Differential passivity of a nonlinear system has been introduced as passivity of its variational system. Applying standard passivity-based control techniques to differentially passive systems leads to controllers for the corresponding variational systems. However, it is challenging to construct controllers for the original nonlinear systems if the differential passive outputs are non-exact differential one-forms. In this letter, our objective is to provide a systematic procedure to address this issue when differential passive outputs are integrable, i.e., when non-exact differential passive outputs can be made exact by multiplying them by suitable integrating factors. In particular, under suitable detectability assumptions, we propose one static and two dynamic state feedback stabilizing controllers, where each dynamic controller has a form of input-and output-shaping, respectively. We illustrate their effectiveness by stabilization of counter-current heat exchangers.

In-hand manipulation, or dexterous manipulation, is one of the most complex challenges in robotics as it requires the accurate coordination of multiple degrees of freedom. While several solutions have been presented for fully actuated hands, less work has focused on underactuated grippers. Synergies can be interpreted as a method for coupling joint motions, constraining the hand's degrees of freedom, and thereby reducing the number of control inputs. In this paper, we propose a model predictive control scheme (MPC) that integrates synergies to implement dexterous in-hand manipulation with robotic hands. In the MPC formulation, synergies can either be considered as constraints on the joint variables or are directly inserted in the system function with a reallocation of the input variables acting on the joints. Through several sets of simulations we compare these two approaches and show their main features.

Motivated by the inadequacy of conventional control methods for power networks with a large share of renewable generation, in this paper we study the (stochastic) passivity property of wind turbines based on the Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG). Differently from the majority of the results in the literature, where renewable generation is ignored or assumed to be constant, we model wind power generation as a stochastic process, where wind speed is described by a class of stochastic differential equations. Then, we design a distributed control scheme that achieves load frequency control and economic dispatch, ensuring the stochastic stability of the controlled network. © 2021 EUCA.

Most vision-based pedestrian detection systems adopted deep learning approaches with the framework of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to reach the state-of-the-art detection accuracy. As CNN-based approaches are computationally intensive, the deployment of those systems to a resource-limited edge device is a challenging task, especially for a real-time application such as intelligent vehicles. In this study, we proposed a lightweight high-performance edge computing solution to achieve rapid and accurate performance in pedestrian detection. Experimental results showed that the proposed framework can effectively reduce the miss rate of the YOLO-tiny detection model from 48.8% to 26.2% while achieving an inference speed of 31 frames per second (FPS) tested on the Caltech pedestrian dataset. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.

In this paper, the cascaded voltage and power control is proposed to expand the output voltage range for full-bridge-fed CLLC resonant converter. In first, the CLLC resonant circuit is analyzed based on pulse frequency modulation (PFM) and pulse width modulation (PWM). The output voltage is sensed and the power is calculated to tune the switching period to achieve the wide output range. A 3.0kW prototype circuit is implemented to demonstrate the proposed control.

In industrial settings, querying data streams from Internet of Things (IoT) devices benefits from utilizing elastic criteria to enhance the interpretability of the current state of the monitored environment. Fuzzy sets provide this elasticity, enabling the aggregation and representation of similar values in a human-comprehensible manner. However, many sensor signals exhibit temporal oscillations, leading to varying interpretations of the signal based on its current trend (rising or falling). This hysteresis in signal (and subsequently of the production device) interpretation inspired us to introduce this phenomenon into data stream processing, resulting in the novel concept of hysteretic fuzzy sets. This article demonstrates how fuzzy searching and grouping can be applied to IoT sensor signals in flexible Big Data stream processing on Apache Kafka. We illustrate the impact of data stream querying with KSQL queries involving fuzzy sets (encompassing fuzzy filtering of data stream events, fuzzy transformation of data stream attributes, fuzzy grouping, and joining) on the flexibility of executed operations and computational resources utilized by the Kafka processing engine. Finally, our experiments with hysteretic fuzzy sets while analyzing sensor signals in power plants demonstrate that this novel approach effectively reduces the number of alarms while monitoring the state of the production machine.

In this study, a low-cost wireless industrial system is designed and implemented in a local pharmaceutical factory for monitoring and control. ESP8266 modules were utilized to establish wireless communication among various input and output devices in the factory. The master-slave (i.e., server-client) technology using ESP8266 modules was adopted for the communication topology where all clients can be connected to various types of sensors (e.g., to measure variables such as temperature, humidity, and pressure) and outputs (e.g., relays, lights, and output devices) for control purposes. It is in fact a simplified SCADA system implemented using low-cost WiFi microchips for monitoring and control. In addition, an HTML webpage was designed as a GUI for monitoring the sensors' measurements and manually controlling some output devices that are distributed normally in factories. Moreover, a data logger was also designed and implemented using Google Sheets for mainly saving the data (i.e., measurement of real-time parameter variations) and for generating informative reports for users and management.
