Sagittarius A East is a supernova remnant with a unique surrounding environment, as it is located in the immediate vicinity of the supermassive black hole at the Galactic center, Sagittarius A∗. The X-ray emission of the remnant is suspected to show features of overionized plasma, which would require peculiar evolutionary paths. We report on the first observation of Sagittarius A East with X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM). Equipped with a combination of high-resolution microcalorimeter spectrometer and large field-of-view CCD imager, we for the first time resolved the Fe XXV K-shell lines into fine structure lines and measured the forbidden-to-resonance intensity ratio to be 1.39±0.12, which strongly suggests the presence of overionized plasma. We obtained a reliable constraint on the ionization temperature just before the transition into the overionization state, to be > 4 keV. The recombination timescale was constrained to be 11 cm−3 s. The small velocity dispersion of 109 ±6 km s−1 indicates a low Fe ion temperature −1. The high initial ionization temperature and small recombination timescale suggest that either rapid cooling of the plasma via adiabatic expansion from dense circumstellar material or intense photoionization by Sagittarius A∗ in the past may have triggered the overionization. © 2024, CC BY.

For the first time, the non-equilibrium time-relaxation kinetic model (NTRKM) is proposed for compressible turbulence modeling on unresolved grids. Within the nonequilibrium time-relaxation framework, NTRKM is extended in the form of modified Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook model. Based on the first-order Chapman-Enskog expansion, NTRKM connects with the six-variable macroscopic governing equations. The first five governing equations correspond to the conservative laws in mass, momentum and total energy, while the sixth equation governs the evolution of unresolved turbulence kinetic energy Kutke. The unknowns in NTRKM, including turbulent relaxation time and source term, are determined by essential gradient-type assumption and standard dynamic modeling approach. Current generalized kinetic model on unresolved grids consequently offers a profound mesoscopic understanding for one-equation subgrid-scale turbulence kinetic energy Ksgs model in compressible large eddy simulation. To solve NTRKM accurately and robustly, a non-equilibrium gas-kinetic scheme is developed, which succeeds the well-established gas-kinetic scheme for simulating Navier-Stokes equations. Three-dimensional decaying compressible isotropic turbulence and temporal compressible plane mixing layer on unresolved grids are simulated to evaluate the generalized kinetic model and non-equilibrium gas-kinetic scheme. The performance of key turbulent quantities up to second-order statistics confirms that NTRKM is comparable with the widely-used eddy-viscosity Smagorinsky model (SM) and dynamic Smagorinsky model (DSM). Specifically, compared with the DNS solution in temporal compressible plane mixing layer, the performance of NTRKM is much closer with DSM and better than SM. This study provides a workable approach for compressible turbulence modeling on unresolved grids, enriching the understanding of turbulence modeling within the non-equilibrium time-relaxation framework. © 2021, CC BY.

In this paper, we study the influence of ill-conditioned regression matrix on two hyper-parameter estimation methods for the kernel-based regularization method: the empirical Bayes (EB) and the Stein’s unbiased risk estimator (SURE). First, we consider the convergence rate of the cost functions of EB and SURE, and we find that they have the same convergence rate but the influence of the ill-conditioned regression matrix on the scale factor are different: the scale factor for SURE contains one more factor cond(ΦTΦ) than that of EB, where Φ is the regression matrix and cond(·) denotes the condition number of a matrix. This finding indicates that when Φ is ill-conditioned, i.e., cond(ΦTΦ) is large, the cost function of SURE converges slower than that of EB. Then we consider the convergence rate of the optimal hyper-parameters of EB and SURE, and we find that they are both asymptotically normally distributed and have the same convergence rate, but the influence of the ill-conditioned regression matrix on the scale factor are different. In particular, for the ridge regression case, we show that the optimal hyper-parameter of SURE converges slower than that of EB with a factor of 1/n2, as cond(ΦTΦ) goes to ∞, where n is the FIR model order. We introduce DeepABM, a framework for agent-based modeling that leverages geometric message passing of graph neural networks for simulating action and interactions over large agent populations. Using DeepABM allows scaling simulations to large agent populations in real-time and running them efficiently on GPU architectures. To demonstrate the effectiveness of DeepABM, we build DeepABM-COVID simulator to provide support for various non-pharmaceutical interventions (quarantine, exposure notification, vaccination, testing) for the COVID-19 pandemic, and can scale to populations of representative size in real-time on a GPU. Specifically, DeepABM-COVID can model 200 million interactions (over 100,000 agents across 180 time-steps) in 90 seconds, and is made available online to help researchers with modeling and analysis of various interventions. We explain various components of the framework and discuss results from one research study to evaluate the impact of delaying the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in collaboration with clinical and public health experts. While we simulate COVID-19 spread, the ideas introduced in the paper are generic and can be easily extend to other forms of agent-based simulations. Furthermore, while beyond scope of this document, DeepABM enables inverse agent-based simulations which can be used to learn physical parameters in the (micro) simulations using gradient-based optimization with large-scale real-world (macro) data. The COVID-19 pandemic has presented many challenges that have spurred biotechnological research to address specific problems. Diagnostics is one area where biotechnology has been critical. Diagnostic tests play a vital role in managing a viral threat by facilitating the detection of infected and/or recovered individuals. From the perspective of what information is provided, these tests fall into two major categories, molecular and serological. Molecular diagnostic techniques assay whether a virus is present in a biological sample, thus making it possible to identify individuals who are currently infected. Additionally, when the immune system is exposed to a virus, it responds by producing antibodies specific to the virus. Serological tests make it possible to identify individuals who have mounted an immune response to a virus of interest and therefore facilitate the identification of individuals who have previously encountered the virus. These two categories of tests provide different perspectives valuable to understanding the spread of SARS-CoV-2. Within these categories, different biotechnological approaches offer specific advantages and disadvantages. Here we review the categories of tests developed for the detection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus or antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 and discuss the role of diagnostics in the COVID-19 pandemic. © 2022, CC BY.

