Many PID controller tuning methods have been presented since Ziegler and Nichols published their method in 1942, but none of those methods were used widely. The Ziegler and Nichols method has several advantages over newer methods: it is easy to conduct, the relations for controller parameter computation are simple, the method relies on experiment, and it does not require any model. Newer tuning methods are usually model-based, but the model-free methods are preferred in common industrial practice. This paper presents a model-free tuning method that respects the "restrictions" given by the easy usage of the Ziegler and Nichols method. The method is model-free, and new controller parameter computation is based on evaluation of control quality indicators. The evaluation is done without disconnection of the controller and with no other control restrictions during control.

A hybrid gas sensor based on infrared absorption has been developed for indoor air quality monitoring. The sensor is used to measure the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) to 1 part per million (ppm) level in indoor environment. Photoresistor PbSe was used as a sensor in order to measure two gases at the spectrum absorption band of 4.3 µm and 4.6 µm due to CO2 and CO molecules in the air respectively. The infrared lights are emitted by two light emitting diodes (LEDs). These light sources are much smaller, high speed, with low power consumption and does not need optical filters. The design of the prototype sensor system and results are presented in this work. © 2012 Newswood Limited. All rights reserved.

There are many types of controllers and various methods for their tuning. It is not possible to explain the principles of all of them to students. Usually, PID controller and the Ziegler-Nichols methods are taught at universities and then some other one or two other types of control, if they are practiced and not only briefly mentioned. The theoretical principles and approaches are mainly explained without details about implementation that sometimes needs special procedures. Several problems that should be more focused in control engineering education on are presented in the paper. © 2012 IFAC.

We present an improvement of forward collision warning (FCW) by adding more layers of warning functionality based on five stages of crash timeline. Generally, FCW operates at stage 3, the critical moment before crash. The added functionality is the location-based warning (LW) which warns the driver when driving toward a dangerous spot with high speed. LW operates at stage 2, an open condition to crash which comes from bad driving habit. We propose the use of warning lag time as a performance indicator, which is appropriate for real driving experiment. The warning lag time is defined as the time period between the issue of warning and the execution of brake by a normal driver. We performed real driving experiments with normal drivers and compare their brake actions with warnings from our system. The system with FCW alone achieved an average time lag of 1.47 sec., while the system with both FCW+LW can warn the driver faster with average time lag of 1.32 sec. The accuracy of both systems was about the same at 79%. © 2012 IEEE.

NIR spectroscopy can be used to measure the amylose content in rough rice, brown rice and milled rice. From the investigation in this research, if the amylose content is high in the rice, the rate of digestion, glucose absorption is slow and it can reduce insulin responses. So, diabetics patient can start practice to have a proper diet by choosing rice with high amylose content such us Basmati rice and brown rice. © 2012 IEEE.

The quality of meat in consumer perception is affected by the most important factor which is tenderness. Traditionally, the meat quality grading is done destructively by the human graders and also using destructive measurements that will destroy the samples. Destructive measurement also caused less-accurate results, time-consuming and high cost. Therefore, a low cost, fast, reliable and non-destructive technique which is The Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) is required in order to gain accurate results in tenderness prediction. This NIRS will then be able to improve the agricultural industries in meat quality grading. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper presents a design of an experimental micro-turbine power generator for combined electrical energy and heat production. The generator is composed of an automotive turbocharger and a high speed permanent magnet synchronous motor. The generator parameters are 40 000 RPM, torque 7 Nm. The control system is presented as well as the control algorithm. Some test results obtained during initial workbench testing with unloaded motor are shown. © 2012 IEEE.

With the recent advances in power electronic technology, the increase of non-linear loads such as power converters has deteriorated power quality and sparked the research in power quality issue. Shunt Active filter(SAF) is a power electronic device developed to improve power quality. Proportional-resonant(PR) type controller appears to be appropriate for the control system in active filters, where the precise tracking performance of harmonic currents is required. However, due to the complexity of the controller structure, to obtain suitable controller parameters, it requires considerable design effort in particular for a non-expert. This paper presents an automated design procedure to optimize a modified proportional-multiple resonant controller for the compensation of all main order harmonics, the 5th,7th,11th,13th,17th and 19th harmonics. The principle of the proposed control method and the optimization procedure based on genetic algorithms are described in detail The excellent control performance has been carried out by simulations.

Precise control of electro-hydraulic actuator (EHA) system has been an interesting subject due to its nonlinearities and uncertainties characteristics. Good control can be designed when precise model of the system is available. ANFIS (Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference system) modeling technique has proven to be able to model various nonlinear systems. The objective of this paper is to obtain an ANFIS model from EHA system stimulus-response data. The prediction ability of ANFIS is also tested using limited data set for model training. Results show that ANFIS model is able to estimate nonlinear EHA system with high precision, even when training data provided is limited. © 2012 IEEE.
