Sivashankar During the summer of 1993 he was a visiting scholar in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics Naval Postgraduate School Monterey CA where he worked on control systems for unmanned aerial vehicles. From 1993 to 2000 he was with Ford Research Laboratory working on several design aspects of powertrain control systems and processes for embedded control software development. He is currently the Vice President for Technology at Emmeskay Incorporated a company that provides systems engineering based products and services. His research interests include modeling and control of automotive systems application of systems engineering methods and tools to product development processes and multivariable robust control and estimation methods. Dr. Sivashankar has served as an associate editor for the ASME Journal of Dynamic Systems Measurement and Control.

With the increase in automotive powertrain complexity, an upfront assessment of powertrain capability in meeting its design targets is important early on in the development programs. The optimization of control policy based on powertrain simulation models can facilitate this assessment and establish limits of achievable performance for a given powertrain configuration and parameters. The paper discusses several computational optimization and user interface solutions for deploying a numerical optimal control approach in a user-friendly software environment.

In semiconductor packaging applications, e.g., wire bonding, high speed and high precision are two core requirements. Five-bar linkages are good candidates for 2-DoF (degree of freedom) semiconductor manipulation because of its parallel topology and therefore its potential for high speed and high precision. In order to find the best five-bar structure, the workspace volume index (WVI), the ratio of workspace volume to machine envelop size, is proposed as a measure for kinematic performance. Optimal design problems are formulated by regarding WVI as the objective function and other requirements on dexterity and singularitylessness as the constraints. Based on the design formulation, two candidate manipulators, the 5-R and PRRRP manipulators are compared with respect to WVI, kinematic accuracy, stiffness and velocity transmission, etc.

A model-based robust control design approach for a novel direct-drive planar parallel manipulator aimed at high speed and high precision semiconductor packaging application is *** experimental identification approach is proposed to determine the dynamic model of the manipulator and a robust feedback controller is designed in the frequency-domain using genetic *** results demonstrate that the motion performance of the planar parallel manipulator including positioning accttracy,settling time and steady- state error is improved significantly when compared with traditional XY *** shows that the proposed planar manipulator provides a superior alternative to the traditional XY stages for high- precision motion.

Windows operating systems (NT, 2000, XP, 2003) were not designed for real-time and time-critical applications. But, due to the market requirements, many of the monitoring and control applications are to use Windows NT based operating systems. One of the most important parameter in almost all applications is temperature. Therefore, this article addresses the problem of temperature monitoring using a non real-time operating system, like Windows. A number of three solutions for thermal sensors connecting to PC's interfaces are presented. © 2005 IEEE.

A Printed Circuit Board (PCB) testing method using infrared thermal signatures is presented. The concept of thermal signature for PCBs is introduced. Based on this concept, the testing method is able to classify the integrated circuits (ICs) on a PCB into a number of classes (e.g. functional - fault free, non-functional - faulty and less reliable - functional circuits with high current consumption). According with thermal signature of each IC on the PCB, the PCBs can be also classified in the same number of classes. The classification system is a feed-forward neural network that learns and classifies the information achieved from the infrared image. © 2005 IEEE.

Existing applications do not satisfy Asset Management. Geospatial Information Systems (GIS), in part, perform static inventory management of power delivery assets, i.e., location of the asset and nameplate data but not dynamic performance or availability. Maintenance Management systems retain the history of maintenance tasks performed on equipment and predict when new tasks should be performed but do not understand return on investment (ROI) to plan replacement. Work Management Systems help schedule resources to perform maintenance, replacement, or operational tasks only after they have been identified elsewhere. So in essence, true Asset Management is overlooked. The success of these applications should rely heavily on timely and accurate data. Real-time and historical operating data are essential for identifying and improving dynamic performance optimization, for outage management and avoidance, and for planning obsolescence and expansion. This paper addresses overlooked asset management needs of determining and improving the health, reliability, ROI, and performance of apparatus and systems, and hopes to provide a better understanding of how to consider benefits or losses the utility experiences.

Common engineering approaches and modelling approaches from software engineering are brought together. For the domain of process automation, i.e. product and plant automation, an implementation oriented approach for an object oriented software development for heterogeneous distributed systems is introduced. Model elements for control are added to UML as well as small-scale patterns for plant automation. Besides large-scale patterns are introduced as well as implementational models. The adoption of UML regarding applied diagrams and stereotypes for process automation will be introduced and structured components, an idiom for product automation software development, will be compared to other software engineering notations. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

We developed the object-oriented engineering tool for application programming of the controller based on the international standard IEC 61131-3 to improve software productivity. To realize continuity and translatability from conventional register-based programming, functions which complement and extend the international standard IEC 61131-3 were added by our unique and proper technologies. An engineering environment for easy software reusing was also realized.

Is combined sewer overflow spill frequency/volume a good indicator of receiving water quality impact?

It is often assumed that the frequency or volume of combined sewer overflow (CSO) spill is a good indicator of receiving water pollution impact. Whilst this assumption would appear to be true, recently there have been challenges to its veracity. To test this basic premise, an integrated model (SYNOPSIS) has been applied to the urban wastewater system of a semi-hypothetical catchment. By increasing the storage volume at a single downstream tank in the drainage system, the CSO spill frequency and volume was reduced. River water quality criteria, based on UPM standards, were calculated and related to spill frequency and volume over a series of long-term simulation runs. It was found that, up to certain storage volume levels, decreasing overflow frequency improved river DO and BOD and total ammonia. Beyond these volumes, however, there was no further improvement in DO/BOD and an increase in total ammonia. It is concluded that overflow frequency/volume can be used as a performance indicator for receiving water quality, provided its significant limitations are understood. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd.
