In this paper, an approach to detect stator winding short-circuit faults in squirrel-cage induction motors based on Random Forest and Park's Vector is proposed. This is accomplished by scoring the unbalance in the current and voltage waveforms as well as in Park's Vector, both for current and voltage. To score the unbalance in the d-q space, a Principal Component Analysis is applied to Park's Vector and with the first two principal components the eccentricity is calculated, while the first principal component is used to determine the phase in short-circuit. The proposed strategy has been experimentally tested on a special 400-V, 50-Hz, 4-pole, 2.2-kW induction motor with reconfigurable stator windings in which it was possible to emulate different types of inter-turn short-circuits. The results are quite promising, even only using 1-kHz sampling frequency to acquire the current and voltage waveforms in the three phases, and the use of the Fast Fourier Transform is avoided. The developed solution may be used for tele-monitoring of the motor condition and to implement advanced predictive maintenance strategies.

This paper describes the joint effort of the two FP7 EU projects CLERECO and MoRV toward the definition of an extended reliability information exchange format able to manage reliability information for the full system stack, from technology up to the software level. The paper starts from the RIIF language initiative, proposing a set of new features to improve the expression power of the language and to extend it to the software layer of a system. The proposed extended reliability information exchange format named RIIF-2 has the potential to support the development of next generation reliability analysis tools that will help to fully include reliability evaluation into an automated design flow, pushing cross-layer reliability considerations at the same level of importance as area, timing and power consumption when performing design exploration for new products.

We propose 4D modulation with directed detection employing a novel Stokes-Vector Kramers-Kronig transceiver. It shows that employing Stokes vector receiver, transmitted digital carrier and Kramers-Kronig detection offers an effective way to de-rotate polarization multiplexed complex double side band signal without using a local oscillator at receiver. The impact of system parameters and configurations including carrier-to-signal-power ratio, guard band of the digital carrier, oversampling ratio and real MIMO is experimentally investigated. Finally, a record 480 Gb/s data rate over 80 km SSMF is achieved in a 60 Gbaud PDM-16QAM single carrier experiment with a BER below the threshold of 2.0x10-2. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. The rise of collaborative industrial robotics in the past few years is poised to have a significant impact on manufacturing. Many have joined the movement toward developing a more sustainable and affordable collaborative robotic workforce that can safely work alongside humans; perhaps, none more so than Rethink Robotics. This paper provides a performance assessment of Rethink's Baxter research robot: its kinematic precision was compared experimentally to that of a conventional industrial arm utilizing a point-to-point motion test and writing task. In addition, the Denavit-Hartenberg (DH) parameters were determined and verified in order to model the kinematic chains of the robot arms. Finally, the yield of pick and place tasks consistent with the 2015 IEEE Amazon's Picking Challenge were assessed. Results show that while Baxter's precision is limited, its ability to handle common household-size items in semi-structured environments is a great asset.

In this study, the main idea is the development of an autonomous mobile system for dictating text documents via image processing algorithm for blind people. The system is constituted by the Raspberry Pi 2B - the mobile processing unit- and a pair of specially designed glasses with an HD camera and Bluetooth headset. The blind user should hold the book open (two pages) with his hands stretched straight at the level of his eyes; then a calibration procedure takes place in order to capture the best image. Therefore, 1-D signal transformation of the above image is produced in order to filter every text line. Finally, every word of each text line is identified via an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) method and the user hears it via TTS (Text To Speech) procedure.

