Ion channels exhibit a remarkably high accuracy in selecting uniquely its associated type of ion. The mechanisms behind ion selectivity are not well understood. Current explanations build mainly on molecular biology and bioinformatics. Here we propose a simple physical model for ion selectivity based on the driven damped harmonic oscillator (DDHO). The driving force for this oscillator is provided by self-organizing harmonic turbulent structures in the dehydrating ionic flow through the ion channel, namely, oscillating pressure waves in one dimension, and toroidal vortices in two and three dimensions. Density fluctuations caused by these turbulences efficiently transmit their energy to aqua ions that resonate with the driving frequency. Consequently, these release their hydration shell and exit the ion channel as free ions. Existing modeling frameworks do not express the required complex spatiotemporal dynamics, hence we introduce a macroscopic continuum model for ionic dehydration and transport, based on the hydrodynamics of a dissipative ionic flow through an ion channel, subject to electrostatic and amphiphilic interactions. This model combines three classical physical fields: Navier-Stokes equations from hydrodynamics, Gauss's law from Maxwell theory, and the convection-diffusion equation from continuum physics. Numerical experiments with mixtures of chemical species of ions in various degrees of hydration indeed reveal the emergence of strong oscillations in the ionic flow that are instrumental in the efficient dehydration and cause a strong ionic jet into the cell. As such, they provide a powerful engine for the DDHO mechanism. Theoretical predictions of the modeling framework match significantly with empirical patch-clamp data. The DDHO standard response curve defines a unique resonance frequency that depends on the mass and charge of the ion. The effort to personalise eLearning has led to the development of sophisticated Adaptive Hypermedia (AH) systems that can adapt to many aspects of the learner's characteristics or explicit preferences. However, while many of these adaptations are grounded in sound pedagogical theories, it is unclear how effective such adaptations are in supporting everyday teaching and learning processes that take place in the classroom today. This paper presents a study that explores what teachers in the UK, who have been named by their colleagues as implementing best-practice in the classroom, expect from an eLearning platform that can adapt to the individual needs of their students. The result of the study shows that there are currently some discrepancies between the teachers' expectations and what adaptive hypermedia currently offers. The paper then concludes by describing how these discrepancies can be addressed in future AH systems.

Influence between objects needs to be assessed in many applications. Lots of measures have been proposed, but a domain-independent method is still expected. In this paper, we give a probabilistic definition of influence based on the random walker model on graphs. Two approaches, linear systems method and Basic InfRank algorithm, are shown and return equal results, but Basic InfRank is more efficient by iterative computation. Two variants on bipartite graphs and star graphs are discussed. Experiments show InfRank algorithms have good accuracy, fast convergent rate and high performance.

This paper proposes a novel approach in integrating seemingly contradictory approaches of teaching and learning via collaborative and personalised learning activities by using augmented reality museum exhibits. The paper highlights the benefits that computer supported collaborative learning and computer supported personalised learning bring or promise to bring to the learner. A proposal is given for a study that will setup a common ground for these two approaches via a location-aware augmented reality museum display. The principal aim of the study is to investigate how the process of learning collaboratively is intertwined with personalised experience of visiting the museum display. Ultimately, the result of the study will provide a new understanding of visitor's experience of museum displays, not only within the context of the museum's location, but also within the classroom where the visit truly begins and finishes.
