In this paper, a Lagrangian relaxation approach to the problem of minimization of the total weighted tardiness is presented. The approach can be used both to solve the original problem as well as to obtain a high-quality lower bound for the branch-and-bound method. The problem was further decomposed into upper and lower problems. For the upper problem, an approach using a local-search metaheuristic is proposed instead of a subgradient method from the literature. Several variants of both methods are then implemented and compared through a numerical example using OR library problem instances. The results prove the viability of the metaheuristic approach as with little calibration it is able to match or outperform a refined subgradient method. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In this study, a low-cost wireless industrial system is designed and implemented in a local pharmaceutical factory for monitoring and control. ESP8266 modules were utilized to establish wireless communication among various input and output devices in the factory. The master-slave (i.e., server-client) technology using ESP8266 modules was adopted for the communication topology where all clients can be connected to various types of sensors (e.g., to measure variables such as temperature, humidity, and pressure) and outputs (e.g., relays, lights, and output devices) for control purposes. It is in fact a simplified SCADA system implemented using low-cost WiFi microchips for monitoring and control. In addition, an HTML webpage was designed as a GUI for monitoring the sensors' measurements and manually controlling some output devices that are distributed normally in factories. Moreover, a data logger was also designed and implemented using Google Sheets for mainly saving the data (i.e., measurement of real-time parameter variations) and for generating informative reports for users and management. © 2023 IEEE.

The shape of the wavefront is important for the most realistic reproduction of the acoustic wave. In acoustics, the wave front (or wave surface) is defined as the totality of points in the space of the propagating medium that have the same instantaneous elongation amplitude. In the ideal case, in a homogeneous and isotropic propagation medium without other disturbances, the wave has a spherical symmetry, i.e. the shape of the wavefront is circular and at large distances from the wave source, due to dispersion, the shape of the wavefront can be considered plan. In practice, however, due to the multiple component harmonics, reflections and possible summations of the primary acoustic wave, the elongation has a non-sinusoidal shape, and the wavefront may have an irregular random shape. Moreover, if the source of the wave or bodies from which it is reflected are in motion, the shape of the wavefront may even be variable in time. The paper presents a method for determining the shape of the wave front of a non-sinusoidal periodic plane acoustic wave, resulting from the addition of several harmonic components, reflected waves, etc. It uses an array of omnidirectional capacitive microphones arranged in line, at equal distances between them. At each of the microphones, the acoustic wave is captured out of phase depending on the position of the microphone in space and the shape of the wave front. These phase shifts placed next to each other give an image of the shape of the wavefront captured by the microphone system. The method presented in this paper reproduces sounds very realistically and can be used in Active Noise Cancel systems, in open spaces, with one or more mobile noise sources. One of the benefits is the increase in hearing comfort in noisy environments. Another is to record sounds with high fidelity.

Electrical discharge machining (EDM) has been extensively utilized in the precision manufacturing of difficult-to-cut material. The preparation of electrodes is of great importance for structured surface generation after EDM. Electrode wear is an inevitable problem, which affects the machining accuracy and efficiency of the workpiece. Therefore, the design and optimization of the electrodes are vital for the EDM process. In this paper, a novel self-assembly ball electrode for EDM of the structured array on the binderless tungsten carbide (WC) is proposed. The shape evolution and surface roughness of the structured surface was investigated. The result indicates that self-assembly ball electrodes have a great advantage in machining the structured surface arrays. © 2023 Proceedings - ASPE 2023 Annual Meeting. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we propose a radar odometry structure that directly utilizes radar velocity measurements for dead reckoning while maintaining its ability to update estimations within the Kalman filter framework. Specifically, we employ the Doppler velocity obtained by a 4D Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar in conjunction with gyroscope data to calculate poses. This approach helps mitigate high drift resulting from accelerometer biases and double integration. Instead, tilt angles measured by gravitational force are utilized alongside relative distance measurements from radar scan matching for the filter’s measurement update. Additionally, to further enhance the system’s accuracy, we estimate and compensate for the radar velocity scale factor. The performance of the proposed method is verified through five real-world open-source datasets. The results demonstrate that our approach reduces position error by 62% and rotation error by 66% on average compared to the state-of-the-art radar-inertial fusion method in terms of absolute trajectory error.

This work proposes a novel architecture for constructing remote laboratories, employing modular building blocks: Matlab/Simulink software for control system design and simulation, WebSocket communication technology for continuous data exchange, and a front-end application developed using the Angular framework. To facilitate WebSocket communication on the Matlab server side, the MatlabWebSocket library is implemented. Beyond the Angular framework, interactivity within the remote laboratory is further enhanced through 3D visualization of the controlled system using a *** based library. These combined technologies are applied in the development of a remote laboratory for a fast, unstable, and nonlinear magnetic levitation system. The laboratory allows users to remotely set desired values and control parameters for experiments, while also providing continuous data visualization in various forms, including numerical readouts, graphs, and 3D animations. This approach demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed architecture for building remote laboratories for complex systems.

In variational quantum algorithms (VQAs), the most common objective is to find the minimum energy eigenstate of a given energy Hamiltonian. In this paper, we consider the general problem of finding a sufficient control Hamiltonian structure that, under a given feedback control law, ensures convergence to the minimum energy eigenstate of a given energy function. By including quantum non-demolition (QND) measurements in the loop, convergence to a pure state can be ensured from an arbitrary mixed initial state. Based on existing results on strict control Lyapunov functions, we formulate a semidefinite optimization problem, whose solution defines a non-unique control Hamiltonian, which is sufficient to ensure almost sure convergence to the minimum energy eigenstate under the given feedback law and the action of QND measurements. A numerical example is provided to showcase the proposed methodology. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

Two-axis gimbals are used in stabilizing and controlling the aiming of optical systems. The main task is to isolate the angular motion of the payload and the disturbances affecting the optical axis of the camera while maintaining the camera’s orientation locked onto the target. Currently, two commonly used gimbal structures are the Yaw-Pitch type and the Roll-Swing type. In this paper, we delve into an in-depth study to develop the full mathematical models for both types, thereby analyzing and evaluating the influence of the cross-channel noise moment effects caused by gimbal imbalance on the stability and aiming control quality under complex angular motion conditions of the payload. Simulation results conducted using MATLAB/SIMULINK with the two-axis gimbal model demonstrate that employing a robust control system significantly reduces the impact of disturbances and enhances the quality of control and stability of the transmission system.
