A delivery route optimization system greatly improves the real time delivery efficiency. To realize such an optimization, its distribution network requires solving several tens to hundreds (max. 1500-2000) cities Traveling Salesman Problems (TSP) within interactive response time (around 3 seconds) with expert-level accuracy (below 3% level of error rate). Moreover, as for the algorithms, understandability and flexibility are necessary because field experts and field engineers can understand and adjust it to satisfy the field conditions. To meet these requirements, a Backtrack and Restart Genetic Algorithm (Br-GA) is proposed. This method combines Backtracking and GA having simple heuristics such as 2-opt and NI (Nearest Insertion) so that, in case of stagflation, GA can restarts with the state of populations going back to the state in the generation before stagflation. Including these heuristics, field experts and field engineers can easily understand the way and use it. Using the tool applying their method, they can easily create/modify the solutions or conditions interactively depending on their field needs. Experimental results proved that the method meets the above-mentioned delivery scheduling requirements more than other methods from the viewpoint of optimality as well as simplicity.

Delivery route optimization greatly improves the delivery efficiency in terms of all resources including human resources and energy consumption. In our application scenario the distribution network requires solving several tens to hundreds (max. 1500-2000) cities Traveling Salesman Problems (TSP) within interactive response time (around 3 seconds) with expert-level accuracy (below 3% level of error rate). Moreover, since domain experts have to adjust the solutions due to boundary conditions that can not be formally expressed (such as human convenience, road conditions, and social aspects), understandability and flexibility of the applied heuristics are necessary. To meet all these requirements, a Backtrack and Restart Genetic Algorithm (Br-GA) was proposed. This method combines Backtracking and GA having simple heuristics such as 2-opt and NI (Nearest Insertion) so that, in case of stagflation, GA can restarts with the state of populations going back to the state in the generation before stagflation. Here, a refinement of this algorithm is introduced, which aims at ensuring diversity of initial solutions, which are subject to mutation. We introduce a formal definition of a diversity degree as well as a technique to compose new random individuals, which follow a required degree of diversity.

Driving frequency, amplitude and phase difference of two-phase sinusoidal voltages are the input parameters which have influence on speed stability of travelling wave ultrasonic motors (TWUSMs).These parameters are also time-varying due to the variations in operating temperature. In addition, a complete mathematical model of the TWUSM has not been derived yet. Owing to these reasons, a machine learning approach is required for determining the compatibility of operating parameters related to speed stability of TWUSMs. For this purpose, an intelligent decision support tool has been designed for TWUSMs in this study. The input parameters such as driving frequency, amplitude, phase difference of two-phase sinusoidal voltages and operating temperature were evaluated by the k-nearest neighbor algorithm in the decision support tool. The results have shown that the proposed tool provides effective results in the compatibility determination of operating parameters related to speed stability of TWUSMs.

Gram-negative bacteria have five major subcellular localization sites: the cytoplasm, the extracell, the inner membrane, the outer membrane and the periplasm. The subcellular localization of a protein can provide valuable information about its function. In this paper, we present a novel approach to predict subcellular localization for Gram-negative bacteria. This method uses the principal component analysis (PCA) to extract key protein features based on the pseudo amino acid composition (PseAAC). Experimental results show that our method has superior prediction performance by the five-fold cross-validation test and the independent dataset test. Because of its simplicity, this approach can be easily extended to other organisms and should be a useful tool for the large-scale analysis of proteomic and genomic data. ICIC International © 2011.

Virtual machines are allocated on demand in virtualized cloud platforms to provide flexible and reliable services. The major difficulty lies in satisfying the conflicting objectives of reducing response time while lowering resource costs. In this paper, a mathematical multi-tier framework for virtual machine allocation is proposed, which can be used to capture the performance of the cloud platform. We first use simulations to derive virtual resource allocation policies, and later use real benchmarking applications to verify the effectiveness of this framework. Experimental results show that the model can be simply and effectively used to satisfy the response time requirement as well as lowering the cost of using the virtual machine resources.

This paper aims to address the robust convergence problem that arises from discrete-time iterative learning control (ILC) systems subject to random disturbances. Two alternative approaches are considered in order to achieve the perfect output tracking of the stochastic discrete-time ILC systems in the sense of both expectation and variance, which use the tracking error and the input error for analysis, respectively. It is shown that the convergence results of two approaches to ILC can be established by developing some statistical expressions in super-vector forms. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the convergence results of two approaches to ILC are not always equal, and they can keep the same only in the case where the controlled plants are square.

This paper is concerned with the column formation control of multi-robot systems that are subject to input constraints. A new leader-follower setup is proposed, under which the Lyapunov method can provide a simple controller in terms of two feedback parameters. It is shown that using an elliptic approximation to input constraints, the two feedback parameters can be obtained directly with a geometric analysis method. Moreover, a sufficient condition is presented for the leader robot to guarantee that the desired column formation can be achieved, with which a particular controller is designed by selecting two appropriate functions for the feedback parameters. Simulation results are included to verify the effectiveness of the proposed theoretical results.

This paper deals with the active collision avoidance maneuver for the chaser along the specified trajectory, and presents a maneuver approach with constant thrust. Using the 3D stereo vision measurement, The relative position parameters of the target spacecraft for analyzing the collision possibility are obtained by using the vision measurement and the target maneuver positions are calculated through the equidistance interpolation method. The working times of thrusters in three axes can be respectively computed by the time series analysis method. In particular, the perturbation and fuel consumption are addressed during the computation of working time. Furthermore, the acceleration sequences and the corresponding working time series can be employed to determine a switching control law for the active collision avoidance maneuver. The simulation results show that the switch control law can effectively guarantee the chaser moving along the specified trajectory.

Robust L_(2) - L_(infinity) consensus control is studied for the second-order multi-agent systems with external disturbances and parameter uncertainties. By defining an appropriate controlled output, the consensus problem of the systems is transformed into a normal L_(2) - L_(infinity) control problem, and distributed state feedback protocols with time-delay are proposed. Sufficient conditions are established for the convergence to consensus of the network under fixed or switching topology. Numerical simulations are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of our theoretical results.

This paper addresses the problem of tracking multiple maneuvering extended targets in the framework of random finite set theory. An elliptical model is adopted for exploiting sensor measurements of target extent, and the target dynamics is described by a jump Markov linear system which combines the shape parameters into the kinematic state vector. As each extended target gives rise to unlabeled multiple measurements per time step, all the received measurements are partitioned into a number of subsets so that the measurements in each subset are expected to stem from the same source. In addition, the best-fitting Gaussian approximation approach is employed to circumvent the difficulty of multiple model mixing in the Gaussian mixture probability hypothesis density (GM-PHD) filter. A numerical example is provided to compare the performance of the proposed filter with that of the GM-PHD filter without measurement partition.
