An investigation on the performance of enhanced Nonlinear Proportional Integral Derivative (ENPID) controller is presented in this paper. The study is focused on the potential of the controller to perform well in tracking set point of pneumatic actuator system. Two control strategies of the ENPID are considered in this paper, namely Multi-rate NPID (MN-PID) and Self-regulation NPID (SN-PID). These control strategies are tested against NPID and conventional PID controller. Also, the dead-zone compensation (DZC) is applied to the system to overcome the dead-band of the valve. Feed forward path is also included to improve the tracking performance. Two different input signals i.e. sinusoidal and S-curve waveforms are used to evaluate the performance of the techniques. To further examine the controller performance, the frequency and amplitude of the sinusoidal test signal are varied. The effectiveness of the proposed controllers is verified through simulation and experimental studies.

Dental panoramic image analysis for enhancement biomarker of mandibular condyle for osteoporosis early detection

Osteoporosis is a degenerative disease characterized by low Bone Mineral Density (BMD). Currently, a BMD level is determined by Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) at the lumbar vertebrae and femur. Previous studies reported that dental panoramic radiography image has potential information for early osteoporosis detection. This work reported alternative scheme, that consists of the determination of the Region of Interest (ROI) the condyle mandibular in the image as biomarker and feature extraction from ROI and classification of bone conditions. The minimum value of intensity in the cavity area is used to compensate an offset on the ROI. For feature extraction, the fraction of intensity values in the ROI that represent high bone density and the ROI total area is perfomed. The classification will be evaluated from the ability of each feature and its combinations for the BMD detection in 2 classes (normal and abnormal), with the artificial neural network method. The evaluation system used 105 panoramic image data from menopause women which consist of 36 training data and 69 test data that were divided into 2 classes. The 2 classes of classification obtained 88.0% accuracy rate and 88.0% sensitivity rate.

The reaction-diffusion neural network is often described by semilinear diffusion partial differential equation (PDE). This article focuses on the asymptotical synchronization and synchronization for coupled reaction-diffusion neural networks with mixed delays (that is, discrete and infinite distributed delays) and Dirichlet boundary condition. First, using the Lyapunov–Krasoviskii functional scheme, the sufficient condition is obtained for the asymptotical synchronization of coupled semilinear diffusion PDEs with mixed time-delays and this condition is represented by linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), which is easy to be solved. Then the robust synchronization is considered in temporal-spatial domain for the coupled semilinear diffusion PDEs with mixed delays and external disturbances. In terms of the technique of completing squares, the sufficient condition is obtained for the robust synchronization. Finally, a numerical example of coupled semilinear diffusion PDEs with mixed time-delays is given to illustrate the correctness of the obtained results. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In recent years, wireless sensor network is used in a variety of applications and highly required. These wireless sensor network is powered by the battery with limit energy. Therefore, the integration of energy harvester and wireless sensor network has received more attention because it can prolong the lifetime of battery in a sensor node. The focus of this paper is to design the energy harvesting device from machine vibrations for wireless sensor node, which the amplitude and frequency of vibration source were contributed on the design. The structure of energy harvesting devices is a resonant type piezoelectric energy harvester with a proof mass at the tip of the beam for tuning its resonant frequency. The proposed piezoelectric energy harvesters were then designed and analyzed by using Finite Element Method (FEM) to optimize the natural frequency of the harvester. Then, the prototype energy harvesters were made and mounted to a vibration source for experiments. The result reveals that the optimal piezoelectric energy harvester can generate the output power of 82.29 μW at the resonant frequency of 50 Hz.

