We study the dynamic pricing problem with knapsack, addressing the challenge of balancing exploration and exploitation under resource constraints. We introduce three algorithms tailored to different informational settings: a Boundary Attracted Re-solve Method for full information, an online learning algorithm for scenarios with no prior information, and an estimate-then-select re-solve algorithm that leverages machine-learned informed prices with known upper bound of estimation errors. The Boundary Attracted Re-solve Method achieves logarithmic regret without requiring the non-degeneracy condition, while the online learning algorithm attains an optimal O(√T) regret. Our estimate-then-select approach bridges the gap between these settings, providing improved regret bounds when reliable offline data is available. Numerical experiments validate the effectiveness and robustness of our algorithms across various scenarios. This work advances the understanding of online resource allocation and dynamic pricing, offering practical solutions adaptable to different informational structures. © 2025, CC BY-NC-ND.

As real environments are quite complex, multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) channels should be characterized by the multidimensional-multirelational models. Tensor linear algebra has been emerging as a powerful and promising tool for such MIMO channel modeling and estimation. However, to the best of our knowledge, there hardly exists any algebraic framework of MIMO channel equalization when the channel is modeled as an arbitrary-dimensional transfer tensor (a tensor whose entries are all rational z-functions). In this work, we first propose a new method based on the projection, namely, 'projection-based method,' to determine whether a given transfer tensor is a full-rank tensor or not and carry out the inversion of an invertible transfer tensor. Our idea is employing the projection subspace of the system transfer tensor to simplify the pertinent inversion process. Second, we design the finite-impulse-response (FIR) realization to approximate the inverse of an arbitrary transfer tensor such that all entries of the approximated inverse transfer tensor are finite-degree polynomials of z. Third, we also analyze the computational and memory complexities required by our proposed new projection-based method for checking the full-rank condition of a given transfer tensor and for undertaking the tensor inversion. Our developed new theories and analysis in this work can be applied to determine the FIR model-orders of an approximated inverse MIMO transfer tensor often encountered in signal processing, control, communications, etc. © 2007-2012 IEEE.

The rise of deep learning algorithms has sparked interest in the financial domain. The foreign exchange market (FOREX) is the globally leading financial market with millions of active stakeholders. Research in deep learning for forecasting price movements has shown its efficacy in financial markets. Notably, LSTM have empirically proven the best performance among other machine learning techniques. However, studies have shown the lack of deep learning hybrid comparisons to fortify empirical claims, especially in the FX market characterized for its high volatility and variance among currency pairs. This study develops a generalized LSTM model to forecast the major pairs and conducts a comparative analysis with a secondary hybrid deep learning model to assess and solidify the robustness of deep learning methods in forex forecasting. The empirical scenario simulates a classification problem employing cross-validation techniques to optimize the models’ generalization rigorously. Evaluation of the model utilized the accuracy, precision, recall, and f1-score metrics. Results indicated the performance of the models from best to worst were LSTM, SRNN and followed by CNN indicating the importance of testing deep learning approaches in different empirical setups. Conclusively, this study highlights the need challenges in forex forecasting and raises the need for more robust assessments on machine learning models forecasting capabilities. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Stuttering or stammering is a common neurogenic, psychogenic fluency disorder wherein people have uncontrolled blocks on the natural flow of speech. Automatic Stuttering Event Detection (SED) is a widely recognised challenge due to the heterogenic and overlapped nature of stuttering speech. Therefore, this comparative study investigates the impact of stuttering event representation on detection performance. The paper evaluates the performance of SED and shows the impact of employing ASR pre-trained feature extractions on each stuttering event. Moreover, the paper provides different groups of experiments that evaluate the impact of three acoustic features, the Zero Crossing Rate (ZCR), the Spectral Flux Onset Strength Envelope (SFO), and Fundamental Frequency (FF) features, on SED performance. The paper demonstrates that the fusion of spectral and ASR features improves SED performance across all stuttering events by 8%. The F1 score of the Block class increased by approximately 10%, from 15% to 25%, while the word repetition and interjection increased by 8%. In addition, our experiments proved that the fusion of temporal features increased the average F1 score of SED by 2% across all stuttering events. The F1 score of the prolongation and sound repetition classes increased by 6% and 3%, respectively.

This paper presents a comprehensive investigation of traffic radar coverage efficiency under different placement strategies in collaboration with Zhejiang Communications Investment Group Company Limited (CICO). The overall goal is to maximise coverage while minimising blind spots and the number of radars, given the constraints of the road. The NSGA-II multi-objective optimisation algorithm is found to be capable of generating a set of optimal solutions for the proposed radar placement configurations. When aiming for 100% coverage, the results indicate that a multi-antenna radar configuration requires the lowest radar density. Overall, this study provides valuable insights to transportation infrastructure owners in determining the best radar placement strategies for road traffic monitoring. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2024.

