Comparative Analysis of Spatial Human Mobility Parameters in 15 Most Populous U.S. Metropolitan Statistical Areas

This research paper presents the results of two studies investigating human mobility patterns in the 15 largest Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) in the United States. It studied 14 daily mobility parameters aggregated at the MSA level, derived from four primary mobility parameters: Number of Visited Locations (N_LOC), Number of Unique Visited Locations (N_ULOC), Radius of Gyration (R_GYR), and Distance Traveled (D_TRAV) over a 30-day period. The first study was conducted on data from two large MSAs, one coastal and one inland (Boston and Atlanta, respectively). The aim was to examine associations between daily values of mobility parameters aggregated at the MSA level and identify those carrying similar or identical information. Results of factor analysis showed that these could be adequately described by two independent factors, pointing to one or two of the mobility parameters as sufficient to represent the whole set in analyses based on associations. These could either be D_TRAV, as it had high loadings on both factors, or N_LOC and R_GYR due to their high loadings on the two extracted factors. The second study was conducted on daily mobility datasets from the 15 MSAs. The aim was to compare daily mobility patterns of these MSAs and group them based on their mobility pattern similarities. Factor analysis of the aggregated mean daily distances (D_TRAV) across different MSAs over the studied period classified them into two distinct groups: one predominantly composed of inland MSAs and the other primarily of coastal MSAs. Strong weekly cycle trends emerged in these groups. Specifically, individuals from the inland MSA group tended to travel the furthest on Fridays and the least on Sundays, whereas those from the coastal MSA group traveled the most on Saturdays and the least on Mondays. This weekly pattern was robust, with 7-day lag autocorrelations of mean daily parameter values ranging between 0.81 to 0.99, excluding the mean daily N_LOC. These findings offer a

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is rapidly driving a new phase of artificial intelligence revolution, marked by various applications such as ChatGPT, Sora and DeepSeek. With powerful capabilities in content generation, personalization and user interaction, GenAI can drive significant enhancements in various mobile services to satisfy individual user preferences. Meanwhile, mobile services offer substantial support for accessibility, functionality and intelligence of GenAI applications. However, current research on integrating GenAI and mobile services remains nascent, lacking necessary theoretical and technical support. In this survey, we break down a new vision to guide research on integrating GenAI and mobile services, aiming to improve 6G intelligence levels and enable 6G mobile networks to support the integration of GenAI and mobile services effectively. We begin by examining the necessity of integrating GenAI with 6G mobile services and exploring potential learning architectures of GenAI models within mobile networks. Next, we analyze potential solutions from two perspectives: how 6G mobile networks empower GenAI and how GenAI enables mobile services. We subsequently explore a promising use case, along with essential features and techniques, to facilitate the integration of GenAI and mobile services. Finally, we discuss future research directions, aiming at realizing intelligent 6G networks. © 2015 IEEE.

data-Driven Power Flow Estimation for MVDC Distribution Systems Based on Physics-Embedded FCN

Maintaining high prediction accuracy with varying grid topologies poses a significant challenge to adopting neural network (NN)-based approaches for power flow (PF) estimation in medium-voltage direct current (MVDC) distribution systems. This paper proposes a physics-embedded fully convolutional network (PEFCN) to improve the accuracy. Physics-embedded techniques are incorporated in the proposed PEFCN through 1) architecture reconstruction, and 2) loss function reformulation. Architecture is reconstructed by input channel conversion calculation in a new physics operation layer. This process offers physical connections among the three input matrix channels (voltage, current, and line conductance). Three new physics loss terms are included in the loss function to restrict the outliers violating the limits of converter power ratings and terminal MVDC voltages. The two operations enable the FCN to achieve improved prediction accuracy and strong generalization capabilities. Five MVDC distribution systems, characterized by different dc voltage levels and topology configurations, serve to validate the superiority of the proposed PEFCN over other NNs in the PF estimation for scenarios involving both fixed and varying system structures. Moreover, a modified IEEE 69-bus distribution system is further used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed PEFCN for larger systems. © 2010-2012 IEEE.

Recently, the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19), as named by the World Health Organization (WHO), has spread to over 200 countries. The WHO has declared this disease as a worldwide public health emergency. One of the most difficult tasks in combating this epidemic is to identify and segregate the afflicted people. The reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction test (RT-PCR) is the most common pathology test used to diagnose this infection. Studies show that the RT-PCR test has a low-positive rate and sometimes becomes ineffective in diagnosing infection. In some cases, computed tomography (CT) scans reveal acute pneumonia and pulmonary anomalies. Therefore, CT scans are used together with RT-PCR tests to confirm infected people. Existing artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques require a large number of CT scans for training, which is a time-consuming process. Visual inspection shows that most CT scans of COVID-19 cases have broken, blurred, and ambiguous edges for infectious areas. Another major issue with these images is the heterogeneous intensity of the pixels, high noise, and low resolution. As a result of all these issues, the problem of effective edges/boundaries of various areas of CT scans of COVID-19 cases cannot be resolved by the current edge detection approach. Indeed, improper selection of edges can lead to an incorrect diagnosis of diseases through CT scans of COVID-19 cases. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a diagnostic method in addition to the RT-PCR test that can extract useful information from the minimum number of chest CT scans of suspected COVID-19 cases. This study introduces a new ambiguous edge detection method (AEDM) for identifying the edges/boundaries of different regions in CT scans of COVID-19 cases. Reversible data hiding scheme using prediction neural network and adaptive modulation mapping

Prediction error expansion (PEE) is an attractive approach for reversible data hiding (RDH). The key issue for PEE-based RDH is to improve the prediction accuracy and design a better modulation mapping. This paper proposes a novel prediction error modulation (PEM) scheme, which comprises a prediction neural network and a modulation mapping rule generation algorithm. We use the multi-scale feature extraction (MSFE) module and the residual dense networks (RDN) to construct the prediction neural network. In the proposed RDH scheme, the cover image is divided into two parts, the reference pixel set and the cover pixel set, based on the chessboard pattern. The prediction network serves to predict the values of the cover pixel set using the reference pixel set. An optimization model is set up to adaptively determine the optimal modulation mapping for data hiding based on the specific prediction-error histogram and payload constraint. Experimental results show the superiority of the proposed prediction neural network and the optimized modulation mapping compared with related works. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have been the driving force behind many of the recent advances in machine learning. However, research has shown that DNNs are vulnerable to adversarial examples - input samples that have been perturbed to force DNN-based models to make errors. As a result, adversarial machine learning (AdvML) has gained a lot of attention, and researchers have investigated these vulnerabilities in various settings and modalities. In addition, DNNs have also been found to incorporate embedded bias and often produce unexplainable predictions, which can result in antisocial AI applications. The emergence of new AI technologies that leverage large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT and GPT-4, increases the risk of producing antisocial applications at scale. AdvML for social good (AdvML4G) is an emerging field that repurposes the AdvML bug to invent prosocial applications. Regulators, practitioners, and researchers should collaborate to encourage the development of prosocial applications and hinder the development of antisocial ones. In this work, we provide the first comprehensive review of the emerging field of AdvML4G. This paper encompasses a taxonomy that highlights the emergence of AdvML4G, a discussion of the differences and similarities between AdvML4G and AdvML, a taxonomy covering social good-related concepts and aspects, an exploration of the motivations behind the emergence of AdvML4G at the intersection of ML4G and AdvML, and an extensive summary of the works that utilize AdvML4G as an auxiliary tool for innovating prosocial applications. Finally, we elaborate upon various challenges and open research issues that require significant attention from the research community. © 2020 IEEE.
