This paper presents a new multiphase-multilevel inverter configuration for open-winding loads and suitable for medium power (low-voltage/high-current) applications such as 'More Electric Aircraft'. Modular structure comprised of standard dual three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) along with one additional bi-directional semi-conductor device (MOSFET/IGBT) per phase and two capacitors with neutral point. The additional switches and capacitors are introduced to generate the additional voltage levels in outputs of the VSI. An original modified single carrier five-level modulation (MSCFM) algorithm is developed in this work and overcomes the complexity of standard space vector modulations, easy for real implementation purposes in digital processors. Proposed six-phase multilevel inverter configuration generates multilevel outputs with benefit in comprises with standard multilevel inverter topologies. Further, the complete numerical model of the proposed AC converter along with pulse-width modulation (PWM) is developed with Matlab/PLECS simulation software's. A set of observed results is presented in balanced working condition and always shown good agreement with the theoretical developments.

Over the past few years, using piezoelectric elements to harvest energy from ambient vibrations has been of great interest. However, there are significant challenges in converting the power generated from the piezoelectric elements to usable form. This paper discusses the design and fabrication of off-line power supply based on a self-oscillating flyback converter. An energy management circuit was upgraded for employing in the low power generators as piezo buzzer. Since the cost per unit of the existent energy management circuit is more expensive. Therefore, this research is also to concentrate on the design of a low-cost energy management circuit that the cost is lowers than 1 USD. The primary feedback self-oscillating flyback converter was considered due to its simplicity and low component count. In addition, this circuit also operates as buck-boost converter which is more appropriate for integrating to low power generator with unsteady and low output voltage. For the experimental setup, the circuit was defined to work with 2.5 - 5 V input voltage. It is able to achieve the good output voltage regulation 5 V +/-6% at the 10 mA maximum current consumption of load.

This paper presents the performance of developed model for a flexible plate structure using swarm intelligence via artificial bee colony and particle swarm optimization algorithms. An experimental rig of rectangular flexible plate with clamped-clamped-free-free edges boundary condition was designed and fabricated in this research. Then, the data acquisition and instrumentation systems were integrated on the rig to collect the input-output vibration data of flexible plate. The rig was excited during conducting the experiment using piezoelectric patch actuator to generate vibration responses. Later, the input-output data will be used to develop the model in this study. All the developed models were validated via mean squares error, one step-ahead prediction and correlation tests. The performance of developed models via artificial bee colony and particle swarm optimization algorithms has been compared each others. The simulation results show that the particle swarm optimization algorithm performs better than artificial bee colony algorithm and can be efficiently employed to be used as a platform of controller development in the future. © 2014 IEEE.

This study proposes a method to estimate thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity using a thermoelectric device and a thermographic camera. The experimental results were compared with others literatures. Three different materials including acrylic, apple, and potato were tested. The proposed method has proved to be effective. The experimental results for all selected materials are in comparable range with literature values. The proposed method can be a useful tool for determining thermal properties of solid biological materials with low thermal conductivity and diffusivity values.

In this paper a novel battery electric vehicle (BEV) concept based on a small fixed and a big swappable li-ion battery pack is proposed in order to achieve: longer range, lower initial purchase price and lower energy consumption at short ranges. For short ranges the BEV is only powered by the relatively small fixed battery pack, without the large swappable battery pack. In this way the mass of the vehicle is reduced and therefore the energy consumed per unit distance is improved. For higher ranges the BEV is powered by both battery packs. This concept allows the introduction of subscription-based ownership models to distribute the cost of the large battery pack over the vehicle lifetime. A methodology is proposed for the analysis and evaluation of the proposed concept in comparison with a direct owned non swappable single pack BEV, proving that significant improvements on city fuel economy (up to 20 %) and economic benefits are achievable under several scenarios. These results encourage further study of battery swapping service plans and energy management strategies.

