Wheels are essential parts of an express train, as they support the train's weight, but because of the limited time available for testing and repair in the maintenance factory, the 1000 wheels of each high-speed train must be tested within 1 h. Therefore it is essential to develop a new NDT system that is able to (a) detect cracks quickly and (b) provide high crack-detection ability regardless of the state of the materials. In this paper we propose a scan-type magnetic camera to satisfy this need. We use a linearly integrated Hall sensor array (LIHaS) as a magnetic sensor to make high-speed testing possible, and we use a small, yoke-type magnetizer as the magnetic source for the magnetic camera to assure high crack-detection ability. We tested the method by examining the cracks on a sample wheel traveling at 27.5km/h. © (2010) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

In this paper, the fundamental idea of Linguistic Models (LM) introduced by Pedrycz is followed and their genetically oriented design framework is developed. The LM is designed by the use of fuzzy granulation realized via Context-based Fuzzy C-Means (CFCM) clustering. This clustering technique builds information granules in the form of fuzzy sets and develops clusters by preserving the homogeneity of the clustered patterns associated with the input and output space. However, it is difficult to optimize the number of linguistic context produced in the output space, the number of cluster generated by each context, and fuzzification factor related to fuzzy clustering. Thus, we perform simultaneous optimization of design parameters linking information granules in the input and output spaces based on Genetic Algorithm (GA). The experimental results on coagulant dosing process in a water purification plant reveal that the proposed method shows a good performance in comparison with Linear Regression (LR), Neural Networks (NN), Radial Basis Function Networks (RBFN), and LM itself.

Recently, the use of security surveillance system including CCTV is increasing due to the increase of terrors and crimes. However as the data recorded through the video surveillance system is exposed, the invasion of privacy is raised. The studies on the technology of protecting privacy from the surveillance system in addition to these organizations are actively carried out. To distinguish the human of privacy protection, the identification technique is necessary. This paper proposes the human identification method that uses height and clothing-color information appropriate for the intelligent video surveillance system based on smartcard. It can obtain reliable feature information using smartcard. In this paper, representative colors are extracted by applying octree-based color quantization technique to the clothing region and height is extracted from the geometrical information of the images. Identification is accomplished by comparing the similarities between two data based on Euclidean distance. From the experiment, we could see that the identification of a human can be checked through the proposed system.

Fuzzy controller shows different responses depending on the size of the linguistic variables. Therefore, the choice of appropriate linguistic variable is an important part of the design of fuzzy controller. However, since fuzzy controller is nonlinear, it is difficult to analyze mathematically the affection of the linguistic variable. In this paper to analyze the effect of linguistic variables, the relationship between linguistic variables and fuzzy controller stability zone according to the variable changes in the size of each linguistic variables and the number of linguistic variables, that is calculated by Describing Function approximately, is analyzed through regression analysis. Describing Function can approximate FLC in frequency domain and we can determine the stability using nyquist plot. This study can help to understand the role of linguist variables of consequent membership function and to select them for designing FLC on the point of stability.

Single sensor scanning (hereafter SSS) used to inspect cracks on paramagnetic materials can measure the distribution of the root mean squared value (RMS) of the magnetic field around crack tips quantitatively when sheet type current is induced on the specimen. The vertical direction magnetic field alternates to the surface of the crack tips because the sheet type induced current on the specimen is distorted by the existence of the crack in an SSS system. The RMS distribution of the magnetic field, which can be measured by using SSS, depends on the crack size and shape, so it can be used to evaluate a crack size quantitatively. An algorithm of quantitative nondestructive testing and evaluation of cracks of various shapes and sizes on the aluminum alloy, Al7075 is proposed in this paper. © (2010) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

At this time, to distinguish the human of privacy protection, the identification technique is necessary. For identification, the proposed system uses soft-biometrics such as color and height information based on smart card. It can obtain reliable feature information using smart card. In this paper, representative colors are extracted by applying octree-based color quantization technique to the clothing region and height is extracted from the geometrical information of the images. The identification is accomplished by comparing the similarities between two data based on Euclidean distance. Through identification by using multiple information rather than single information, the proposed system demonstrates the possibility of human identification under the surveillance camera environment.

In contemporary society, access to information is easy because of advanced communication media, so security system which prevent unauthorized access is considered important. Fingerprint verification systems are very convenient and secure. Minutiae-based fingerprint verification is widely used in fingerprint verification. However, existing systems can cause errors according to size and quality of fingerprint images that are read only with a use of minutiae. Due to such errors, the users who have no authority of access are allowed to use the information, which is a problem. This paper proposes hybrid fingerprint verification methods of two lands to improve performance of minutiae-based fingerprint verification. One is method using fingerprint binary image, and another is method using ridge-information. The result which experiments two kind methods, we confirm to improved performance of fingerprint verification than when only minutiae-based verification was used.

A micro-array method using Hall sensors was proposed in previous research by the authors. That array method allowed a two-dimensional magnetic field measurement with high spatial resolution using simplified connections. A wide range of magnetic fields could be measured quantitatively with high spatial resolution. This paper proposes a nondestructive testing (NDT) method using a magnetic camera with the previous micro-array method to detect cracks in a specimen at high temperatures. Distilled water has a boiling point of 373.15 K at atmospheric pressure. Therefore, the Hall sensor array, which is submerged in the distilled water, can be protected from an external high temperature of several hundred degrees Kelvin until the container is broken. If the Hall voltage of each Hall sensor changes according to the external magnetic field at the boiling point of the liquid, we propose that the crack can be detected in a high temperature environment using a magnetic camera submerged in the liquid. Plate specimens made of SS41 stainless steel, with slits in the each specimen, were used to verify the proposed NDT method using a high spatial magnetic camera in a high temperature environment.

Since the increase of terrors and crimes, the demand of the video surveillance system is increasing. The video surveillance system has been operated for public interest by the police and local government. However private information such as faces or behavior patterns can be recorded in CCTV, it may cause the invasion of privacy. This paper proposes a video surveillance system that satisfies both functions of privacy protection and surveillance. The proposed system operates multiple surveillance cameras with a single RFID system. The RFID system is used in order to recognize internal or external personnel of object at entrance and cameras are used to extract features such as height and clothing-colors of the object. The proposed system can reduce invasion of privacy by intensity of scrambling according to access levels. Based on the experimental results, we are able to confirm that surveillant can classify personnel information fast and exactly in the display.

Laser machining technology has potential to be applied to FPD (flat panel display) industry. The equipments are required to repair the electronics or inspect the pattern with using the laser. In order to repair micro and nano pattern for FPD, the equipments should be able to carry large sized work-piece with high speed and accuracy. We proposed a fine XY-stage mechanism which is compact and fast. The stage actuated by PZT (Piezo Electric Transducer). The PZT motion is amplified by flexure lever mechanisms. The stage and actuator mechanism is designed so that satisfies the requirements: The stage moves over 10 um u 10 um in XY-range with bandwidth over 80 Hz. The positioning accuracy should be about 100 nm.
