Assessing the value of individual users' contributions in peer-production systems is paramount to the design of mechanisms that support collaboration and improve users' experience. For instance, to incentivize contributions, file-sharing systems based on the BitTorrent protocol equate value with volume of contributed content and use a prioritization mechanism to reward users who contribute more. This approach and similar techniques used in resource-sharing systems rely on the fact that the physical resources shared among users are easily quantifiable. In contrast, information-sharing systems, like social tagging systems, lack the notion of a physical resource unit (e.g., content size, bandwidth) that facilitates the task of evaluating user contributions. For this reason, the issue of estimating the value of user contributions in information sharing systems remains largely unexplored. This paper introduces this problem and takes the first steps towards a solution. More precisely, it presents a framework to design algorithms that estimate the value of user contributions in tagging systems, proposes three complementary success criteria for potential solutions, and outlines the methodological evaluation challenges. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper develops a system of high-speed data transmission on Pocket PC platforms based on 3G network technology, with a high degree of programmability and portability. It is adopted by Microsoft Visual Studio. The system realizes the data collection and transmission through digital media instead of paper media. As it adopts the convergence between mobile phone networks and Internet, PPC terminal can exchange data with the central server. This paper illustrates the development and procedure of the modules. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a method of face detection based on feature analysis and edge detection against skin color-like backgrounds. The proposed method consists of three phases including image preprocessing, skin color segmentation, and determination of face candidates. First, the objects in foreground are separated by image preprocessing. Second, the non-skin color objects are rejected by the method of skin color segmentation. Finally, both the elimination of skin color-like blobs in backgrounds and face detection are performed by the method of determination of face candidates. Experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively detect most of faces in skin color-like backgrounds. In addition, detection of face images with pose and expression variations or against dark backgrounds are also carried out.

In order to enable tight interaction and close collaboration between human and service robots it is necessary that robots imitate the cognitive mechanisms of the brain and their role in competent activity control. That goal can only be achieved if robots are capable of observing their environment, reasoning about it, and autonomously deciding the most appropriate action in a given situation. We present a possible application in this broad area: “Sacarino” is a service robot desingned to work as bellboy in a hotel environment as part of the ROSETEL project. In order to tackle the challenge of learning by interaction we define: (i) the scenarios in which our agent have to work, (ii) its prior knowledge in an episodic memory module to be used in a prime dialog interaction, and (iii) the proper architecture that will support intelligent behaviour suitable for the control of our robot. We will use frameworks like JCOLOBRI (Cases and Ontology Libraries Integration for Building Reasoning Infrastructures) to define the agent's memory structure, taking a deeper look into the episodic memory of the system.

To study brain MRI based clinical researches effectively, it is essential to register clinical test results to standard brain templates, which enables to analyze statistically. Previous brain MRI based clinical researches only treated some qualitative image based data, but it couldn't be performed using digitized numerical data because of a shortage of specialized software. Various software tools such as SPM, MRIcro or 3D-slicer have been used to help clinical researches. However, these tools have some limits over the uses of them in many researches because they didn't specialized. And because all of them only had supported 3D based data, they couldn't be applicable to clinical researches based on 2D data which are produced from many clinical tests. In this research, we improved limits of previous other software and developed new software which are specialized to clinical researches. Our software provides intuitive user interfaces, so non-specialist also can use easily without any training. And it can fix individual errors related to image registration using the functionality of 2D image registration. Therefore we also added the functions of massive data processing, which have not been supported in other software generally. Our software was implemented based on the massive database, so, it can present an accurate standard in diagnosis by using the accumulated data obtained from thousands of stroke patients. Our software also analyze result data flexibly by supporting various types of data which can be used in commercial statistical analysis software packages such as SPSS and SAS including visualized data. © 2010 IADIS.

Various approaches to control aeroelastic wing section with structural nonlinearity emerged in the last years. One of the approaches is based on the Tensor Product (TP) model transformation and the feasibility test of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) under the Parallel Distributed Compensation framework. The main contribution of this paper is that it extends the previously established qLPV model of the aeroelastic wing section with nonlinear friction. It is proven that the extended model can be exactly described after TP type polytopic decomposition. The qLPV model of the aeroelastic wing section with Coulomb friction was transformed to TP type polytopic model form for which LMI based controller was designed. The designed controller is compared to controllers of other authors dealing with the same problem.

Under the fast-developing carbon trading market, the construction industry needs to mitigate carbon emissions from construction processes. Among various construction processes, tunnel construction produces a significant amount of carbon emissions, since it utilizes various types of high energy-consuming equipment. In order to identify and mitigate such carbon emissions of a tunneling project, it is required to reliably estimate carbon footprints of a tunneling project in the pre-planning phase. This paper presents the methodology for estimating the carbon footprints generated during tunnel construction processes using the collaborative tunneling simulation. A case study using this methodology shows that carbon footprints from a utility tunnel construction are significant compared with those from a building construction. In addition, the assessment of carbon footprints of the case study identifies the opportunities to mitigate such impact by supporting decision-making on equipment and operation plans in the planning phase and providing a control target level of carbon footprints in the execution phase. Electric power utilities develop asset management (AM) strategies, based upon their reliability studies, which provide brighter images of the utility company's performance. Failure rate models are highly instrumental in transforming from simple reliability analyses into effective AM strategies. This paper proposes an adaptive network-based inference approach, to model momentary failure rate, in terms of the most influential factors. These factors are achieved through the vast field studies and historical outage fault statistics of the Greater Tehran Electricity Distribution Company (GTEDC) network. Performance of the presented failure rate model is tested, and discussions on capabilities of the model are then presented in detail.