Dynamic searchable symmetric encryption (DSSE) enables users to delegate the keyword search over dynamically updated encrypted databases to an honest-but-curious server without losing keyword privacy. This paper studies a new and practical security risk to DSSE, namely, secret key compromise (e.g., a user’s secret key is leaked or stolen), which threatens all the security guarantees offered by existing DSSE schemes. To address this open problem, we introduce the notion of searchable encryption with key-update (SEKU) that provides users with the option of non-interactive key updates. We further define the notion of post-compromise secure with respect to leakage functions to study whether DSSE schemes can still provide data security after the client’s secret key is compromised. We demonstrate that post-compromise security is achievable with a proposed protocol called "Bamboo". Interestingly, the leakage functions of Bamboo satisfy the requirements for both forward and backward security. We conduct a performance evaluation of Bamboo using a real-world dataset and compare its runtime efficiency with the existing forward-and-backward secure DSSE schemes. Image captioning is a vision-language task that targets at describing an image by generating a coherent sentence automatically. This technology allows computers to understand and describe images like humans, enabling further processing of images. It combines computer vision and natural language processing, which has broad applications. This paper investigates the use of vision-language pre-trained models for image captioning. In this article, an encoder-decoder hybrid model based on PVT and BERT is pre-trained on a large number of image-text pairs, possessing both understanding and generation capabilities. It consists of three components: 1) an image encoder and a text encoder to extract image and text features respectively; 2) a multi-modal encoder to align the two modalities; and 3) a text decoder to generate text descriptions. This paper focuses on enhancing the image encoder of the model, which is crucial for image captioning models as it extracts high-resolution image features. Reducing training time and computational costs can also improve the applicability of pre-trained models. Improvements are made to the original model by modifying the ViT model architecture of the image encoding module. A feature pyramid structure and a spatial reduction attention mechanism is introduced to extract high-resolution image features while reducing computational complexity and memory usage, thereby enhancing the universality of the model. The model adopts a pure Transformer architecture, discarding the convolutional structure, and achieves excellent performance.

Moving target defense (MTD) is a promising approach to defend against load redistribution attacks on the internet-of-things (IoT)-based smart grid networks by probing the distorted state estimates with the distributed flexible AC transmission system. However, existing studies mainly focus on optimizing the performance of MTD and ignore the safety effect of it on the system’s operation. In this paper, we fill this gap by deeply analyzing the effect of MTD on the small signal stability and aim to alleviate the negative impact and guarantee its defending performance simultaneously. Firstly, the stability is formally described using the eigenvalue sensitivity. The relationship between the MTD-induced perturbation (MTDper) and the stability criteria is derived. Secondly, a new indicator is proposed to measure the effectiveness of MTDper. Thirdly, a constrained optimization problem is formulated to compute the bound of MTDper for guaranteeing the small signal stability. In addition, a surprising finding is that the stability margin can be improved and enhanced by optimizing the value of MTDper without losing the MTD’s effectiveness. Finally, we evaluate the performance of MTDper and its impact on the small signal stability with extensive simulations on the IEEE 30-bus, 39-bus, and 68-bus test power systems. © 2014 IEEE.

Reveal training performance mystery between Tensor Flow and PyTorch in the single GPU environment

Deep learning has gained tremendous success in various fields while training deep neural networks(DNNs) is very compute-intensive, which results in numerous deep learning frameworks that aim to offer better usability and higher performance to deep learning practitioners. Tensor Flow and Py Torch are the two most popular frameworks. Tensor Flow is more promising within the industry context, while Py Torch is more appealing in academia. However, these two frameworks differ much owing to the opposite design philosophy:static vs dynamic computation graph. Tensor Flow is regarded as being more performance-friendly as it has more opportunities to perform optimizations with the full view of the computation graph. However, there are also claims that Py Torch is faster than Tensor Flow sometimes, which confuses the end-users on the choice between them. In this paper, we carry out the analytical and experimental analysis to unravel the mystery of comparison in training speed on single-GPU between Tensor Flow and Py Torch. To ensure that our investigation is as comprehensive as possible, we carefully select seven popular neural networks, which cover computer vision, speech recognition, and natural language processing(NLP). The contributions of this work are two-fold. First, we conduct the detailed benchmarking experiments on Tensor Flow and Py Torch and analyze the reasons for their performance difference. This work provides the guidance for the end-users to choose between these two frameworks. Second, we identify some key factors that affect the performance,which can direct the end-users to write their models more efficiently.

In shared spectrum networks, proper signal type identification is essential for equitable coexistence and effective resource allocation. To increase system throughput and prevent accidents, particularly in situations when the environment is changing quickly, it may be utilised for scheduling gearbox chances. To train deep neural networks, or DNNs, to distinguish coexisting signal kinds without encoding them, researchers use the In-phase/Quadrature (I/Q) sample as input. Two neural networks, one convolutional and one recurrent, are trained using input segments taken from the received signal samples utilising categorical cross-entropy (CE) optimisation. Results for the 5-6 GHz unlicensed band, where LTE LAA, Wi-Fi, and 5G NR-U signals coexist, demonstrate that the suggested architecture is quite accurate. After that, use spectral analysis on the I/Q sequence to boost classification precision even further. More data in the frequency domain may be shown as a spectrogram by using a Short-time Fourier Transform (STFT). Increasing the size of the DNN's input accordingly. Researchers use USRP radios to carry out over-the-air (OTA) tests that validate the efficacy of the suggested detection system. In both software and hardware trials, the suggested method achieves precise categorization.