We present an initial analysis of the X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) first-light observation of the supernova remnant (SNR) N132D in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The Resolve microcalorimeter has obtained the first high-resolution spectrum in the 1.6–10 keV band, which contains K-shell emission lines of Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe. We find that the Si and S lines are relatively narrow, with a broadening represented by a Gaussian-like velocity dispersion of σv ∼ 450 km s−1. The Fe Heα lines are, on the other hand, substantially broadened with σv ∼ 1670 km s−1. This broadening can be explained by a combination of the thermal Doppler effect due to the high ion temperature and the kinematic Doppler effect due to the SNR expansion. Assuming that the Fe Heα emission originates predominantly from the supernova ejecta, we estimate the reverse shock velocity at the time when the bulk of the Fe ejecta were shock heated to be −1000 ∼ Vrs [km s−1] ∼ 3300 (in the observer frame). We also find that Fe Lyα emission is redshifted with a bulk velocity of ∼ 890 km s−1, substantially larger than the radial velocity of the local interstellar medium surrounding N132D. These results demonstrate that high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy is capable of providing constraints on the evolutionary stage, geometry, and velocity distribution of SNRs. We present an analysis of the first two XRISM/Resolve spectra of the well-known Seyfert-1.5 active galactic nucleus in NGC 4151, obtained in December 2023. Our work focuses on the nature of the narrow Fe Kα emission line at 6.4 keV, the strongest and most common X-ray line observed in AGN. The total line is found to consist of three components. Even the narrowest component of the line is resolved with evident Fe Kα,1 (6.404 keV) and Kα,2 (6.391 keV) contributions in a 2:1 flux ratio, fully consistent with neutral gas with negligible bulk velocity. Subject to the limitations of our models, the narrowest and intermediate-width components are consistent with emission from optically thin gas, suggesting that they arise in a disk atmosphere and/or wind. Modeling the three line components in terms of Keplerian broadening, they are readily associated with (1) the inner wall of the "torus," (2) the innermost optical "broad line region" (or, "X-ray BLR"), and (3) a region with a radius of r 100 GM/c2 that may signal a warp in the accretion disk. Viable alternative explanations of the broadest component include a fast wind component and/or scattering;however, we find evidence of variability in the narrow Fe Kα line complex on time scales consistent with small radii. The best-fit models are statistically superior to simple Voigt functions, but when fit with Voigt profiles the time-averaged lines are consistent with a projected velocity broadening of (formula presented). Overall, the resolution and sensitivity of XRISM show that the narrow Fe K line in AGN is an effective probe of all key parts of the accretion flow, as it is currently understood. We discuss the implications of these findings for our understanding of AGN accretion, future studies with XRISM, and X-ray-based black hole mass measurements. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. With the rapid development of Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) technology, many medical imaging equipments are connected to the medical information network to facilitate the process of diagnosing and treating for doctors. As medical image contains sensitive information, it is of importance yet very challenging to encrypt the medical image to safeguard the privacy or security of the patient. In this work, a deep learning based encryption and decryption network (DLEDNet) is proposed to fulfill the process of encrypting and decrypting the medical image. Specifically, in DLEDNet, the Cycle-GAN network is employed as the main learning network to transfer the medical image from its original domain to the target domain. Target domain is regarded as a "Hidden Factors" to guide the learning model to realize the encryption process. The encrypted image is restored to the original (plaintext) image through a reconstruction network to achieve an image decryption process. In order to realize the data mining process direct from the privacy-protected environment, a ROI (Region of interest)-mining-network is proposed to extract the interested object directly from the encrypted image. The proposed DLEDNet is evaluated on the chest X-ray dataset. Extensive experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve a high level of security with a good performance in efficiency.
