Intelligent supply line surveillance is critical for modern smart grids. Smart sensors and gateway nodes are strategically deployed along supply lines to achieve intelligent surveillance. They collect data continuously and transmit it to the control centre in real-time. It enables real-time monitoring, fault detection, and efficient energy management across distribution networks. This advanced surveillance system ensures continuous monitoring of supply lines, detecting anomalies, and optimizing operations to maintain the stability and reliability of the smart grid. However, the reliance of all participating nodes on public communication channels to transmit supply line surveillance data exposes these systems to critical cyber attacks. These cyber attacks include impersonation, physical tampering, ephemeral secret leakage, and desynchronization attacks. To address these issues, existing key-exchange protocols often fail to ensure robust security while imposing high computation and communication overheads, limiting their practicality for resource-constrained environments. Therefore, we propose a secure and efficient key exchange and tamper-resistant authentication protocol using Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) and Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs). The PUF mechanism provides robust resistance against physical tampering and cloning attacks, ensuring enhanced physical security for supply line devices. We validate the security robustness of the devised protocol using the Random or Real (ROR) model. Furthermore, informal security analysis demonstrates the protocol's robustness in rigorously resisting various attacks, including physical tampering, impersonation, ephemeral secret leakage and desynchronization. Moreover, we determine the performance evaluation that reveals the protocol's superior efficiency compared to competing protocols, achieving significant reductions of 28.64% in computation overhead and 9.96% in communication overhead. © 2014 IEEE.

Ensuring the safety of Autonomous Driving systems (ADS) across diverse and unpredictable operational scenarios remains a significant challenge for accident prevention. Central to this effort is the continuous monitoring of Operational Design Conditions (ODC), which encompass both in-vehicle factors and external Operational Design Domain (ODD). However, the absence of robust methodologies to precisely identify ODC boundaries hinders the deployment and adoption of high-level ADS. This paper introduces a learnable ODC monitor designed to identify implicit operational design condition boundaries to prevent ADS failures. By integrating a state-space duality encoder and a Bayesian neural network decoder, we propose an efficient learnable ODC monitor, termed ODCNet. Furthermore, to further enhance prediction reliability, residual error analysis with linear discrimination is applied for calibrating prediction. Experimental results demonstrate ODCNet's superiority in failure prediction compared to baseline models, achieving a balance between safety and coverage. These findings contribute to advancing data-driven accident prediction and prevention strategies, ensuring safer deployments of ADS in complex environments. © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The past ten years have seen notable research activity and significant advancements in multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) antennas. An MU-MIMO antenna system must accommodate many subscribers without additional bandwidth or energy. User scheduling becomes a critical strategy to take advantage of multiuser heterogeneity and acquire maximum gain in systems where the total number of recipients exceeds the number of transmitting antennas. Due to their high computational cost, many user selection methods currently in use, such as greedy algorithms and exhaustive search are unsuitable for MU-MIMO systems. A suitable scheduling mechanism is essential for the various users in an MU-MIMO system to utilise bandwidth and enhance the system’s total rate effectively. In this article, we proposed a user and antenna scheduling with a population-based meta-heuristic approach, namely the binary salp swarm algorithm (binary SSA), to increase the system sum rate with low computing complexity. We specifically used a population-based meta-heuristics optimisation technique to simulate the user scheduling problem in MU-MIMO systems, characterising complicated issues with binary decisions. Additionally, binary SSA significantly outperforms existing population-based models, such as the binary bat algorithm (binary BA), PSO, SSA, FPA and binary flower pollination algorithm (binary FPA), regarding system throughput/sum rate. The proposed binary SSA technique also effectively achieves a system sum rate compared to a random search scheme and other existing suboptimal scheduling methods. Compared to binary BA and binary FPA approaches, the binary SSA has a higher convergence rate and superior searching capabilities. The simulation outcomes show the proposed binary SSA-based scheduling scheme delivers noticeable performance benefits. © The Author(s) 2025.

In this paper, we explore the ever-changing field of Digital Twins (DT) in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) context, emphasizing their critical role in advancing Industry 4.0 toward the frontiers of Industry 5.0. The article explores the applications of DT in several industrial sectors and their smooth integration into the IIoT, focusing on the fundamentals of digital twins and emphasizing the importance of virtual-real integration. It discusses the emergence of DT, contextualizing its evolution within the framework of IIoT. The study categorizes the different types of DT, including prototypes and instances, and provides an in-depth analysis of the enabling technologies such as IoT, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Extended Reality (XR), cloud computing, and the Application Programming Interface (API). The paper demonstrates the DT advantages through the practical integration of real-world case studies, which highlights the technology’s exceptional capacity to improve traceability and fault detection within the context of the IIoT. This paper offers a focused, application-driven perspective on DTs in IIoT, specifically highlighting their role in key production phases such as designing, intelligent manufacturing, maintenance, resource management, automation, security, and safety. By emphasizing their potential to support human-centric, sustainable advancements in Industry 5.0, this study distinguishes itself from existing literature. It provides valuable insights that connect theoretical advancements with practical implementation, making it a crucial resource for researchers, practitioners, and industry professionals.

