage in various types of structures. An important factor for generally successful analysis is the incorporation of suitable excitation method of the desired mode of Lamb wave. This article is aimed to qualitatively evaluate four different methods of excitation of a particular mode of Lamb wave, namely excitation by longitudinal waves with the use of liquid and plexiglass wedge, excitation by longitudinal waves with the use of comb-structure element and excitation by longitudinal waves with the use of the transducer in itself, placed on the surface. © 2017 Technical University of Košice - faculty of Mechanical engineering.

The aim of the paper is to compare the results of tuning the PID control loop with delay performed by means of the IAE optimization technique and the dominant pole placement. Both these approaches are based on quite distinct requirements but their application results in control loop behaviour patterns not much different from each other. To obtain a generalized view of this comparison the control loop model is formulated in dimensionless variables resulting from the physical similarity point of view and the optimization procedure is carried out in the pole assignment coordinates. The point of view of the dominant poles is followed in the IAE optimization as well and the dominance proof is provided by means of a novel criterion based on the argument increment rule. The study is devoted to the disturbance rejection ability of the PID control loop. © 2016

In micromanipulation, lots of methods have been developed to manipulate objects in microscale. However, few of them can be applied in both the transportation and the rotation of the micro objects. In this paper, we present a novel method to realize the non-contact transportation and rotation of the micro objects based on the vibration-induced swirl flow. A piezo actuator is set between the glass needle and a metal rod. The sine wave with controlled frequency and amplitude is input into the piezo actuator to drive the glass needle to move circularly, which is caused by resonance of the actuator and the metal rod. We place the glass needle under water and keep a limited distance to the bottom. The circular vibration of the glass needle can generate a swirl flow and low pressure around it. The low pressure can trap and transport the micro objects vertically to the glass needle, and the swirl flow can rotate the objects continuously. Finally, we realize the trap and rotation of micro object with only one piezo actuator. Experiments of transportation and rotation of microbeads are carried out, and the results demonstrate it is a simple, low-cost, effective micromanipulation method. © 2017 IEEE.
