Masses of experiments have shown individual preference for fairness which seems irrational. The reason behind it remains a focus for research. The effect of spite (individuals are only concerned with their own relative standing) on the evolution of fairness has attracted increasing attention from experiments, but only has been implicitly studied in one evolutionary model. The model did not involve high-offer rejections, which have been found in the form of non-monotonic rejections (rejecting offers that are too high or too low) in experiments. Here, we introduce a high offer and a non-monotonic rejection in structured populations of finite size, and use strategy intervention to explicitly study how spite influences the evolution of fairness: five strategies are in sequence added into the competition of a fair strategy and a selfish strategy. We find that spite promotes fairness, altruism inhibits fairness, and the non-monotonic rejection can cause fairness to overcome selfishness, which cannot happen without high-offer rejections. Particularly for the group-structured population with seven discrete strategies, we analytically study the effect of population size, mutation, and migration on fairness, selfishness, altruism, and spite. A larger population size cannot change the dominance of fairness, but it promotes altruism and inhibits selfishness and spite. Intermediate mutation maximizes selfishness and fairness, and minimizes spite;intermediate mutation maximizes altruism for intermediate migration and minimizes altruism otherwise. The existence of migration inhibits selfishness and fairness, and promotes altruism;sufficient migration promotes spite. We can significantly reduce the time required to realize designs if it is possible to find limits to the performance of an embedded system, solely based on high-level system specifications. For that purpose, we present in this paper the cprof profiler, which determines the number of clock cycles needed to execute a C-program in hardware. The cprof tool is based on the Clang compiler front-end to parse C-programs and to produce instrumented source code for the profiling. Using cprof, we determine a lower and upper bound limit for all 29 cases of the PolyBench/C benchmark suite. The lower and upper bound are determined using the absolute performance estimations assuming all statement are mapped onto the same processing resource and unbounded performance estimations assuming unlimited resources. We also compared the clock cycles found by cprof with RTL implementations for all 29 Polybench/C cases and found that cprof determines with 1.2% accuracy the correct number of clock cycles. It does this in a fraction of the time compared to the time needed to do a full RTL simulation. © 2016 ACM.

In this paper a framework for warning people when they are at risk of unhealthy eating is presented. data is collected trough a mo- bile application called “ThinkSlim” which was developed for the purpose of studying eating behavior using Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) principles. data is converted in order to allow early prediction of healthy and unhealthy eating events and a decision tree algorithm taking into account the longitudinal structure of the dataset is utilized to predict healthy versus unhealthy eating events. Rules that are derived from this decision tree are used to cluster users to groups based on the rule triggering frequen- cies. Groups created are used for providing users with semi-tailored feedback and are analyzed providing useful insights regarding the conditions that lead to unhealthy eating among different participants allowing for building different eating profiles.

Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) techniques gain more ground in studies and data collection among different disciplines. Decision tree algorithms and their ensemble variants are widely used for classifying this type of data, since they are easy to use and provide satisfactory results. However, most of these algorithms do not take into account the multiple levels (per-subject, per-day, etc.) in which EMA data are organized. In this paper we explore how the EMA data organization can be taken into account when dealing with decision trees and specifically how a combination of bagging and boosting can be utilized in a classification task. A new algorithm called BBT (standing for Bagged Boosted Trees) is proposed which is enhanced by an over/under sampling method leading to better estimates of the conditional class probability function. BBT's necessity and effects are demonstrated using both simulated datasets and real-world EMA data collected using a mobile application following the eating behavior of 100 people. Experimental analysis shows that BBT leads to clear improvements with respect to prediction error reduction and conditional class probability estimation.

Electrocardiographic imaging (ECGI) reconstructs epicardial potentials and electrograms from body-surface electrocardiograms and a torso-heart geometry. For clinical purposes, local activation and recovery times are often more useful than epicardial electrograms. However, noise and fractionation can affect estimation of activation and recovery times from reconstructed electrograms. Here, we employ a method for activation and recovery time estimation that detects the simultaneous presence of spatial and temporal features associated with a passing wavefront and evaluate this in a series of canine experiments. We show that estimation of activation times is more accurate when this spatiotemporal approach is used, however, recovery times are best determined with a temporal-only approach. Additional spatial smoothing further benefits activation and recovery time estimation in all cases. This results in a median beat origin localization error of only one centimeter, which could expedite catheter-based diagnostic evaluation and ablation in clinical settings.

Poly(2‐alkyl‐2‐oxazoline)s (PAOx) are regaining interest for biomedical applications. However, their full potential is hampered by the inability to synthesise uniform high‐molar mass PAOx. In this work, we proposed alternative intrinsic chain transfer mechanisms based on 2‐oxazoline and oxazolinium chain‐end tautomerisation and derived improved polymerization conditions to suppress chain transfer, allowing the synthesis of highly defined poly(2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline)s up to ca. 50 kDa (dispersity ( Ð ) <1.05) and defined polymers up to at least 300 kDa ( Ð <1.2). The determination of the chain transfer constants for the polymerisations hinted towards the tautomerisation of the oxazolinium chain end as most plausible cause for chain transfer. Finally, the method was applied for the preparation of up to 60 kDa molar mass copolymers of 2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline and 2‐methoxycarbonylethyl‐2‐oxazoline.

Despite numerous recent efforts, 3D object retrieval based on partial shape queries remains a challenging problem, far from being solved. The problem can be defined as: given a partial view of a shape as query, retrieve all partially similar 3D models from a repository. The objective of this track is to evaluate the performance of partial 3D object retrieval methods, for partial shape queries of various scan qualities and degrees of partiality. The retrieval problem is often found in cultural heritage applications, for which partial scans of objects query a dataset of geometrically distinct classes. © 2016 The Eurographics Association.

With the aim of resolving the issue of cluster analysis more precisely and validly, a new approach was proposed based on biogeography-based optimization (abbreviated as BBO) algorithm. (Method) First, we reformulated the problem with an optimization model based on the variance ratio criterion (VARAC). Then, BBO was presented to search the optimal solution of the VARAC. There are 400 data of four groups in the experimental dataset, which have the degrees of overlapping of three distinct scales. The first one is nonoverlapping, the second one is partial overlapping, and the last is severely overlapping. BBO algorithm was compared with three different state-of-the-art approaches. We ran every algorithm 20 times. In this experiment, our results demonstrate the maximum VARAC values that can be found by BBO. The conclusion is that BBO is predominant which is extremely quick for the issue of clustering analysis. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2017.