Visitors utilize the urban space based on their thermal perception and thermal environment. The thermal adaptation engages the user’s behavioural, physiological and psychological aspects. These aspects play critical roles in user’s ability to assess the thermal environments. Previous studies have rarely addressed the effects of identified factors such as gender, age and locality on outdoor thermal comfort, particularly in hot, dry climate. This study investigated the thermal comfort of visitors at two city squares in Iran based on their demographics as well as the role of thermal environment. Assessing the thermal comfort required taking physical measurement and questionnaire survey. In this study, a non-linear model known as the neural network autoregressive with exogenous input (NN-ARX) was employed. Five indices of physiological equivalent temperature (PET), predicted mean vote (PMV), standard effective temperature (SET), thermal sensation votes (TSVs) and mean radiant temperature (T mrt) were trained and tested using the NN-ARX. Then, the results were compared to the artificial neural network (ANN) and the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The findings showed the superiority of the NN-ARX over the ANN and the ANFIS. For the NN-ARX model, the statistical indicators of the root mean square error (RMSE) and the mean absolute error (MAE) were 0.53 and 0.36 for the PET, 1.28 and 0.71 for the PMV, 2.59 and 1.99 for the SET, 0.29 and 0.08 for the TSV and finally 0.19 and 0.04 for the T mrt.

This paper presents work progress of advanced control development achieved on a prototype 100kW biomass-fired boiler. The aim of the research was to develop a complex control system, which provides both the basic boiler heating performance control based on the actual consumption and the optimization of operating conditions using advanced control algorithms. Thus, the resultant control system should ensure these main control tasks, i.e. to provide the desired boiler power achieved with the minimal fuel consumption and simultaneously minimal operation environmental impacts as far as they are achievable. This research is carried out in the cooperation with the company Fiedler Zdeněk Ltd. and under the support of the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic. © 2014 IEEE.

The requirement for new flexible adaptive grippers is the ability to detect and recognize objects in their environments. It is known that robotic manipulators are highly nonlinear systems, and an accurate mathematical model is difficult to obtain, thus making it difficult make decision strategies using conventional techniques. Here, an adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) for controlling input displacement and object recognition of a new adaptive compliant gripper is presented. The grasping function of the proposed adaptive multi-fingered gripper relies on the physical contact of the finger with an object. This design of the each finger has embedded sensors as part of its structure. The use of embedded sensors in a robot gripper gives the control system the ability to control input displacement of the gripper and to recognize particular shapes of the grasping objects. Fuzzy based controllers develop a control signal according to grasping object shape which yields on the firing of the rule base. The selection of the proper rule base depending on the situation can be achieved by using an ANFIS strategy, which becomes an integrated method of approach for the control purposes. In the designed ANFIS scheme, neural network techniques are used to select a proper rule base, which is achieved using the back propagation algorithm. The simulation results presented in this paper show the effectiveness of the developed method.

This paper describes obtained mathematical identification results of an aircraft model and parameter analysis of mathematical models of human behavior while flying an aircraft. The part of this paper deals with a model parameters measurement possibility using flight simulator at the University of Defence. The paper also presents options and importance of using the flight simulator for pilot training and utilising the identified simulator parameters, described by transfer functions. These transfer functions are then applied for calculating mathematical models of mechatronic system pilot - flight simulator. This method provides monitoring of quality and progress of the pilot's training.

This paper presents a method to estimate volume from three-dimensional characteristics of symmetrical objects by computer vision system using laser light sectioning. The camera captures the image of laser line projected on the object moving on a conveyor. The captured images can be estimated the widths and heights at various locations along the object. The area of cross section can be integrated to be volume of the object. The image data is extracted from the structured laser light projecting on the surface. After image pre-processing, the laser profile is calculated the center of gravity in order to extract the image coordinate. The homography transformation is used to transform the extracted coordinate to the real world distance (in metric system). A metric vision based on light sectioning for estimating the volume of symmetrical shapes (rectangular shape and circular shape) of the object were tested. The accuracy of estimation can apply in the automatic size grading on the conveyer as well.

There are discussed various approaches to the evaluation of variables whose values are for any reason impossible to be measured directly. For moisture evaluation of combusted fuel, several formula were previously proposed. In the investigations reported in the paper they have been examined which of them is the most suitable for the moisture inference gained in small-scale biomass fired boilers. In the proposed neural network based on two neurons, the back propagation method has been used for derivation of the adaptation rule. Results of the evaluation are based on real data obtained in the experiments carried on a prototype 100 kW of Fiedler biomass boiler. The boiler has a special instrumentation making possible to check correctness of obtained results not only in the values of moisture but also in the other parameters occurring in the used formula. © 2014 IEEE.