Rotational speed measurement is a key issue in most industries, either for process control, characterization or fault diagnosis. In electric motor driven systems it can be used, for example, to estimate the motor load or pulley-belt transmission slip. Encoders and resolvers are typically used for continuous speed monitoring, requiring mechanical coupling with the rotating shaft/part. If the speed is to be measured at a given instant or during a few moments, noninvasive contactless optical tachometers can be used, using optical reflection or stroboscopic principles. In most cases, stroboscopic tachometers require no reflective elements/strips in the rotating part. However, if the user wants to continuously measure the speed of a given rotating part during the audit/characterization period, with real-time data logging and without sticking reflective strips or introducing shaft-coupled encoders/resolvers, there is no low-cost commercial solution to perform such task. For example, if the user's aim is to continuously estimate the load variation of an induction motor over a day or week, on the basis of the slip/speed value, it is not possible with conventional commercial low-cost contactless equipment, unless the user uses expensive online-operation equipment estimating the speed by means of input voltage/current. Moreover, in some rotating systems/parts not directly driven by an electric motor, the online equipment cannot be used and it is not practical, and in some cases even impossible, to couple an encoder/resolver or stick some reflective strips. In this paper, an innovative nonintrusive low-cost webcam-based tachometer is proposed, developed and experimentally tested. It can be used to easily estimate and record the speed over time in, for example, electrical motors, pulleys, shafts and wind turbines.

Safety or mission critical systems are those where failures should be avoided at all costs. engineering processes, techniques and tools are, however, not perfect, and lead to software and systems with flaws. This paper presents an analysis of the impact of late found issues versus the fault types for critical aerospace systems. These issues are the indep.ndently detected faults that remain once the engineering processes that are required by European space standards have been applied and the engineering teams have performed their verification and validation activities. This study presents the analysis of the fault impact versus fault type distribution according to the detection phases and to the issues severity/type and presents recommendations to improve space systems engineering. © 2015 IEEE.

Complete comprehension of loop codes is desirable for a variety of program optimizations. Compilers perform static code analyses and transformations, such as loop tiling or memory partitioning, by constructing and manipulating formal representations of the source code. Runtime systems observe and characterize application behavior to drive resource management and allocation, including dep.ndence detection and parallelization, or scheduling. However, the source codes of target applications are not always available to the compiler or runtime system in an analyzable form. It becomes necessary to find alternate ways to model application behavior. This paper presents a novel mathematical framework to rebuild loops from their memory access traces. An exploration engine traverses a tree-like solution space, driven by the access strides in the trace. It is guaranteed that the engine will find the minimal affine nest capable of reproducing the observed sequence of accesses by exploring this space in a brute force fashion, but most real traces will not be tractable in this way. Methods for an efficient solution space traversal based on mathematical properties of the equation systems which model the solution space are proposed. The experimental evaluation shows that these strategies achieve efficient loop reconstruction, processing hundreds of gigabytes of trace data in minutes. The proposed approach is capable of correctly and minimally reconstructing 100% of the static control parts in PolyBench/C applications. As a side effect, the trace reconstruction process can be used to efficiently compress trace files. The proposed tool can also be used for dynamic access characterization, predicting over 99% of future memory accesses.

In several scenarios, such as in training and education, it is frequently important to distribute large files to many clients, e.g., operating system boot images or raw data files. To carry out such distribution efficiently, we use wireless broadcast and Fountain Codes with low density random encoding to tolerate network packet losses. In particular, we use a hybrid coding technique that combines forward coding using weak LT Codes with a feedback phase at the end, which allows concluding the process faster with lower computing cost than traditional LT codes and without the precoding of Raptor Codes. The novelty of our approach consists of using a scheduler to orchestrate the clients' feedback. The scheduler is scalable in the number of clients and allows the server to know which clients are active and in which phase, and control the coding process adequately. We show early experimental results from simulation and from a practical testbed that confirm the effectiveness of our proposed approach. With a feedback phase triggered when just 2% symbols are missing, we reduced the codewords overhead by 2.5% with respect to traditional LT Codes. We also achieved a high reduction in computational overhead associated to weak LT Codes. Moreover, this approach gives the server full control over the transfer, avoiding producing codewords beyond those strictly needed. Using 802.11g in ad-hoc mode and exploiting TXOPs, we transferred a 100MB file in 21.77s with up to 10% losses. © VDE Verlag GMBH, Berlin, Offenbach, Germany.