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) seeks to improve smart factory productivity by leveraging automation and scalability. For automation in industry, optimization, collaboration and protection, and scalability, the IoTs paradigm, technology for communication and information, and intelligent systems are integrated as a single organism. This article presents a blockchain-assisted safe data-sharing mechanism that provides security requirements in the industry using IoT. End-to-end authentication is developed based on the blockchain’s reputation, and the smart contract is used to validate nodes’ security measures. Through integrity verification and categorization in node terminals and industry, the blockchain paradigm manages data collection and dissemination. An efficient proof of authentication (PoAh) consensus mechanism is created using the blockchain network to build a collaborative network to preserve logs and verification data in the industrial IoT. It accomplishes trustworthy authentication and endpoint activity tracing, and edge computing is used in blockchain nodes to offer device authentication processes that utilize smart contracts and PoAh. According to an experimental study, the proposed architecture lowers the authentication time and obtains a high response rate. The proposed system’s service time shows the efficiency of PoAh-based blockchain architecture for industrial IoT compared with existing works. Finally, we evaluated various block sizes to ensure an efficient transaction rate. The outcomes demonstrate the practicality of the suggested and put-into-practice architecture, distinguished by enhanced data audibility, device data ownership, security, and privacy while utilizing decentralized storage. © The Author(s) 2025.

The rising use of IoT devices in Public Health Information systems (PHIS) has revolutionized the way patient surveillance and record keeping is being done in real-time, but this has exposed systems to serious cybersecurity threats. Generated by using traditional approaches, like rule-based detection and basic artificial neural network-based models, is not capable of dealing with the dynamic and diverse nature of threats in IoT networks. These approaches are often inadequate in providing a detailed analysis of the attack especially because they do not have the ability to learn from sequences of features. This work presents an improved predictive analytics model using CNN with BiLSTM to improve cybersecurity in IoT connected PHIS. The CNN component performs feature extraction on spatial elements in the data received while the BiLSTM uncovers temporal dependencies and sequence of attacks, which enhance threats identification accuracy. The process of the proposed methodology includes dataset acquisition and cleansing of IoT healthcare datasets and finally, the training and testing of the model with the help of relevant parameter such as accuracy, precision, and recall values. Qualitative comparison with the baseline models also shows that the proposed hybrid CNN-BiLSTM model performs better, and it has fewer false alarms to detect a range of cyber threats. Accordingly, the results point to a feasible solution for enhancing security and reliability of IoT-based healthcare applications to protect patients’ record from cyber threats.

Counterfactual inference aims to estimate the counterfactual outcome at the individual level given knowledge of an observed treatment and the factual outcome, with broad applications in fields such as epidemiology, econometrics, and management science. Previous methods rely on a known structural causal model (SCM) or assume the homogeneity of the exogenous variable and strict monotonicity between the outcome and exogenous variable. In this paper, we propose a principled approach for identifying and estimating the counterfactual outcome. We first introduce a simple and intuitive rank preservation assumption to identify the counterfactual outcome without relying on a known structural causal model. Building on this, we propose a novel ideal loss for theoretically unbiased learning of the counterfactual outcome and further develop a kernel-based estimator for its empirical estimation. Our theoretical analysis shows that the rank preservation assumption is not stronger than the homogeneity and strict monotonicity assumptions, and shows that the proposed ideal loss is convex, and the proposed estimator is unbiased. Extensive semi-synthetic and real-world experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

PRAD: Periapical Radiograph Analysis dataset and Benchmark Model Development

Deep learning (DL), a pivotal technology in artificial intelligence, has recently gained substantial traction in the domain of dental auxiliary diagnosis. However, its application has predominantly been confined to imaging modalities such as panoramic radiographs and Cone Beam Computed Tomography, with limited focus on auxiliary analysis specifically targeting Periapical Radiographs (PR). PR are the most extensively utilized imaging modality in endodontics and periodontics due to their capability to capture detailed local lesions at a low cost. Nevertheless, challenges such as resolution limitations and artifacts complicate the annotation and recognition of PR, leading to a scarcity of publicly available, large-scale, high-quality PR analysis datasets. This scarcity has somewhat impeded the advancement of DL applications in PR analysis. In this paper, we present PRAD-10K, a dataset for PR analysis. PRAD-10K comprises 10,000 clinical periapical radiograph images, with pixel-level annotations provided by professional dentists for nine distinct anatomical structures, lesions, and artificial restorations or medical devices, We also include classification labels for images with typical conditions or lesions. Furthermore, we introduce a DL network named PRNet to establish benchmarks for PR segmentation tasks. Experimental results demonstrate that PRNet surpasses previous state-of-the-art medical image segmentation models on the PRAD-10K dataset. Outlier detection refers to the identification of anomalous samples that deviate significantly from the distribution of normal data and has been extensively studied and used in a variety of practical tasks. However, most unsupervised outlier detection methods are carefully designed to detect specified outliers, while real-world data may be entangled with different types of outliers. In this study, we propose a fuzzy rough sets-based multi-scale outlier detection method to identify various types of outliers. Specifically, a novel fuzzy rough sets-based method that integrates relative fuzzy granule density is first introduced to improve the capability of detecting local outliers. Then, a multi-scale view generation method based on granular-ball computing is proposed to collaboratively identify group outliers at different levels of granularity. Moreover, reliable outliers and inliers determined by the three-way decision are used to train a weighted support vector machine to further improve the performance of outlier detection. The proposed method innovatively transforms unsupervised outlier detection into a semi-supervised classification problem and for the first time explores the fuzzy rough sets-based outlier detection from the perspective of multi-scale granular balls, allowing for high adaptability to different types of outliers. Extensive experiments carried out on both artificial and UCI datasets demonstrate that the proposed outlier detection method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods, improving the results by at least 8.48% in terms of the Area Under the ROC Curve (AUROC) index.