During many years, battery models have been proposed with different levels of accuracy and complexity. In some cases, simple low-order aggregated battery pack models may be more appropriate and feasible than complex physic-chemical or high-order multi-cell battery pack models. For example: in early stages of the system design process, in non-focused battery applications, or whenever low configuration effort or low computational complexity is a requirement. The latter may be the case of Electrical Equivalent Circuit Models (EECM) suitable for energy optimization purposes at a system level in the context of energy management or sizing problem of energy storage systems. In this paper, an improved parametrization method for Li-ion linear static EECMs based on the so called concept of direct current resistance (DCR) is presented. By drawing on a DCR-based parametrization, the influence of both diffusion polarization effects and changing of Open-Circuit Voltage (OCV) are virtually excluded on the estimation of the battery's inner resistance. This results in a parametrization that only accounts for pure ohmic and charge transfer effects, which may be beneficial, since these effects dominate the battery dynamic power response in the range of interest of many applications, including electro-mobility. Model validation and performance evaluation is achieved in simulations by comparison with other low and high order EECM battery models over a dynamic driving profile. Significant improvements in terms of terminal voltage and power losses estimation may be achieved by a DCR-based parametrization, which in its simplest form may only require one short pulse characterization test within a relatively wide range of SoCs and currents. Experimental data from a 53 Ah Li-ion pouch cell produced by Kokam (Type SLPB 120216216) with Nickel Manganese Cobalt oxide (NMC) cathode material is used.

Boilers based on combustion of biomass become widely used as a heating source nowadays. The modern ones are typically controlled automatically. The control algorithm of those boilers is crucial in reaching optimal operational conditions by means of maximal efficiency and minimal environmental impact. On the other hand, the acquisition costs of these advanced devices should be maintained at reasonable level. This paper deals with implementation of modern proper control algorithm and obtaining the necessary input values that cannot be easily measured operationally by a direct measurement. © IFAC.

This paper presents the results of an experimental evaluation of elastomeric mounts used to isolate vibration from a block (representing a powertrain) to a structure test rig (representing a vehicle structure). Four types of elastomeric mounts were considered, where three of them are from green material natural rubber (SMR CV60, ENR50 and DPNR) and one from petroleum based synthetic rubber (EPDM). Measurement of the dynamic stiffness and loss factor of these elastomers were initially performed. Dynamic stiffness and loss factor were measured in the axial direction for a range of frequency between 5 Hz and 150 Hz at with a dynamic amplitude of 0.2 mm (p-p). Shaker excitation using random vibration signal in the frequency range of 10 Hz to 150 Hz at constant force magnitude was applied to the block in order to quantity the effectiveness of the elastomeric mounts. Measured vibration amplitudes in the axial direction on both sides of each mount were used to calculate the transmissibility and vibration power flow. Sound radiation from a plate attached to the structure test rig was also measured to evaluate the elastomeric mounts contribution to structure-borne noise. The results from transmissibility showed that vibration was high on EPDM, particularly in the ranges 25 to 35 Hz, 60 to 80 Hz and 100 to 120 Hz. ENR50 ability to reduce or damped the amplitude at resonance was found to be the best as compared to the other elastomers. The total vibration power flow was observed to be highest on ENR50 followed by EPDM. The high transmissibility on EPDM was due to its high dynamic stiffness and low loss factor. The larger total vibration power flow on ENR50 was attributed to its high dynamic stiffness and high loss factor.

This paper proposes a method for computing a polyhedral invariant set of linear parameter varying systems in the presence of input and state constraints. The main idea is to add iteratively additional constraints until invariance is obtained. In order to deal with the specif c non-convex structure of the one-step state prediction tubes arising in LPV contexts, a convexif cation procedure is used.

Generally, there exist voltage differences between the voltage commands and the output voltages of the three-phase pulse-width modulated (PWM) voltage-source inverter (VSI), which are caused by the intended dead-time to prevent the armshort of a leg and the nonlinearities of switching devices. These voltage differences (or voltage distortion) affect the current distortion, torque pulsations, and degradation of control performances. To overcome these drawbacks, a simple and low-cost observation and compensation method of the voltage distortion is proposed. The proposed method is employing model reference adaptive system (MRAS) techniques and does not require any additional hardware circuits such as voltage sensors. The voltage distortions caused by the nonlinearities of the switching devices are estimated by a voltage distortion observer which is based on the electrical model of the PMSM. And the estimated voltage distortions are fed-forward to compensate the voltage commands. In comparison with the previous existing methods, the proposed method has a simple structure and good performances. Also, it can be implemented without any extra devices such as voltage sensors and the computing effort is very small. The execution of the algorithm can be easily embedded in the existing systems without major modification. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, the experiments are carried out for the digitally controlled PMSM drive system. The experimental results verify the validity of the proposed method and show that the proposed method gives good performance and practical value. © 2014 WIT Press.
