Solar photovoltaic (PV) arrays experience a significant surge in power losses due to Partially Shaded Conditions (PSCs). The presence of clouds, shadows from tall structures, trees, chimneys, and bird droppings can lead to these PSCs. When PV modules are shaded, they go into reverse bias, causing small hotspots to form and increase the system's overall temperature. To mitigate this issue, bypass diodes can be connected antiparallel to the PV modules, although this leads to multiple peaks in the I-V and P-V characteristics. Along with the challenges presented by hotspots, mismatch losses between different modules further, reduce the electricity output of a PV array. The research in focus is designed to evaluate, model, simulate, and analyze the effectiveness of several 4x4 PV array configurations operating under diverse PSCs. Topologies such as series-parallel, bridge-link, honeycomb, and total cross-tied (TCT) are investigated, along with different partial shading patterns like corners, centers, ends, L-shapes, frames, random, and diagonals. These investigations are grounded on the technical specifications of a 130-watt PV module.

This paper presents a planning framework for discrete planning of human operations in highly automated industrial plants, where manual and automatic control coexist. Based solely on qualitative knowledge of the controlled continuous process represented through signed directed graphs, the planner exploits a greedy algorithm to determine the optimal action for the human operator upon changes in the process' operating conditions or reconfiguration of the control system due to faulty conditions. The planner results in a decision support tool that instructs the human operator on the best course of action. The planning framework and the resulting planner are demonstrated on a quadruple-tank system. © 2021 EUCA.

The study investigates the challenges posed by" partial shading conditions" (PSCs) on a performance and efficiency of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. The primary goal is to find the best photovoltaic array setup to optimize power output while reducing efficiency losses caused by mismatching. The researchers evaluate various PV configurations such as Series (S), Series-Parallel (SP), Total Cross Tied (TCT), Bridge Linked (BL), Honey Comb (HC), and a hybrid of TCT and BL called TCT-BL, focusing on a 4x4 array layout. Six different shading patterns are examined, including diagonal, "short and narrow", "short and wide", "long and narrow", "long and wide", and random. Based on simulations using Matlab/Simulink and a 130W PV module model, the study suggests that the TCT-BL configuration offers superior power generation, efficiency, and reduced mismatching loss compared to other configurations under most PSCs examined.

This paper presents a congestion detection system for routers in Network-on-Chip (NoC) architectures based on fuzzy logic methods. The system uses the average buffer occupancy of routers, the packet injection rate (PIR), and the betweenness centrality (BC) metric as input parameters. The proposed method enables the prediction of router congestion probabilities. The paper also constructs network congestion heatmaps for various PIR values. The conducted studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach for early congestion detection, opening opportunities for dynamic traffic management and adaptive routing protocol optimization in NoC systems.

A literature review showed that the causes of accidents frequently occuring at rolling mills are fatigue failures of spindle heads or necks of mill rollers. This confirms the relevance of developing the systems for monitoring the wear degree of the spindle joint components directly during the rolling process. This is relevant for thick plate rolling mills operating under shock load application. As a diagnostic feature, it is proposed to use pressure in hydraulic cylinders of spindle vertical balancing. It has been experimentally proved that the process of fatigue failure development increases such pressure;that is why it is an informative criterion in terms of defect growth. The observer structure is proposed;at the observer output the variable pressure component is restored, and an emergency signal is generated. The algorithm for virtual observer configuration is implemented in the Matlab Simulink package. The proposed algorithm has been implemented in pilot operation on a thick plate mill 5000. The authors give an example of a pre-emergency situation on-line monitoring. The timely emergency warning has been registered and confirmed which proves the technical and economic efficiency of the observer adoption. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents an original theoretical and implementation framework of fractional order event-based control with the purpose of quality improvement at the end production line of a continuous casting process. A real-life steel manufacturing plant is taken into consideration in the study. A prior fractional order model is considered to tune a fractional order Proportional Integral controller that ensures an ideal flow velocity of liquid steel. A novel event-based fractional order methodology is proposed that uses internal and external process events in order to improve quality. The implementation strategy takes into consideration available software and hardware components at the plant site, offering a realistic and implementable solution, highly suitable for the current steel industry setting. Numeric simulations successfully validate the proposed methodology. © 2023 IEEE.

Process monitoring of operation cost index (OCI) is of great importance for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which is not only able to support financial budget, but also to optimize local operation. This paper proposed four variants of auto-regressive and moving average (ARMA), based on recursive least squares algorithm (RLS), ARMA based on recursive extended least squares algorithm (RELS), nonlinear auto-regressive neural network (NARNN), and nonlinear auto-regressive neural network with external input (NARXNN) respectively, to predict the operating cost in WWTPs. The proposed methods were validated in the simulation platform, Benchmark Simulation Model No.2-P (BSM2-P). On account of the strong nonlinearity of the wastewater treatment process, the nonlinear model, like NARXNN, achieved better performance in terms of mean square error (MSE) and correlation coefficient (R). © 2022 IEEE.

This paper deals with the magnet position estimation based on the measurements from multiple Hall sensors. Estimation of the position is obtained from trained artificial neural networks. Data are gathered using a custom sensor board that has eight three-axis Hall sensors on it, and correlation between magnetic field and position was determined to be able to estimate position in X and Y directions. First measurements were made to determine the optimal height of the magnet for later data gathering. The outcome of the research was evaluated by comparing the ground truth with the estimated values of the best-trained network to determine the error of estimation. Precise measurement of the position of the magnet is intended to be used for the development of a tactile sensor that estimates the contact force through the displacement of the magnet in the deformable layer.

Speed control of PMDC motors finds applications in various industries. For certain structures, the controller of Proportional, Integral and Derivative (PID) is typically the first choice because of its ease of execution and fast tuning. So, all conventional techniques and optimization stochastic for PID controller tuning provide preliminary feasible parameters for, and. This paper uses traditional PID and nonlinear PID to control the speed of the PMDC motor, which is tuned by Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The methodology is demonstrated by performing simulations using the MATLAB tool. The simulation results exhibit that the role of the nonlinear PID based scheme is more robust than the traditional PID controller, as well as the speed, tracked the desired reference rabidly. © 2021 IEEE.

Telecommunication technology is rapidly evolving, accompanied by an increase in service requirements such as higher bandwidth and service accessibility. Transferring data at high speeds and the system performance are second to none. DWDM (Dence Wavelength Division Multiplexing) can be used to meet these requirements, but it is not the only option. Long-distance transmission using DWDM systems often experiences signal degradation, which can degrade the system performance. An EDFA (Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier) can be used to overcome signal degradation. OptiSystem 18.0 is the DWDM link model used in this study, with a DWDM design that uses 48 channels at an average bit rate per channel of 40 Gbps. A channel spacing of 200 GHz was used. At a 50-km SMF (single-mode fiber) length, the system quality increased in terms of power and frequency spacing. With the EDFA amplifier, the linkage is 180 km long, 240 km long, and 300 km long. Changes in laser power of 10 dB were used in the study. According to the results of the analysis, power changes affect the performance of the system. DWDM with a laser power of 10 dB complies with the values of the standards for the Q factor (Quality Factor) and the BER Min Bit Error Rate parameters. The highest Q factor at a distance of 180 km is 47.008 and BER is 0 with a wavelength of 1498.213nm. The highest Q factor at a distance of 240 km is 28.19 and BER is 3.32092 * 10-175 and the wavelength is 1554.134nm. The highest Q factor at a distance of 300 km is 24.9, with BER equal to 3.66154 * 10-138, and the wavelength being 1565.495nm. According to this study, the higher the laser power used, the better the performance of the system.
